Chapter 186
Capture
Translator : PolterGlast
Just as I did when surprising Nagi and Ran, I
approached the humanoid monster using stealth. The two of them had noticed me
immediately, but the humanoid monster shouting orders showed no sign of
noticing me.
Having realized the moment I saw it that it wasn't a
significant threat, I attacked instantly without bothering to observe it
further. I circled behind it and brought the back of my katana down hard onto
the nape of its neck.
"Ugh! W-Who—!"
I had swung with full force, but although the humanoid
monster fell to the ground, it didn't lose consciousness. Even though I used
the back of the blade, I intended to land a clean hit... it seems it's
surprisingly tough.
"Whoa there! I won't let you!"
"Won't let you escape either."
The other monsters reacted to the humanoid monster's voice
and tried to attack me immediately, but Nagi and Ran stepped in
to stop them. As we decided earlier, I'll leave those monsters to the two of
them and focus solely on subduing this humanoid monster.
"Dammit, you come in a group?! You bastards, I'll kill
you for sure!"
The humanoid monster was screaming as if in a rage, but its
center of gravity was shifted completely backward. Its gaze wasn't that of
someone blinded by rage either; its eyes were darting around, observing me, Nagi,
and Ran.
From this information, it was clear the humanoid monster had
no intention of killing us; it was fully planning to leave the fighting to the
monsters Nagi and Ran were engaging and make a run for it.
Possessing the intelligence to speak, it seemed to have realized from that
first strike that I was an opponent it couldn't match.
Since I knew it was going to run, it would be better to let
it go on purpose. There is no opponent easier to take down than one who has
turned their back on you.
"Nagi, Ran. You good over there?"
"Wait, Graham! Why are you looking away from the
enemy! It's going to attack!"
"You've gotten rusty."
Nagi and Ran
were the ones who panicked visibly when I completely took my eyes off the
humanoid monster and turned my back. Precisely because their surprise was
genuine and not an act, the humanoid monster seemed to think it was a golden
opportunity to escape.
Activating magic to create a sandstorm, it sprinted backward
with all its might. Feigning an intent to attack until the very end while
actually using a smokescreen tactic—this showed it had survived its fair share
of carnage.
However, nothing is easier to take down than an opponent you
know is fleeing. Ignoring the swirling sandstorm, I chased after the fleeing
humanoid monster at full speed.
It was fairly fast on its feet, but first, I slowed it down
with Gravity Magic. Then, targeting it as its movements grew sluggish, I
struck the back of its head with a chop this time.
Unlike striking with the back of a blade, a hand chop allows
me to shake the brain directly, so this time I succeeded in cutting off its
consciousness instantly. Blowing away the annoying sandstorm with Wind Magic,
I hoisted the unconscious humanoid monster onto my shoulder.
"Ehh—?! I just saw sand fly up, and now Graham
has already defeated the enemy monster!"
"I don't get it. The enemy was the one who used the
sand magic."
"Never mind that, just finish things up on your end.
It's a hassle, so make sure you defeat every last one of them."
"Roger! Just wait a sec!"
"Sorry I said you were rusty."
Nagi and Ran
regained their focus and instantly cleaned up the remaining monsters, who were
confused by the defeat of their humanoid leader. All that was left was to leave
this place immediately and get information out of this humanoid monster.
After binding it tightly so it couldn't move, I decided to
wake the humanoid monster by splashing water on it. I was using sturdy rope,
but I had Nagi and Ran keep their weapons at the ready just in
case.
"—Buhah! ...Was I... captured?"
"I'm glad you retain your memory of the events. Sorry
for the sudden attack, but I captured you because there are various things I want
to ask."
"W-Who would tell anything to a human!"
As expected, it won't talk. In that case... I have no choice
but to force it out.
"I wanted you to speak of your own free will, but if
you have no intention of doing so, it can't be helped. I'll have you speak by
force."
"No matter what you do, I'll never talk!"
I held my hand out toward the screaming humanoid monster. At
first, the humanoid monster just tilted its head, but I could tell it was
gradually starting to space out.
What I was using now was Hypnosis Magic, and the humanoid monster was in the process of entering a hypnotic state. Because the activation conditions are extremely strict, the situations where I can use it are limited, but it truly is a useful magic when applicable. I feel a little sorry for it, but let's get those informations out of it by force.
