Can a Mob Highschooler be a Normie: Chapter 153

Mob Kousei No Ore Demo Boukensha Ni Nareba Riajuu Ni Naremasuka: Chapter #153

Translators: Nyx and Ririi Rain

Episode 153: Change1

――――An urgent matter has come up, so I will be returning to the Guild.

With those words, Yaguchi departed. Once I returned (or hid) all my cards except for Dress, the surroundings returned to buzz with noises.

The evacuees, finally released from the crushing pressure of the B-rank cards, began whispering to one another—they made sure to keep their voices stay low.

The object of their gaze was, naturally, me. And their eyes held an undeniable terror. Even the members of the Adventurers' Club, who were supposed to be on my side, were no exception...

"............Huu."

I let out a small sigh, careful not to let anyone notice.

I knew it would come to this...

The cards I showed earlier possess enough power to easily massacre everyone in this school. Even without knowing the specifics of my cards, the sheer aura they radiated was enough to make that crystal clear.

Will that power be turned on us next? Will he use that violence to rule over us? It was only natural for them to fear that.

...Still. Even though I'd practically invited it, being stared at like a literal monster didn't exactly feel great.

Well, it can't be helped. It's true that being feared is less troublesome than being underestimated.

This will cut down shameless demands, and more importantly, it will stop any idiots from messing with my family.

... As for the Guild—the primary instigators—if my message got through to them, they should know better than to stick their noses in here again.

As I lost in thought pondering about such things while eyeing the crowd, I suddenly spotted a familiar face.

Without thinking, I headed toward him, and the people around him quickly receded like the ebb tide.

...No need to be that scared, you know...

I felt a slight pang of hurt, but I put on a smile and spoke,

"Long time no see, Nishida."

"Maro."

Nishida called my name, his expression somewhat stiff.

My friend, whom I hadn't seen in a month, had leaned out even more; he looked considerably more muscular overall, especially around his arms and shoulders.

Looks like he kept up the diet and the workouts...

I thought as I stood before him. Then, making sure no one else could see, I drove a fist into his gut.

"Guh?! Wh-what was that for...?"

"Hey, asshole. …I heard you were having a grand old time with your girlfriend while I was going through hell?"

I whispered the words into the ear of a wide-eyed, gasping Nishida.

"Ugh...!? H-how did you know... was it Higashino, that bastard?"

When I nodded silently, Nishida sighed and rubbed his forehead.

"Figures. Dammit."

" Must be nice, huh? Living the high life while I suffer,"

I growled, digging my knuckles into him. Nishida finally threw up his hands in surrender.

"A-alright, I’m sorry! Besides, it’s not like you’re a virgin, right, Maro? Since it's Maro, you have plenty to choose from."

"……………...Hmph. Well, yeah."

"Then it’s no big deal, isn’t it? You’re a guy with partners too, so you should understand how it gets in a situation like this, right?"

"Y-yeah, I guess so."

I pulled my fist back, a cramped smile on my face.

Damn it! Is this the legendary 'composure' of someone with a girlfriend?!

As I gritted my teeth internally, Nishida finally laughed, looking genuinely relieved for the first time.

"Well, I’m just glad Maro is still Maro."

…………………….

"And you’ve gone and changed completely."

"Heh heh, I’m looking pretty good, right? Check out these biceps. Even my abs are getting defined, you know!"

"...Guys who start working out, they kinda turn into narcissists, don't they?"

"What? Am I being creepy?"

"More like annoying."

"Harsh."

While we were chatting under the watchful eyes of the distant crowd, I noticed a shadow approaching us.

"Yo! It’s been a while."

"Shinto!"

Turning around, I saw the face of a familiar classmate.

"I saw that. You’ve become even more reliable in the short time you were gone."

There was a flicker of fear in Shinto’s eyes that he couldn't quite hide, but I pretended not to see it. Smiling, I patted his shoulder and we celebrated each other's safety.

"How did you get your hands on that many B-rank cards?"

"They were just regular drops."

"...I see. So your journey was that brutal, huh?"

Since I couldn't mention Luck Manipulation or Fate Manipulation, I gave a vague answer, and Shinto nodded, convinced.

