[WN] Three Skills : Volume 1 Chapter 18

Volume 1

Chapter 18

I L earned About "Boring"

Translator : PolterGlast

For this request, Kushina received a reward of about 30,000 gold. The breakdown is as follows: the original reward for defeating the Poilsneg was about 16,000 gold for 62 of them, and the purchase of other magical beasts was about 15,000 gold.

Apparently, the meat and scales of the Poilsneg don't sell for much. The meat is poisonous, and the scales are too soft and also slightly poisonous.

The materials from other magical beasts were only worth about 15,000 here in the village, but they would normally be worth at least 40,000 gold.

Below is a brief description of the other magical beasts:

Red Reeve

A giant boar-like magical beast with red skin and a height up to the chest of an adult male. A highly dangerous monster with a danger level of B. Its body temperature reaches 80 degrees Celsius, and its skin is so hard that most weapons cannot cut through it. Its fur has the effect of decomposing magical power, making it difficult for magic to work. Its main attack method is a collision after wrapping itself in intense heat, likely due to magic or a "skill" it possesses.

Thief Dilia

A deer-like magical beast with green skin all over its body. A dangerous monster with a danger level of C, said to manipulate sound and wind with the large horns on both ends of its head. Its main attacks are ultrasonic attacks with its horns and being blown away by the wind. It's a magical beast that is difficult to bring into close combat without receiving long-range attacks.

Kyrill Monchi

A monkey-like magical beast covered in black fur. It stands about 150 centimeters tall. Its speed and sharp claws are its weapons. It moves from tree to tree and attacks from its opponent's blind spot. However, it is inferior to the Enthal Monchi, which appears in the [Forest of Calamity], in terms of speed and attack power, making it a completely inferior version. Danger level C.

Flame Lizard

A lizard-like magical beast covered in red scales. A highly dangerous monster with a danger level of B. Its scales are impervious even to iron weapons, and it can sweep away its surroundings with a fiery roar from its mouth. Due to its appearance, it is also called a dragonkin.

Danger Level

Each magical beast is classified with a danger level, as the name implies. The general standards are: D is a level that can be hunted by a party of novice adventurers, C is a level that can be hunted by veteran adventurers, B is a level that veteran adventurers might be able to hunt in a group, A is a level that even town people or, in the worst case, the entire country would have to cooperate to fight against, and S is beyond common sense. It is said that even a hero or a great hero cannot hunt it alone.

After receiving his reward, Kushina quickly left the village. There was no reason for him to stay any longer.

The villagers watched his departing back until he was out of sight.

Village Chief's POV

"Are you sure about this, Village Chief? Why didn't you try to keep him?"

Nobu, the young man who was by my side as my bodyguard today, asks.

"You're asking the same question again, Nobu. Besides, there's no way we could have stopped him."

Mofu replies before I can say anything.

"Even so, there was still a possibility that..."

"No way. If we irritated him and he went on a rampage, this village would be finished."

"Rampage... is he that kind of person?"

"I'm talking about 'possibilities'. I'm just saying that there's a possibility that the opposite of what you said could happen."

"Ugh..."

The two young men are discussing why I didn't stop the adventurer.

It's true, as Nobu said, it might have been worth it to try to stop him. He would probably have refused, but there was a 'possibility'.

But that also implied the possibility that we might offend him by inviting him. We had just seen a legendary title like White Rank. There was no way we could beat that adventurer. The priority was not to anger him.

However, there's another reason why I didn't stop him.

When he came to take the request, his smile, and the smile he had when he came back from the forest, I felt a strange difference.

───Was that man's smile ever so bored?

□□□

After receiving my reward, I informed the receptionist of the successful completion of the quest and was guided to the reference room where Kakyouin-san was.

The reference room apparently had shelves lining the walls, filled with books and documents───or rather, there were so many that the shelves were not enough, and books and documents that couldn't be put away were piled on the floor.

I opened the door to the reference room.

"Kakyouin-san, I'm back."

"………Oh, are you done already?"

Kakyouin-san took off her glasses and turned her gaze from the book she was reading. Kakyouin-san wears glasses, I see.

