Volume 1

Chapter 42

I Reunited with Kakyoin-san

Translator : PolterGlast

Runa's POV

"And so, my daughter told me..."

I still couldn't go to the ruins to look for Kushina.

And it was all thanks to this white-haired old man (damn old geezer)! He's been rambling on and on about pointless things... And to make matters worse, he's incredibly strong!

I've tried to escape this place, even if it means using force. But every time, my body, my mind, and my instincts would scream "Stop!"

It was an intuition I had to follow. If I didn't, it would lead to 'death'—that kind of warning.

But every time I did, time seemed to pass, and the probability of Kushina being safe decreased.

It's not that I was worried about Kushina's life—because of his ability. If there was a limit to the number of times he could use that power, he would be dead by now. That's how desperate I am. Of course, that doesn't guarantee that there's no limit. But it's easier to believe that there is no limit. So, I'm not worried about his life.

The problem is his personality. It's what made me decide to take him with me, and while it's an advantage, it's also a weakness. If he were to fall into a trap that he couldn't escape from on his own, he might just accept it instead of trying to escape. He is too honest. I know he's always thinking, but he's too accepting.

Even if he's not caught in a trap, if someone else were to give Kushina an order, he would probably obey.

That's what I'm afraid of.

If this continues, Kushina might leave me. The golden egg I finally found might slip through my fingers. ───I can't bear that.

So I want to go and check on Kushina's situation.

I want to be sure that he hasn't left me.

But...

How much time has passed since this old man started holding me up? It feels like I've been held up for a long time.

In this world where the sun is always shining, I can't measure time by its position. Not knowing the time is making my anxiety worse.

And to make matters worse, this old geezer is constantly emitting a fighting spirit to prevent me from escaping. Because of that, I can't stop shaking. My clothes are all wet from sweat.

"Hey, are you listening?"

"What about you? Were you even listening to what I was saying? I've told you many times that I'm in a hurry, haven't I???"

"Young people nowadays... being impatient is no good."

"───!!!"

This old man.

Normally, my emotions would be transmitted to Kushina, and he would come to me!

But that's not happening... The time when that wasn't happening is increasing. And that means...

"...."

Kushina...

───Then, it happened suddenly.

A loud cracking sound echoed, and the transparent something that had been covering the entire area around us, which I hadn't noticed, shattered into pieces... and then───.

□□□

Hm? What's this?

I came to where Kakyoin-san should be, but for some reason, I can't go any further. There seems to be a transparent wall.

…………

This is the first time I've received such a strong signal.

Kakyoin-san seems to be in a panic, which is unusual for her.

Anyway, I have to get to the other side.

I don't want to break it... but it would be bad to make Kakyoin-san angry.

It can't be helped.

I shifted my weight slightly backward, pulled my fist back to my side, and thrust it forward with considerable force.

My fist hit something, and there was a dull thud.

The wind howled, and the momentum that was supposed to carry me forward was redirected, scattering the impact in all directions───and I heard a cracking sound.

As soon as I heard it, more and more cracking sounds followed, and finally───

With a loud CRASH, the transparent something shattered into pieces and fell.

And then, I realized that the transparent something wasn't transparent at all.

It only appeared transparent because it was connected to the scenery to hide what was inside, and the actual landscape that continued behind it was completely different.

I thought I was in a forest, but it turned out to be an unnatural open space, with only knee-high weeds growing.

There was a wooden house and a chair, a round table, and other things placed on it.

One of the people sitting in the chair was───Kakyoin-san.

"───"

"Ah, there you are."

Kakyoin-san looked at me with wide eyes───and then suddenly burst into tears and glared at me sharply.

She got up and approached me quickly.

"You're late!!"

She shouted.

"Late, late, late! You're late, late... late..."

But her voice soon grew smaller.

Her shoulders were shaking, and she lowered her head.

Then, she suddenly raised her face and glared at me.

"You should have come sooner!! I sent you a signal!! Why didn't you come!! Do you know what I have been through...!!??"

"Calm down,"

"How dare you make me worry!! You're just Kushina! It's all your fault!! That's why I'm going through this mess!! I wish you were more... more..."

I grabbed Kakyoin-san's shoulders with both hands.

"Calm down, Kakyoin-san. Isn't getting angry like this something you hate?"

"───!"

Upon hearing this, Kakyoin-san's eyes widened in surprise, and she closed her mouth.

But in reality, because she doesn't like interacting with people, the parts of her that should have developed haven't, and the parts that have been exaggerated have grown instead, making her an immature girl.

Unlike others, she has never known a setback because of her character which does not tolerate failure. Therefore, her mentality is fragile. She is a dangerous and fragile woman who is both solitary and dangerous.
