Chapter 13
They Attacked Each
Other

"The
Underworld...?"
The Underworld...
isn't that where dead souls go?
"That's right.
I'm there now. So, Kushina, I want you to come with me."
Kakyouin-san said with
a smile.
"Don't be
ridiculous."
However, Chrisya-san
objected.
"What's wrong,
Chrisya?"
"What do you
think you're doing? Do you think I'd allow you to take my kin with you?"
Chrisya-san's sharp
gaze pierced Kakyouin-san.
In response,
Kakyouin-san snorted.
"Hmph... that's
unusual for someone as fastidious as you. Have you grown so fond of
Kushina?"
"Don't talk
nonsense. I simply cannot tolerate my possessions being defiled."
"Fufu, is that
so. Well, let's just leave it at that for now."
Kakyouin-san teased
Chrisya-san again.
"But,
unfortunately, Kushina is neither an object nor a machine. He has his own will
and judgment. There's no reason why he has to do as you say."
"Reason or not,
once he becomes my kin, he is mine. Since you call yourself a God, shouldn't
you understand that?"
"………"
Silence fell between
the two.
Chrisya-san was still
in a bad mood, and Kakyouin-san, though smiling, had a cold look in her eyes.
"Don't go,
Kushina. There's no reason for you to go to such a frivolous place."
"Fufu... so you
say that? Are you perhaps provoking me?"
"You started
it."
Chrisya-san and
Kakyouin-san started arguing again.
Ugh... which one of
them should I listen to? It seems like no matter what I do, I'll be in trouble.
The two faced each
other.
Wait, this feels
dangerous───
Both of them thrust
out their palms almost simultaneously.
Instantly, a golden
magic circle appeared in front of Chrisya-san's palm───and a large number of
arrows of light were fired toward Kakyouin-san.
And at almost the same
time, a familiar black mud appeared at Kakyouin-san's feet. Several
tentacle-shaped muds floated up from it and headed towards Chrisya-san.
I've seen the mud that
Kakyouin-san created before, but I don't know what its effects are.
However, the arrows of
light that Chrisya-san fired have a disintegration effect. They will erase
anything they touch, no matter what effect it has.
The two opposing
forces clashed. The arrows of light and the black mud collided, and
Chrisya-san's arrow obliterated the───
"───!"
"Wha!"
───Instead of being
erased, the two forces collided, and the mud spread vertically against the
arrows, absorbing all the light arrows.
Kakyouin-san raised
the corners of her mouth.
Pulling her right
elbow back once, Kakyouin-san pointed her right index finger upwards and curved
it towards herself.
Then, new mud
tentacles emerged from the mud pool below and approached me.
"───!! Dodge it!"
Perhaps she had seen
through my thoughts of trying to take it head-on, Chrisya-san told me to dodge
the attack.
I jumped diagonally
backward. Chrisya-san also jumped in the same direction to avoid the mud.
When the approaching
mud hit the ground, the tip of its shape collapsed, and the black mud splashed
like a fountain, covering the surrounding area.
Chrisya-san and I were
now in the air. Moreover, we were near the wall of the room.
Kakyouin-san didn't
miss that. She twisted her outstretched right hand, pointed her index finger
upwards, and curved it towards herself.
───Instantly, a black
stain appeared on the wall behind me and Chrisya-san, spreading and flashing
with red light several times in an instant.
With a dull sound as
if something large were emerging from underwater, two huge black hands
appeared, splashing mud as if a mud pool had spread in the stain on the wall.
They were large enough to easily grab a person───and they were deployed
on either side of Chrisya-san and me, ready to grab us both. If we stayed like
this, we would both be caught.
Judging from her earlier
call, Chrisya-san seemed to want to avoid touching this mud.
And I could avoid
being grabbed by this mud.
If I were to be caught
by the mud here and later found out that there was a way for me to do something
about it───Chrisya-san would
definitely be furious.
I bent my knees even
though I had no footing.
I instantly kicked my
feet in the air, creating an impact, and moved in the direction I wanted to go───and I escaped from the
black hands, carrying Chrisya-san. I thrust my arm out with all my might,
creating a shockwave, and used a wide-range attack that would cause deep
damage.
The black hands,
unable to grab anything, collided and collapsed as if a water balloon had
burst. A large mass of mud fell to the floor.
I landed on the ground
where the mud hadn't spread and put Chrisya-san down.
"………What are you
trying to do, Kushina?"
Kakyouin-san asked me
the reason for my actions. A smile was on her face, but her eyes were still not
smiling.
"What do you
mean? It was Kakyouin-san who attacked. I just avoided it."
"I'm not asking
for such sophistry. You've been so honest in accepting your enemies' attacks,
so why are you avoiding mine? Especially to protect Chrisya?"
I scratched my head.
"Well, you see...
I'm Chrisya-san's kin after all."
"………"
The smile disappeared
from Kakyouin-san's face.
"Listen,
Kakyouin-san. There's something I want to ask you... or rather, something I
want you to stop doing..."
"What?"
"Well, you see,
that mud... could you please stop aiming it at Chrisya-san?"
"Huh?"
"Well,
Chrisya-san seems to hate touching this mud. So please don't aim it at
her."
"………Kushina, do
you understand what you're saying?"
"Huh?"
"You saw the
exchange between me and Chrisya-san just now. It was pretty tense, wasn't it?
And then, Chrisya-san fired an arrow intending to erase me. In other words,
Chrisya-san and I have become enemies. Well... I don't think of it that way,
though."
"Yeah, well... I
guess so."
"If you
understand, then don't interfere. And rest assured. Mine is not really an attack."
"Huh?
Really?"
"Yes. It's just
to be swallowed up. It's just to drop you into the [Underworld] where I am. In
other words, it's just moving you from where you are now. I won't harm you or
cause you any pain."
Kakyouin-san scooped
up some mud herself and explained about the mud.
"………"
I couldn't help but
fall silent at that.
No... it's not like
that, Kakyouin-san. It doesn't matter if the mud is harmless... I think
Chrisya-san noticed the nature of that mud. And even though she noticed, she instinctively
disliked it. So... that's not good.
And besides───
"Hey."
"What is it,
Kushina?"
"Who are
you?"
I couldn't help but
ask.
