[WN] A Hero From a Remote Village : Interlude 3

Interlude 3

The Most Unfortunate Person in This World

Translator : PolterGlast

Mergitos Graham Griffin Barnfield.

A demonkin who appeared in the Demon Lord's territory like a comet, the greatest Demon Lord in history.

With a multitude of monsters under his command, he unified the Demon Lord's territory at the young age of thirty.

Furthermore, he forged an alliance with the dragon clan, with whom they had been enemies for many years.

There was no longer anything to obstruct the Demon Lord's path; he would become the king who ruled the world.

Anyone who had ever seen the Demon Lord Mergitos even once would have thought so, but...

"My Lord, I have a report. The troll village of Pegiraka, the lizardman swamps of Jireb, and—the undead capital of Ri-Hulagar have been attacked by the dragon clan and annihilated."

"...Damn it. —Damn you all!!"

With an explosion of anger, Mergitos kicked his throne with all his might.

The custom-made marble throne shattered into pieces, and the room fell silent.

How did it come to this?

He had continued to make all the best possible moves, even managing to secure an alliance with the dragon clan, something that had not been achieved for many years.

So why was his demon kingdom facing its greatest crisis?

...No, the reason was perfectly clear.

It was all the fault of that small village.

To be more precise, it was the fault of the monstrous human in that village—Graham Ward.

He had thwarted every one of the Demon Lord's army's multiple assaults.

When Mergitos first heard that his army had been annihilated by the soldiers of such a small village, he thought it had to be some kind of mistake.

But the second and third attacks were also completely annihilated. On the fourth, Mergitos himself led the assault on the village, but he was forced to flee, unable to lay a hand on Graham Ward.

Those who actually witnessed Graham's fighting began to voice the opinion that it was better not to engage the humans, and for the first time since Mergitos became the Demon Lord, opinions were split.

Mergitos himself realized that Graham was not an opponent he could win against, and the doubt began to grow that if he couldn't even take a village that small, how could he possibly take the large cities that lay beyond it.

But even so, Mergitos, who had never known failure until now, could not choose to give up, bowing to a single human.

Realizing that any further failure would risk an internal collapse, Mergitos decided to scrape together the elite of his army and crush the village with all his might.

He had his three generals—Elder Lich Wiseperson; Fenrir Lord; and Chimeratoros—lead the army.

Furthermore, Mergitos went to the allied dragon clan and secured their help with the promise to cede half of the Demon Lord's territory if they succeeded in taking the village.

It was a negotiation based on the idea that even if he gave up half his territory, it would be a small price to pay for the vast lands inhabited by humans. And with that enormous price as the condition—the oldest and strongest of the dragon clan, the Ancient Dragon, leading the dragon army, agreed to lend their power.

It was already overwhelming force; he believed a single Ancient Dragon alone could easily annihilate the village. But he had been humbled and forced to retreat four times by Graham.

He would not let his guard down. He would pour all his forces into crushing that small village first—or so it was supposed to go, but the fifth invasion, for which he had gambled everything, also ended in failure.

"...Why has it come to this?"

No one responded to Mergitos's small, tear-filled whisper. It echoed in the vast room and was quickly swallowed by the silence.

His elite force of over 2,000 monsters, his three generals who had supported him for many years, were all killed, and the Ancient Dragon, whose help he had obtained by offering half his territory, was left in a ghastly state.

He had by no means underestimated Graham Ward.

He had viewed him as the strongest opponent in history and had set out to crush him with all his might and without the slightest bit of carelessness, but he was repelled.

He couldn't hide his shock that the Ancient Dragon, hailed as the strongest since ancient times, had been defeated, but the ones most shocked by this were not the demonkin or Mergitos, but the dragon clan who had revered it like a god.

The current situation is that the dragons, whose rage has become uncontrollable after the Ancient Dragon was killed, have begun to rampage in various parts of the Demon Lord's territory.

With the loss of his three generals, who were the pillars of his army, as well as all of his elite forces, he is unable to respond and is being destroyed piece by piece.

He wanted to tell them that if they were rampaging for revenge, they should attack Graham Ward, but even the dragon clan was too terrified to lay a hand on the one who killed the Ancient Dragon.

He was at his wit's end, with not a single move left to make.

Right now, the most unfortunate person in this world—was undoubtedly Mergitos.
