[WN] Jitsuwa 3-Domedatta : Chapter 121

Chapter 121

(Kyle Calendar Year 508: Age 15)

History of the Kingdom's Founding

Translator : PolterGlast

Academy life began, and among the classes I hadn't initially expected much from, there were a few that proved interesting. One of them was the history lecture. The content of the lectures often included information that was absolutely unobtainable in the frontier (Solis Viscountcy).

Today's lecture, concerning the founding of Kyle Kingdom, was something never touched upon in the books I had read up until now. Because of that, I was incredibly interested.

"Today's lecture will convey to you, students, the history concerning the founding of Kyle Kingdom, a history deliberately forbidden from being recorded in books and told only through oral tradition. I want you to take this as an opportunity to understand the hardships of our predecessors and appreciate their great achievements. As a cautionary note, recording the contents of this lecture, relaying what you hear to anyone, or preserving it in written form is strictly forbidden. Violators will be judged by the laws of the Kingdom, so please bear that in mind."

The lecture began with this preface. From the very beginning, I felt a sense of unease.

Why would history be a partial secret? Was there some hidden truth behind the founding of Kyle Kingdom?

At this point, I still knew nothing.

Before the Founding of Kyle Kingdom

Over 500 years ago, the area now occupied by Kyle Kingdom, the entirety of its current territory, was covered by a vast Demon Realm. Kyle Kingdom itself was said to be the Demon Realm. This region (the royal land), isolated from the human world by the Demon Realm, was called a land outside of humanity and was feared as a dangerous zone.

At that time, the nations outside Kyle Kingdom's current territory, located to the east, west, north, and south, each considered their respective current borders as the "Demon Realm's Edge." They maintained strict vigilance, striving with all their might to block any monsters attempting to invade their lands and the Demon Realm itself from encroaching further. It was said that a multitude of dangerous monsters inhabited the vast Demon Realm of the current Kingdom territory, whose exits they had sealed and feared.

And surprisingly, not only monsters but also the "People of the Demon Realm," who had adapted to life in the Demon Realm and had cut off ties with the human world, built tribal settlements within the Demon Realm and lived a meager life.

The People of the Demon Realm

The People of the Demon Realm lived a harsh and life-threatening existence within the Demon Realm, but they were said to possess the wisdom and power to survive it. They used their unique magic and, through generations of life, had developed techniques to counter monsters, both magical and otherwise.

The People of the Demon Realm were said to live in tribal settlements, organized by "clans" that shared a common magic, and did not intermingle with other clans. By preserving their bloodlines, each clan's unique magic was passed down, and every member of the People of the Demon Realm could wield the unique magic of their affiliated clan. Magic was classified into different types based on bloodline, and clans were separated by the type of magic they could wield. Since there were largely 12 bloodlines among the People of the Demon Realm at that time, they were called the "12 Clans." The 12 attributes of magic, each specialized by a different clan, became the origin of today's magic, and current Mages are also classified into these 12 types.

The total population of the People of the Demon Realm, combining all 12 clans, was said to be around 6,000 or more, but the actual number is uncertain. However, it is said that each clan had a population ranging from 300 to 600 individuals, though there were slight differences between clans.

"Incidentally, are you aware that even today there are remnants of where these ancient clans built their settlements? Conveniently, in this very classroom, there are individuals connected to the Solis Viscount, who governs the Estol territory. Haven't you ever wondered why you don't call the Estol territory the Solis territory?"

No one answered. Of course, I had wondered about it, but I had never bothered to investigate the reason.

"It is said that a clan presiding over Wind Magic lived in that land from ancient times. They themselves called the land they inhabited Estol, meaning those aided by the wind, in their ancient language. We, in respect for them and to not forget their footsteps, still preserve the name of that ancient land today. Within the Kingdom, besides the Estol territory, there are about three other places where ancient place names remain. Your assignment is to research these first. By the next lecture, investigate the other three locations, and if possible, their meanings. Well, the meaning... I imagine that would be difficult."

Hmm, probably... both are impossible, I think. Even we, who lived in Estol territory, didn't know its meaning. Is this also part of making us realize the value of the academy's existence? I adopted a slightly cynical stance and grasped the meaning of the homework this teacher had assigned.

