Chapter 40
Come to Think of It,
That Might Make Sense
After exchanging the magic stones for cash, I complained at length to Onee-san,
and then moved to my usual simple lodging. After taking a shower and freshening
up, I collapsed onto the usual bed again.
The room, illuminated by a small light, is very quiet. Even though I try
to sleep, my eyes are wide awake and I can't fall asleep. Even though I
intended to come to terms with it in my heart, it's still a shock that the Class
I worked so hard for was a bandit. Besides, if I make the same kind of mistake
with my Sub-class next time, it'll be too terrible to look at. I really have to
think about the reason why I became a bandit this time.
That's right, this is no time to be depressed.
「I wonder
why.」
It seems there's a strong pattern of the acquired Class being
decided by one's actions. I hear there's a common pattern where a person who
has been fighting with a sword the whole time gets Swordsman or Gladiator, or
Spearman if it's a spear, gaining Classes associated with their weapons.
A person who used magic through skills would mainly become a magician type
corresponding to the attribute of that magic, and a person who often acts like
a scout rather than focusing on attacking methods might become a spy or a
ninja.
It seems there are a lot of Classes, and apparently there are
cases where it's decided for completely incomprehensible reasons like mine. Did
I become a bandit for no particular reason? I wonder.
In my case, I think I was doing nothing but super close-quarters combat
using a hammer and boots. So it should be natural for me to become a
warrior-type Class, like a Fighter at the very least. Or even a Hero.
Moreover, I had arbitrarily convinced myself that I, who have been
fighting solo the whole time in an 『Ultra Hard Mode』 Dungeon, wouldn't
get an ordinary Class. Even now, I can't help but feel that I had enough
qualifications to justify that belief.
Or was there some element in my actions that was judged as, "Bandit
is appropriate, isn't it"? I don't think there is. There isn't, right,
because it's a bandit. What even are bandit-like actions, seriously.
「Huh? Eh,
wait a second.」
Suddenly, memories of everything up until now crossed my mind like a
surging wave.
If I think about it calmly, you know? In my still-short Dungeon
Hunter life, the place where I spent an overwhelmingly large amount of time
and continued to defeat monsters was the mountain stage of the Tenth Floor.
There is no room for misunderstanding that; it's absolutely certain.
I swung my hammer around in that familiar mountain stage Dungeon,
defeating monsters and collecting treasure magic stones like crazy. Raking them
in. On top of that, I unintentionally delivered the finishing blow to the final
boss-like giant Golem-kun while it was stuck in a hole. It might not be
an exaggeration to say I killed it by trapping it.
Does that mean, by any chance? Taking everything into consideration,
doesn't it seem bandit-like?
I attacked monsters like crazy in the mountains and earned a lot of
money. Even though I didn't attack people, I can't help but wonder why I'm a
bandit, and I think it's a sick joke, but. But my actions... might actually be
bandit-like, in a way.
And since I operate solo, I'm worthy of acquiring the title
"Stray". I'll admit that part. Therefore, my Class is Stray
Bandit.
「Are you
kidding me.」
I have complaints, but there might have been elements I can accept. No,
no, as if I could accept this! Dammit, as I thought, it's frustrating.
I closed my eyes, my vision blurring as if smudged, and decided to stop
thinking about it. Let's just go to sleep. When I wake up, I'll do my best
again as the usual me. I'll change my mindset, earn money, and get that tower
mansion.
And then, though it'll be a long way off, I'll absolutely get a super
amazing Class when I reach Level 20 next. Even if it's a Sub-class, it
should help distract me from this emptiness at least a little.
Or rather. It's fine if I just play a huge active role and make people
think, "Bandits are amazing," or "I admire bandits." I just
have to become so amazing that I change the values people hold toward bandits!
The Hunter Rankings, was it? I can't see them because I don't
have a smartphone, but why don't I leap to the top of them. The up-and-coming Dungeon
Hunter, Nagakura Aoi Scarlet, is a bandit! And that bandit is taking
the world by storm! Everyone's idol, the Bandit Hunter!
Oh yeah, I'm gonna do it. That's the spirit. I just have to do my best!
Author’s note:
If I were to divide this into volumes, I think up to here would be Volume
One. Although Aoi acquired a disappointing Class, from here it
begins anew with acquiring her next Class, escaping homelessness, and
finding new goals and encounters.
If you'd like, giving your thoughts or ratings would be encouraging. I'd
be happy if you supported me! I'd be super grateful! Comments make me happy, so
please don't hesitate to write a little thought or something if you have any.
The story has only just begun. Please continue to look forward to the next
chapter!
Also, I wrote about the future update schedule and such in the Activity Report. If you are interested, please check it out. It's a bit long.