I wondered what he was imagining—me mashing through thousands of B-Rank mobs, or me stealing cards from others?

I really hope it’s the former,

I thought, when Shinto suddenly snapped his fingers as if remembering something.

"Oh, right. Her Excellency said she wants you to come to the club room later."

"Huh? Oh, got it. I'll go now."

If she sent Shinto with a message, Anna must have been here too. Why not just tell me herself?

I wondered like that, but nodded anyway.

Probably because she saw me talking to Nishida and wanted to give me some time with my friend, or something like that.

I gave Nishida and Shinto a quick goodbye and headed for the club room where Anna was waiting.

"Whoo, you're the best, Senpai!" Anna exclaimed.

Waiting for me in the club room were Anna and Oribe, both flushed with excitement.

"Securing the Guild's verbal commitment to accept evacuees, followed by gunboat diplomacy! Perfect! What an absolutely flawless handling!" Anna continued speaking.

"Mm! This should keep the Guild from causing us any more trouble!" Oribe chimed.

"The look on that guy's face when he saw Senpai's power... Pffft!" Anna couldn’t contain herself.

The two of them—Anna especially—were immensely satisfied.

Apparently, my handling of Yaguchi was exactly what she wanted to see. She must have been incredibly stressed.

Then, Oribe’s face suddenly grew concerned.

"...But, Senpai, was it alright to reveal so much of your hand?"

At that, Anna stopped grinning and looked at me with a serious expression.

As card ranks get higher, skills start becoming more like a game of Rock-Paper-Scissors.

Just as I couldn't beat the Pied Piper of Hamelin without the Subordinate Sealing, without certain skills, you're pretty much finished...and this happens more and more often as the rank increases.

Exposing your hand is like letting your opponent know what you’re going to throw in Rock-Paper-Scissors before the game starts.

Showing your power is a deterrent, but it comes at the risk of letting the enemy plan countermeasures.

 But...

"Well, it should be fine."

I kept my trump cards like Athena and the C+ group hidden. What I showed was only my surface-level strength.

Skills like Suzuka's Spiritual Recurrence or [Breakthrough of Limits] can't be discovered just by looking.

Even if high-level battles are like Rock-Paper-Scissors, raw combat power still has the final say.

If the Pied Piper of Hamelin only had B-rank combat power, we could have managed even without the Trinity of Moon Goddesses.

That’s how big the gap in raw stats can be.

Even if someone prepared a perfect anti-meta deck2 against my members, I could simply overwhelm regular B-rank cards with brute force.

Plus, many of the members I did show—like Audrey—have evolved so much that it's hard to guess their original race. Especially Eliza in her jester outfit. She looks like nothing but a Devil.

Building an anti-meta deck against me would be extremely difficult. At best, they might try to bring cards specialized against females.

Above all...

“If worst comes to worst, we can just run.”

I have the cheat skill known as Hamelin's Flute.

Even if an opponent brings a perfect ‘anti-me’ deck, I can just use the Flute to escape.

It acts as a deterrent when the enemy has no counter, and an escape hatch if they do.

As long as Eliza is around, my safety is guaranteed.

...Which is exactly why the Star Mother Association, for whom escape via transfer is ineffective, is such a threat.

Seeing Anna and Oribe nodding, clearly understanding my answer, I turned to question them back,

"So, what’s our next move?"

"Hmm... I’d like to aim for a soft landing that keeps us in the superior position." Anna replied.

"Fighting them needlessly brings nothing but harm." Oribe added

I breathed a secret sigh of relief at their response.

Thank goodness. I knew it was unlikely, but I'd been worried—what if they saw my power and said, “Let's crush the Guild and put them under our control!"?

If they attacked us, that'd be one thing, but launching an invasion to subjugate a Guild? No way I can be bothered with that...

"...Still, we need to make sure they pay for what they did."

At my words, both of them nodded deeply.

All-out war was out of the question, but letting them get away after plotting against us was equally unacceptable.

Some form of compensation was absolutely necessary.

The question is, what to demand... but that also depends on their next move.

"By the way, what are your plans for the rest of the day, Senpai?"

Anna asked as the conversation wound down.

