Volume 1
Chapter 46
A Zombie Outbreak
Translator : PolterGlast
"Kushina, you can
go and take a request. I'll be finalizing the details of the deal with
Akana-san here for a while," Kakyoin-san said.
So I went to the
reception desk of the Adventurer's Guild.
At the reception, I
asked Grammy, the receptionist with glasses who I've become quite familiar
with, to find me a job.
"Here you go,
Kushina-san. I'm so sorry for always giving you such troublesome jobs."
"It's totally
fine. By the way, is today's request about exterminating Robs again?"
I asked Grammy.
Recently, the jobs
I've been getting are requests to exterminate Robs—zombies, as we would call
them on Earth.
These Robs are quite
dangerous monsters, rated B-rank for danger.
Apparently, no matter
how much you attack them, they won't stop moving unless you use fire or
purification magic. And because their flesh is rotting, they're full of germs,
so if you get bitten, you'll get a dangerous disease right away. They move
slowly and don't have much attack power, but they're classified as B-rank
because they're so troublesome.
Furthermore, these
Robs rarely move alone. They usually move in groups. When facing a group, the
danger level jumps all the way up to A-rank.
They're like the
embodiment of trouble.
"Yes, that's
right. There's an abandoned village southeast of here, and apparently, a large
number of Robs have appeared there, so the request is to defeat them before
they reach this town."
"I see... There
have been a lot of outbreaks lately."
By the way, Grammy
asked me to speak to her in a casual way, saying, "It makes me uneasy to
be spoken to formally by a white-ranked adventurer. Please, use a casual
tone." That's why I'm speaking to her in such a casual way.
"That's right,
these outbreaks are honestly abnormal. I think we need to find the cause as
soon as possible..."
"Cause, huh? Do
you have any idea?"
"Well, I have a
hunch, or should I say a few theories. But I haven't been able to confirm any
of them."
"I see, that's
tough."
While saying that, I
signed the request acceptance for Grammy.
"Well, if you
find out anything, let me know. Then I'll go crush them."
"Ahahaha, that's
reassuring. You're as reliable as ever, Kushina-san."
"Thanks, well
then, I'm off."
I said that and left
the reception desk.

Cause, huh? I hope I
can figure it out soon.
I was thinking like
that as I ran towards my destination.
I've been dealing with
Robs for a while now, and I find it extremely boring.
Originally, Robs were
invincible unless you used purification magic, but I have the ring that
Chrisya-san gave me.
When I visited
Chrisya-san regularly, she told me that the ring had some kind of interference
effect on existence.
What it means is that
the ring has the ability to directly harm existence—souls, so even if I'm facing
a spirit or something, I can damage it with this ring equipped.
Because of this power,
the Robs' immortality means nothing to me. Even their biting attacks don't pose
much of a threat, as they don't have the power to pierce my body. Even if germs
get into my body, it will be solved once I die.
This is why dealing
with Robs is so boring. I hope they figure out the cause soon so I can get
assigned to other jobs.
While I was thinking
this, I finally arrived at my destination.
There were quite a few
houses standing, but they were all covered in ferns and vines. The wooden
structures were rotting and had holes. The roads, which must have been
well-maintained at one time, were overgrown with weeds, and there was no sign
of life. It was truly an abandoned village.
However, in such an
abandoned village, I could see several figures—or rather, what used to be
people. Numerous Robs were wandering around.
Some wore tattered
clothes, some wore nothing at all, some had their heads completely rotted away
revealing their skulls, and some had one arm missing—there were all sorts of
Robs. I'd say there were about fifty of them.
Even though I was
still a distance away from them, I drew my right elbow back.
This was already an
abandoned village. Grammy had told me before that it was okay to destroy
abandoned places.
So, as usual, I
decided to slaughter all the Robs in the village at once.
I thrust my drawn fist
forward. With my current strength, the air around me was agitated, and the wind
headed straight forward. The moving wind gradually accelerated and turned into
a shock wave, approaching the village, and then...
Boom!
With a deafening roar,
the destructive storm engulfed the village and the Robs, crushing them.
Well, I guess I just
have to go around and finish off the few Robs that survived.
I began to walk
towards what used to be the village.
...As I thought, it's
so boring.

