[WN] Shut-In : Chapter 113

Chapter 113

The Melancholy of Empress Emilia Part 1

Translator : PolterGlast

Emilia's POV

The Holy Elmore Empire.

A country with a venerable and long history, once said to have held all of the Eldenwood Continent in its grasp.

My job is to reign as its monarch.

Elmore is a country with relatively little gender discrimination, but even so, there aren't many queens.

On top of that, I had various struggles in solidifying my support base.

From a young age, I was loved by my father, the former king.

It wasn't because of my superior looks...

My father wasn't a foolish ruler to let such things cloud his judgment.

The reason I began receiving direct tutelage from my father was simply because, among his children, my abilities were the highest.

"Giselle would have been praised as a wise king in peacetime. But in the current situation, it's still difficult unless you're someone who excels in rough matters. Perhaps it's because Dorothea was kind, but many of my children seem to be poor at conflict..."

My father once confided such a weakness to me.

It was only once in my life that he revealed a weakness in front of me.

That's why it left such a strong impression on me.

Be strong.

I swore to become the strong king that my father desired.

The national power of the Holy Elmore Empire is high compared to other countries.

But the empire doesn't invade other countries. There are two reasons for that.

First, the current size is just right for the Holy Elmore Empire.

When the empire was still a great power spanning the continent, the king's eyes couldn't reach every corner.

As a result, local forces began to develop their own military power, which eventually led to separation and independence.

It would be possible to forcibly annex several countries, including the Grust Kingdom, right now. But even if we did, it would be meaningless if we couldn't manage them properly.

It's much better to keep national management relatively compact and concentrate on managing the empire.

And secondly, we don't have the leisure to fight among humans.

Our northern territory borders the Demon Realm, where the demons seem to live.

We say "seem" because we haven't been able to confirm it with our own eyes due to the deep forests and cliffs beyond.

Many demons are very belligerent.

Of course, there are exceptions, but at least most of the demons we've encountered so far have been incapable of communication.

The demons don't think about gains or losses, they just wield their power and cause terrible damage.

We're so busy dealing with them that we hardly have any leeway to do anything with humans.

That's why I decided to pretend nothing had happened even when I heard a certain report. Even if it made me angry.

--The Grust Kingdom performed the Hero Summoning ritual, which had been passed down orally for generations.

Without giving any notice to other human nations.

I knew that the country had documents about how to summon heroes.

But I didn't consider it a big problem.

Hero summoning was a kind of fairy tale. The last time it was done was in the distant past, only in legends.

So I didn't believe such uncertain information from so long ago.

--Until I heard the report that the Hero Summoning ritual was successful!

What in the world was that country doing at a time when all of humanity had to cooperate to avoid unnecessary conflict?

The Grust Kingdom is a mid-sized country that borders our Holy Elmore Empire across several unexplored territories.

The previous king was still decent, but Izel II, who recently ascended to the throne, was quite incompetent.

I was irritated by their lack of cooperation, such as holding back on the support they used to provide, but this time I was about to reach my limit.

Perhaps Grust was trying to become the leader of the human alliance against the demons.

They didn't seem to consider that if we were defeated, the demons would attack their country.

If they could effectively utilize the heroes, I wouldn't mind giving them the leadership.

Their eastern territory borders the Demon Realm to some extent. If they could capture that and advance eastward, they could attack the flanks of the demons we're fighting.

So I wish they would push up the front line instead of wasting time on a leadership struggle... but they were keeping all but one of the heroes as pets instead of sending them to the front line.

I was confused and didn't understand why they had summoned the heroes.

But since they didn't seem to be planning to do anything too flashy, I decided to shelve everything for the time being.

And when I started preparing to face the demons again... I had a visitor.

It was a mysterious man who claimed to be the thirty-first hero, even though only thirty were supposed to be summoned.

Accompanied by Miku Arisugawa, the Saintess of the Holy Church, he was called Masaru Kazuno.

And that was my first encounter with Masaru, with whom I would have a long relationship.