The rest of the day, huh...

"For now, I'm just going to spend some quiet time with my family."

It would still be a few hours before I could transfer to Ikebukuro, to where Dad is.

Until then, I intended to enjoy a long-overdue family time. I’d been so focused on assessing the situation since I got back that I’d barely had time to actually talk to them.

"Uh-huh. You've been working non-stop since you come back. That sounds good," Oribe nodded.

"Thank you so much for your hard work, even while you’re exhausted. Please, take your time and rest well," Anna added.

Once the meeting concluded, I spent some long-awaited family time with Mom and Ai.

Unfortunately, my family couldn't all be physically together, but we connected via Card Gear so my dad could also join the conversation.

We kept the uptight discussions—like the arrangement for meeting up with Dad tomorrow—to a bare minimum, and instead, we reminisced about old times.

The story of the first day we welcomed Maru into the house. The story of the day Ai was born.

The story of when I was in kindergarten. When I got lost at an amusement park and cried while wetting myself because I couldn't find the restroom.

The time Ai cried when I started middle school because we wouldn't be walking to elementary school together anymore.

Even though embarrassing episodes were peppered throughout, our stories never ran dry. Everyone naturally avoided the topic of the Angolmois disaster...

But the happy times passed in the blink of an eye, and soon the time arrived when the Star Mother Association's transfer gate could be used.

"Anna, Sayo――――take these."

Just before heading to the Star Mother Association, I stopped by the club room and handed some cards to the two of them.

"These are...!"

They tilted their heads as they took the cards, only for their eyes to widen in shock.

The cards were Freyja and Yomotsu-Ōkami3, which I’d obtained during the fight with the Hamelin Piper, as well as the Elf and Honoikazuchi no Kami4 Card Keys I’d picked up along the way.

As they looked at me, trying to gauge my intentions, I said,

"Use these to protect everyone while I'm away."

 Freyja and Yomotsu-Ōkami.

With these two, especially the top-tier B-rank Yomotsu-Ōkami, they should be able to handle almost anything.

Honestly, I’d been worried sick during my travels about how long this place would stay safe...

This was a precaution, both for the time I would be gone retrieving my dad, and in the unlikely event that I couldn't return here.

Them holding this much power would actually give me peace of mind.

The two of them nodded in understanding, but then scratched their cheeks awkwardly,

" Well, the thing is... we're a bit worried that we won't be able to handle cards with the [Pride of Deity] skill…" Anna confessed.

Of course, I’d already thought of that.

"If that happens, you can just use them for a rank-up. Freyja can be used to rank up your Elf, and Yomotsu-Ōkami can be used for Honoikazuchi no Kami."

I’d already proven with my own cards that the issues caused by [Pride of Deity] can be solved through ranking up.

Considering that [Pride of Deity] skill vanished not just for veterans like Eliza and Yuki, but even for relatively new faces like Audrey and Dress, it was safe to assume that as long as there’s enough favor for them to accept a ‘name’, the [Pride of Deity] can be neutralized.

Since [Pride of Deity] isn't strictly a negative skill, I wouldn't say losing it is always a good thing, but it should at least prevent the situation where your card refuses to follow orders when you need them most.

That was exactly why I included the Elf and Honoikazuchi no Kami Card Keys.

With Minor Change, the skills of the target card can be gained while the original personalities are kept.

If they rank up into Freyja and Yomotsu-Ōkami from there, they'll end up with B-rank cards that possess the [Breakthrough of Limits] skill.

...Well, using Minor Change5 on same-race cards, like Elf to Elf, does have the downside of completely overwriting the acquired skills with the target card's skills. But Anna and Oribe are smart enough to figure out a workaround—like inserting a suitable card in between.

"To use for a rank-up... are you really sure?"

As I was thinking along those lines, Anna asked me with a serious expression.

Giving them permission to use them for rank-up was effectively transferring ownership.

Even though we were a ‘destiny-bound community’ trying to survive Angolmois together, handing over B-rank cards like this was bordering on being too generous.

But the reason I was giving them these cards was that it would exponentially increase the safety of my family and my comrades, so...

"It's fine. Think of it as an apology from me."