"Thank you for your hard work, Kushina."

A smile formed on Kakyouin-san's face.

"Thank you."

"Well then, I'll take my leave for today and stay at the... inn..."

Kakyouin-san got up from her chair and returned the book to its original place, then turned to me───and looked at me with a puzzled expression.

"......"

"......?"

"......Tch......so that's what happened"

Kakyouin-san showed an expression of anger so intense that it seemed insufficient to call it anger, and then clicked her tongue───or so I thought, but she immediately returned to a blank expression and walked out into the corridor, passing me.

"......?"

I followed Kakyouin-san as she walked away.

We left the guild.

I followed her along the stone-paved path that ran through the town.

"......Hey."

Kakyouin-san suddenly stopped.

"Could you stop that face?"

She turned to me and said that with an arrogant attitude.

"......What are you talking about?"

"I'm telling you to stop that creepy smile. It irritates me."

"......"

I mean... I've always been like this, so it's not easy to just stop when you're told to.

"......Tch, if you're bored, then be bored, but at least show an expression that matches it. Why are you trying to hide it?"

Kakyouin-san spoke irritably, her voice lowered slightly as she looked down.

"…………"

B-o-r-e-d?

No. I don't feel anything. I'm just spending my time idly as usual. I know that this is the right way to live life. This smile is just something I put on because it's convenient for that───

"───!"

Kakyouin-san pressed closer to me, her eyebrows furrowed in further irritation at my lack of reaction.

"Don't show me such a tasteless expression in front of me!!"

"───!"

"Nothing in life is wasted! Every minute and second is precious, and they all have meaning!! Expressing your emotions with your face───that has a great meaning too!! But you... You're supposed to be my attendant, aren't you!? Then! Be more noble, like my attendant! Don't embarrass me! Stop that smile right now!!"

Kakyouin-san continued to rant without caring about the eyes of those around her. And then───

"Don't hide your emotions from me... Even if you're an attendant, I won't allow you to hide your emotions."

Kakyouin-san's mouth closed. Her body was shaking for some reason───but her lips were being bitten so hard.

At first, I didn't understand why Kakyouin-san was so angry. Nothing is wasted? Hide your emotions? I didn't understand any of those words.

But then, I remembered what Kakyoin-san had said earlier:

"If you're bored, then be bored, and just say so."

It wasn't that I hid the fact that I was bored.

Without realizing it, I had been feeling bored.

I hadn't noticed it myself. Only when Kakyouin-san told me did I realize───so this is what the feeling of 'boredom' is, huh?

Kakyouin-san started speaking again.

"You've been living like this for a long time, haven't you? To avoid being interfered with, to avoid getting involved in anything, you've been unconsciously killing yourself like that.

But now you know───the 'pleasure' of 'living'. When you were in the forest, you looked so happy. That's when you first learned, isn't it? ───The 'emotion' of 'fun'.

If you hadn't known that, I wouldn't have been able to see through your iron mask either. If it had been hardened over many years, even I wouldn't be able to see through it.

But you can't hide it anymore. Because you've learned───'emotions', 'pleasure'. So, from now on───since you've figured it out, absolutely don't show me that smile. It makes me want to vomit. Okay? It's an order."

Having said that, Kakyouin-san brushed her hair aside and turned to walk forward again.

The people around us were looking at us with curious eyes, wondering what was going on.

Bored... bored. I see, so this is the emotion of 'boredom'.

I think───I'm so glad I came to this world.

'Fun'───not just positive emotions. 'Bored'───it even teaches me negative emotions.

If I stay in this world, I'm sure I'll learn many more emotions. I'm sure I'll be able to live like a human being, something I couldn't do before.

I pressed my trembling left hand against my right hand, bringing my hands and head close together───

"───"

I couldn't bring the constantly upturned corners of my mouth back down for a while.

Kakyouin-san, who had turned around again without me noticing, saw my expression.

"Yes, that's better."

Her face, in contrast to her dissatisfied expression just a moment ago, was filled with a bright smile.