One night.
In an underground
tavern with an entrance hidden in a back alley, many of the town's adventurers
had gathered.
"Hey! Is it true
that the equipment you were talking about has arrived!?"
A burly man with
well-developed muscles entered the room with great energy.
"Don't be so
hasty. There it is."
One of the gathered
adventurers pointed to the far left of the room. There, a large amount of
pitch-black equipment was placed.
"Hoo-hoo! So this
is the black armor!! It's completely black everywhere I see it!"
"What do you mean
'completely black'?"
"I mean it's
pitch black!"
The adventurer who had
interjected looked beyond exasperated, almost pitying. He put his right hand to
his forehead and sighed, lowering his head.
But the muscular man
didn't care about that at all, and was captivated by the equipment that had
arrived.
"So this is the
armor said to be the best in this world...! You've really managed to collect
them all!"
"Just by wearing
this, your magic resistance and physical abilities will increase drastically.
No, calling it an increase is an understatement. Such equipment that everyone
wants is right in front of us... It's crazy!"
"With this, those
Robs that have been swarming recently aren't so scary anymore!!"
Inspired by the
muscular man, the other adventurers also looked at the equipment and got
excited.
Before them lies the
ultimate armor, the Black Gear. No one had ever heard of this equipment until a
certain man approached them with a deal, saying, "I have the ultimate
equipment that everyone would envy." Before that, no one knew about such
equipment. Of course, at first, the adventurers were suspicious – there was no
way such equipment could exist, and even if it did, there was no way it could
be gathered in large quantities. But when they actually saw the real thing and
were offered such sweet words like "I'll provide them for free if you help
me get back at the Gilmberg family," no one could refuse the offer. The
adventurers took the deal.
─── Without even knowing
who that man really was.
In the far corner of
the room, an adventurer who had been standing quietly, unlike the others who
were elated by the equipment, stood up.
"All right, we're
all set."
At his words, the
other adventurers fell silent.
"With this, our
revolution will finally begin."
At those words,
someone gulped.
"Even if this
revolution is successful, we will lose our lives. Our ultimate goal is the
peace of this town and the downfall of a single noble. We're not against the
country, so we'll be killed by the country in the end.
But you here agree
with me nonetheless! You've risked your lives to stand up and say that we can't
let the person who caused that tragedy ten years ago remain seated in the
lord's chair, and that we must bring down those heartless people! I am grateful
to all of you brave and just warriors!"
Even hearing the words
about being killed by the country, no one wavered. Everyone listened with
determination in their eyes.
"Ten years... Ten
years. We've lost loved ones, we've lost hope for life... But we couldn't die
until we saw that foolish noble receive divine punishment. We've been gritting
our teeth and living for ten years! But divine punishment never came. That's
right! We won't wait for divine punishment! We will bring down divine
punishment ourselves! If no one takes action, nothing will change! Warriors who
understand this and have stood up! Now is the time for change!"
The man swung his
right arm.
"Tomorrow at
four, we will execute our plan! Warriors! Our revolution will save this city
tomorrow!"
"""OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"""
With the man raising
his right hand, the other adventurers also raised their fists and roared.

As a side note, in the
world where Kushina lives, there's no concept of day and night. Although it's a
spherical planet like Earth, both the northern and southern hemispheres are
illuminated by separate light sources throughout the day. To put it in Earth
terms, you could say that the sun shines on the northern hemisphere where
Kushina currently resides, while the moon shines on the southern hemisphere
where deserts are prevalent.
Therefore, the way
they count time is also unique, with the number of hours ticking off every
three hours: noon is the first hour, then three o'clock in the afternoon the
second, and so on. The count is reset at the end of the eighth hour at 9:00
a.m. on Earth.
It is customary to
sleep between the fourth (9:00 p.m.) and fifth (midnight) hours, with the
windows darkened by blackout curtains to prevent light from entering the room.
This is just a little
extra information.
