Chapter 72
Saint’s Visit
Translator : PolterGlast
"So! Who is going
to come and greet me!?"
Yuko looked around at
the gathered citizens with a smug expression. Everyone was exchanging
bewildered glances, and from behind, a voice shouted, "H-hey, you
there!!" The gatekeeper we had met on the first day at the entrance had
his cheerful face contorted as he swung his arms in circles.
"That's obviously
not okay, that's way too much of a forced entry, get out—or rather, the
carpet—!?"
And he looked utterly
perplexed.
Well, even Veda
probably wasn't aware of such a large group. They must have forced their way
through the entrance with sheer numbers. The water sphere membrane wouldn't
allow criminals through. That's probably why the entrance had minimal
personnel. The gatekeeper was being blocked by many servants and couldn't get
close, and in his anger, he let out a scream of "nnnngiiiieee!!!" Was
he alright?
"W-what are you
groaning about! That's why I'm telling you, I'm the Saint!"
"If you're the
Saint, would you come through an entrance like this!? You'd come through the
Head Tower or the Vice-Tower Master, right!?"
"The branch! I
don't have permission to use it, so I came by boat!!"
However, Yuko seemed
to have heard him clearly, and they were arguing back and forth. The shortcut
system wasn't generally known, so the gatekeeper was shouting, "What's a
branch!?" But if she couldn't use the World Tree branch, had she come
manually? Priest Nabari, who seemed to be Yuko's attendant standing behind her,
was biting his lip with a pained expression. He looked like he had been through
a lot.
"The Head Tower
will pick us up... but anyone is fine. I've made such a big deal out of this,
so they should be coming soon... look, over there!"
Yuko, who had been
making a visor with her hand and looking around, suddenly brightened. She
walked straight towards me. The carpet was, of course, left behind. "It's
okay," I thought in the back of my mind, but I panicked, wondering what to
do. Yuko was right in front of me.
"Uh, ah."
"Hey handsome,
move it!"
I jumped with a
"hieh!", so it wasn't me.
"...Huh? Oh,
okay."
After a few seconds,
Lotus blinked and casually stepped aside with his arms crossed. "You're my
type, but come back after it gets darker," she said quickly, dismissing
him. "Okay," Lotus replied, not really understanding. He was plenty
handsome even now, or rather, the current Lotus was so different from the game
that Yuko didn't recognize him at all. I wondered if that was a good thing or
not.
"Veda! So, you
did come after all?"
"May I ask who
you are?"
"I'm Yuko. The
Saint!"
"May I ask who
you are?"
Veda's emotional
distance was too far removed, which reminded me of the "Mary-san"
game.
He should have known
she was the Saint since we had seen her together in the Mirror of Foresight before,
but he was brazenly feigning ignorance. However, he couldn't keep up the act
forever. "...If you say you are the Saint, please provide something to
convince us. To demand an audience with the Head Tower without any prior notice
is extremely rude." His irritation was barely concealed.
I had never met him,
but in my mind, I pictured the Head Tower picking his nose and going,
"Huh?" He was probably lazing around on the sofa right now. That was
the image I had of him.
"You see, what do
you mean 'something to convince you'..."
"S-Saint-sama!
...Excuse me, I am Nabari, from the Cloudy Country Church. I believe you are
Vice-Tower Master Veda of the Magic Tower. I sincerely apologize for this great
rudeness."
Nabari-san slid
between the angry Yuko and Veda. Looking at him up close, the handsome man had
deep dark circles under his eyes.
"I am fully aware
that prior contact is necessary before such an abrupt visit. However, I
apologize, but in our country, the church manages the branches, and the royal
castle grants permission for their use, so we cannot use them so
easily..."
In other words, while
the Magic Tower allowed easy use if the Head Tower gave a "go
ahead!", Cloudy Country was probably bound by strict rules. Even so,
Veda's attitude didn't change, as it was an unconvincing story. It wasn't as if
they absolutely couldn't use it, so the proper way would have been to contact
them first, even if it took time, before visiting. Besides, what did it mean
that they had replied that they were unaware of the Saint?
Receiving Veda's full
gaze, Nabari-san began to sweat profusely, even though it shouldn't have been
that hot thanks to the water sphere membrane. His expression was extremely
pained. He wanted to say something but couldn't. His mouth was opening and
closing. The curious gazes of the citizens were piercing him all over.
"Veda-sama, I
swear on my life, Yuko-sama is undoubtedly the Saint... The seal of the Cloudy
royal family is also here. Therefore, though it is presumptuous, I beg you, if
possible, could we explain in more detail... perhaps, in another
location?"
Veda accepted the
document with the seal from Nabari-san, his brow furrowed, and glanced at Yuko
and the others. Mufun, Yuko puffed out her chest proudly, while Nabari-san
shrank in contrast.
Another location, in
other words, they wanted to talk about something they couldn't say here. I see,
I understand. And so, Lotus, Ichi and the others, and I stealthily sneaked in,
goso-goso koro-koro, and started eavesdropping in front of the door.
Eavesdropping skill, switch on.
【You have acquired the title, Sneaky Foot Man】
At the long-awaited
announcement, I couldn't help but wonder if they could do something about the
naming sense.