As long as this group is a community bound by the goal of surviving Angolmois, there’s an implicit agreement: “Don't act selfishly” and “Don't cause trouble for everyone.”

Despite that, I had run off on the very first day and ended up being away for nearly a month.

Frankly speaking, it was a colossal blunder—a near-miracle that everyone welcomed me back so warmly.

It was lucky that I’d left Hesperides with Mom. If I had taken it with me...

The thought alone sent shivers down my spine.

Not just the evacuees, but even Anna and the others might have been in grave danger.

If I were the type to just brush it off by saying, "It was out of my control, okay? It turned out fine and we're all safe now, so what's the big deal?" then I shouldn't be in a group in the first place. I’d be completely unfit to belong to a team.

Protecting the school building and equipment from mechanical-destruction monsters like Gremlins using Yuki’s [Lord of The Territory]—that was supposed to be my job for the team.

No matter the circumstances, I had abandoned that duty. I shouldn't even have a right to be here.

On top of that, I’m about to leave again to get my dad.

Let's be honest. I'm practically taking advantage of Anna and the others' generosity. You can even say I'm leveraging my own usefulness to blackmail them.

It's like I'm saying with my actions, "You guys would be in trouble without my strength, right? So let me be a little selfish."

An act that put a “Cheap!” label all the invisible effort Anna and the others had put in while preparing for Angolmois.

Planning the operation to swiftly retrieve the students' families once Angolmois began. Preparing cross-space cards, food cards, various daily necessities, entertainment like manga and DVDs. Leasing all sorts of machinery... Anna and the others arranged all of it. Some contracts were even made under the name of Oribe's family members to avoid suspicion about students borrowing so much equipment.

During all that, I was just diving into dungeons and using Fate Manipulation to gacha for cards to secure funding. Regardless of the value of my contribution, my efforts pale in comparison to Anna and the others.

Overvaluing your own contributions while devaluing others... that's the quickest way to become the most hated person in an organization.

I have to remember that everything we have now wouldn't exist if a single member of the Adventurers’ Club was missing.

And yet, I intend to act on my own again. So, I need to offer something that made it permissible.

The couple of cards I handed over were like compensation for that.

"Hmm, let me just say—"

As if picking up on my train thoughts, Anna frowned slightly in distress as she spoke,

"The original policy of the Adventurers’ Club was to prioritize the safety of the members and their families above all else during Angolmois. Senpai, your actions in going to rescue your family did not violate that policy in any way. Being unable to return due to the spatial isolation that followed was also an unavoidable circumstance. Therefore, we have no intention of blaming you for your month-long absence or for going to get your father now."

Oribe gave a silent, firm nod of agreement to Anna’s words.

" ...However, that is that. If Senpai says you wish to leave these cards behind for the safety of the family you left here, then we will accept them with gratitude.

It will definitely increase our security, and honestly... the truth is, if you’re offering, we want them!"

Anna gave me a wink. I gave a wry smile, thinking “What an honest bloke,” when Oribe spoke up,

"That said, I admit it feels somewhat too much. So, I’ve decided to give you some change."

"Change?"

As I tilted my head, Oribe pulled a single card from the Holder at her waist and handed it to me.

"This is..."

It was the Persephone card with [Zero Existence] skill—the one Oribe had bought a while back.

"I’m sorry it’s not nearly enough to match what you gave, but that's all I can offer right now..."

"No, this helps a lot."

I answered from the bottom of my heart as Oribe lowered her head slightly in a bashful apology.

At the time it dropped, I didn't feel like I absolutely needed it for my deck, so I passed on the purchase and let Oribe have it. But now, Persephone had become a card I definitely wanted.

The reason for that was Prima, who had ranked up into a Siren.

If I used Minor Change to evolve Prima from a Siren to Persephone, she would gain the ability to infinitely summon Sirens, which would exponentially boost the deployment power of the Harpy choir6.

This would also make Eliza's [Hamelin's Flute] skill much easier to use.

The only hurdle was that this specific Persephone was shackled by the [Zero Existence] skill, which disabled her Subordinate Summoning. To use the card effectively, I first need to remove that [Zero Existence] skill... but I had a Key Item in mind for that.