People Beyond Humans

At that time, in other countries (outside Kyle Kingdom's territory), while not widespread, some frontier regions also had scattered Demon Realms. However, it was foreseen that even these limited areas would eventually be completely lost as cultivation progressed. Therefore, the People of the Demon Realm who once lived in those Demon Realms had already moved into the human world several generations ago. As generations passed, interbreeding among clans and interbreeding with the people of the human world progressed, and the unique magic possessed by each clan was said to have been lost.

And they were called the People Beyond Humans by those living in the human world, and many were shunned and persecuted. Because of this, all the People Beyond Humans lived in poverty, forced into harsh lives, with multiple clans clinging together, living meagerly in the remote frontier.

The Long March

Approximately 530 years ago, a young man named Kyle appeared in a village inhabited by the People Beyond Humans, located in the present-day northwestern frontier of the Gryphonia Empire. He would save the endangered People Beyond Humans and emerge onto the stage of history. He revived the lost magic (the power to wield magic) for the People Beyond Humans living in the village and enriched their lives, giving them the power to survive. So the legends say.

However, at one point, the Kingdom of that era, viewing the People Beyond Humans who had revived magic as a threat, dispatched a large army to the village where they lived to exterminate them. Sensing this crisis, Kyle and the People Beyond Humans, along with commoners who admired him, a group of over 300 people, abandoned their village and began a long escape, wandering through the frontier in search of a peaceful home. This long and arduous journey was called the "Long March," and after their difficult travels, they fled into the dangerous zone where a vast Demon Realm spread, the current territory of Kyle Kingdom.

Journey into the Demon Realm

The group led by Kyle, supported by the power of those who possessed revived magic, escaped the pursuit of the Kingdom's dispatched army and fled deeper and deeper into the Demon Realm. Their good fortune lay in the fact that the People Beyond Humans traveling with them were originally a collection of multiple clans.

The revival of unique magic possessed by multiple clans through Kyle, and their ability to utilize it, was extremely significant. Through the efforts of Mages of various attributes, they repelled successive monster attacks, and even in an inconvenient land, their lives were aided by magic. And they finally reached the central part of the Demon Realm.

Incidentally, the army that pursued them reportedly failed in its objective, encountered a taboo of the Demon Realm, and was instantly annihilated. Only the group led by Kyle reached the present-day Kylar, established it as their base, and began a new life.

Kyle first requested the Earth Mages to construct vast defensive walls to secure a safe dwelling place. Then, he requested the Fire Mages to burn down the demon forest that stretched across the entire area. Furthermore, he requested the Wind Mages to control the flames with wind, leading the fire deeper into the Demon Realm, burning down a vast area. After that, the burned land was watered by Water Mages, transforming it into fertile ground that yielded abundant harvests. Then, seeds and farming tools brought by Space-Time Mages were distributed, and the land instantly became farmland.

Thus, in the depths of the Demon Realm, which had rejected human entry, they carved out and expanded their own living sphere. As a result, they reportedly secured a safe and vast territory that could be called a peaceful home.

The Founding of Kyle Kingdom

According to legend, a few years after they moved into the deepest part of the Demon Realm, they made contact with the People of the Demon Realm, the first clan. The ones they made contact with were apparently the clan least suited for battle: those who wielded Holy Magic. It is said that they chose to preserve their clan's lineage in the safe zone that Kyle and his people had built, rather than endure the harsh life of the Demon Realm.

With the joining of one clan as a catalyst, over the next 10 years after their migration, the minority clans who had been living difficult lives abandoned their existence in the Demon Realm and successively joined Kyle's group. At that point, the population of Kyle's faction surpassed 2,000, and before anyone realized it, they had grown into the largest force among those living in the Demon Realm.

And 12 years after Kyle's migration, the situation suddenly changed. The clan that boasted the largest power among the People of the Demon Realm and wielded powerful Fire Magic joined Kyle's faction. After that, other clans who learned of this also began to join en masse. Ultimately, it is said that only the clan presiding over Darkness, which had boasted its power by uniting the ancient clans, did not join.

At this point, the force led by Kyle well exceeded 5,000 individuals, and upon reaching this number, Kyle declared the founding of the Kingdom. This was the birth of Kyle Kingdom. Even after the Kingdom's birth, the development of the Demon Realm continued. The Demon Realm stretching east, west, north, and south from Kylar was successively burned down, transforming into fertile farmland.

Thus, though still a small nation, with a vast buffer zone of impassable Demon Realm surrounding it, Kyle Kingdom, possessing the power of magic, quietly but rapidly expanded its influence and gained strength.