That's right—the large scythe dropped by Demeter, whom I defeated just the other day.

Demeter is Persephone's mother and her legitimate rank-up path. There was a very high probability for her to be this Persephone’s Spiritual Recurrence destination.

If the Persephone could perform Spiritual Recurrence, I’d also be fulfilling the contract made when recruiting Prima.

My agreement with her was to ‘rank her up to the same level as my other comrades’. Since my party included not just B-ranks, but C+ members like Mea and Myra, getting her to C+ would technically satisfy the promise.

Yeah, yeah, this is an excellent addition...

 I nodded to myself.

"And here's something from me."

This time, Anna handed me a small, fancy-looking velvet pouch and a card.

Looking closer, the pouch seemed to contain Garnets and Diamonds. It looked like they'd been tackling the school even while I was away. Since I can never have enough Garnets and Diamonds, I was genuinely happy to accept them.

 As for the card...

"...A Shimenawa7?"

It wasn't a monster card, but a carded magic item. As I tilted my head, wondering what kind of item it was, Anna explained,

"Do you remember when we did fireworks during our training camp? This is the Field Altering magic item I used back then."

"Oh! That one!"

The one from when we trained for the MonColo race!

 I snapped my fingers.

If I recall, she used it to forcibly change the field to night-time so we could watch the fireworks.

Even though it wasn't that long ago, it felt like an eternity had passed since then.

"This is about the most valuable thing I can offer right now, and I thought it would have great synergy with your deck, Senpai."

True. Between the Trinity of Moon Goddesses and my other cards, I had many members that synergize well with the night field.

It could serve as good preparation should I ever face enemies like the sun deities who seal away night or moon.

 Just then—

Ma-Master, um, can I see that for a second?

Suzuka, who had been standing behind me while invisible, called out, her voice slightly high-pitched.

Huh? No, wait... could it be?!

Excited inside, I handed the Ama-no-Iwato Shimenawa card to Suzuka as she revealed herself.

Ignoring Anna and Oribe, who stared curiously at her sudden appearance, Suzuka stared intensely at the card as if confirming something...

Un, no doubt about it. I think this is one of my Key Items.

"Seriously!?"

I shouted it out loud before I could stop myself.

"Eh!? What? What is it?" Anna asked.

"No way...?" Oribe reacted.

Startled by my sudden outburst, the two of them widened their eyes in surprise. Then, as if instantly grasping the situation, their expressions shifted, and they sought confirmation with their eyes.

 I nodded at them.

"Yeah. Suzuka reacted to the Ama-no-Iwato Shimenawa. ...It's a Key Item."

"To the Ama-no-Iwato Shimenawa! Does that mean...!?"

"You mean... Amaterasu-Ōmikami8!?"

There was only one possible destination for the Spiritual Recurrence of Seoritsu-hime that involved the Ama-no-Iwato Shimenawa.

The supreme deity in Japanese mythology, Amaterasu-Ōmikami. There was no other candidate.

That’s right, some people say Seoritsu-hime is the same as the Aramitama (rough spirit) of Amaterasu: Ōmikami—Tsukisakaki Izunomitama Ame-so-mukahitsuhime-no-mikoto9.

With that connection, the possibility of a Spiritual Recurrence exists... But to think it's not only Ibaraki-dōji and Suzuka Gozen for her, but also Amaterasu-Ōmikami...!

"Even if it's just through Spiritual Recurrence, becoming Amaterasu-Ōmikami? Isn't that basically the 'strongest'?!" Anna shouted.

"Yeah...! If things go well, putting up a resistance against the Star Mother Association might even be possible!" Oribe added.

There are no recorded cases of Amaterasu-Ōmikami being turned into a card, even overseas. This means that even in foreign lands where she isn't ‘native’, Amaterasu-Ōmikami holds an A-rank status.

Here in Japan, her homeland, her rank would undoubtedly be upper A-rank! Maybe even top A-rank!

Even the Star Mother Association likely doesn't have many cards of that caliber.

If I have even one card of that level, it will be enough as a deterrent!

"But, if we’re talking about Amaterasu-Ōmikami, gathering all the Key Items is going to be a nightmare..."

We had been celebrating like kids, but Oribe’s grounded comment brought us back to reality.

She was right. Even Ibaraki-doji (a lower A-rank), required two items: 'Higekiri' and 'Ibaraki-dōji's arm10'. For Suzuka Gozen, considered lower or mid-tier, required three or more...

For Amaterasu-Ōmikami, likely upper or top A-rank, it wouldn't be surprising if she required four or five key items.

Could I, who hadn't even finished gathering the Key Items for Suzuka Gozen, possibly pull it off...?

"... ...Well, let's not get our hopes up too high. We'll look for the Items and consider it lucky if we find them."

"Yeah."

Well, we’d lost track of time thanks to this unexpected discovery. It was time to go.

I signaled to Eliza, and she began to play her Flute.

As the melody flowed, I addressed the two of them,

"Alright then, I'll be counting on you. ...Ah, just to be safe—don't go erasing the dungeon in Tachikawa just because you got those Card Keys, okay?"

It'd be a pain if time flew by at breakneck speed while I was gone, and it'd be a hassle if the Guild or the school evacuees started asking about the missing dungeon or the Card Key.

"You don't have to tell us that. We know,"

Anna replied with a wry smile. I returned the smile with a "Yeah, right."

I then reiterated my departure one last time,

"Alright, I'm off. Call me immediately if anything happens."

"Yes. Please be careful, Senpai."

"I will."

Watched over by a worried Anna and Oribe, I teleported to the Star Mother Association's shelter.

TipsDifferences in Key Items for Same-Name Races Across Nations

The card races are considered different even if they share the same race name.

This is because, despite the identical names, their combat power and skills differ, and cards from other countries cannot be used for revival.

On the other hand, the rank and abilities of magic items emerging from dungeons are uniform worldwide, unlike cards.

This raises the question: “What happens to the Key Items for cards whose ranks differ greatly between their native land and other countries?”

It's not uncommon for a card to be A-rank in its home country but only B-rank elsewhere.

For example, Suzuka Gozen is A-rank in her home country of Japan, but in other countries she's C-rank or, at best, B-rank.

It would be unfair if a C or B-rank Spiritual Recurrence required the exact same Key Items as the A-rank Japanese version.

Perhaps for this reason, the foreign ‘Suzuka Gozen’ often requires only one of the Sanmyō no Tsurugi, unlike the Japanese Suzuka Gozen.

Some scholars view this as a form of leniency implemented by the dungeon.

Notes:

As in a purchase

Taking the info from Yu Gi Oh fandom, an anti-meta deck is any deck that is built to counteract the most popular decks being played.

Appeared in ch. 125

Elf and Honoikazuchi no Kami: Anna and Oribe’s cards, respectively. Reminder, Honoikazuchi no Kami is the one who has abilities related to thunder.

Reminder: Changing the race by consuming a card of another race of the same rank and overwriting the stats with a card of the same race is called a Minor Change. Like rank up, it takes over part of the original card's appearance and ego, and depending on proficiency and luck, skills can be taken over, but in the case of the latter (overwriting with a card of the same race), the stats will be completely overwritten. Since it offers very little benefit to ordinary adventurers and few use it for anything other than increasing their rank, some are unaware of its existence.

Refer to Siren’s inborn skill, [Besieged from All Sides]: Infuses songs with magic, enhancing the power and effect range of magic skills. The singing voice summons Harpies as subordinates. Harpies can be summoned infinitely. This skill includes Magic Song, Musical Performance, and Chorus. (Magic Song: Infuses songs with magic skills, expanding their effect range) (Chorus: Combines the effects of one's own and others' musical skills to expand their range)

The sacred rope that can be found at shrines.

In Japanese mythology, she is depicted as the sun goddess. Furthermore, she is also mentioned as a divine ancestor of the Japanese imperial family. Reminder, her story was briefly mentioned before in the description of Suzuhiko-hime card in ch.137

The name of a deity that came up as the one giving an oracle to Emperor Chūai, a legendary emperor traditionally listed as the 14th ruler of Japan (reigning from 192 to 200 AD).

10  The raw mentions it as such, but the item’s actual name is Great Oni's Arm
