[WN] Sweet Herb Laboratory : 36

Interlude: Jilgista Kingdom 3

Today as well, Carter tore up the letter of complaint that had arrived, handed the reagent recipe to his assistant, and yelled at him.

Make this immediately! I will not allow you to go home until it's done!!

Half a year since Layla left the Jilgista Kingdom. In this half a year, Carter's gears had completely gone out of whack, and now the trust in the Medicinal Herb Laboratory was only on a path of steady decline.

The assistant he had just scolded was the third one, and the Second Prince had warned him that there would absolutely be no next replacement.

Carter himself had no idea why the reagents kept failing so much.

That was to be expected; even when Layla was there, he had been making reagent recipes. After a fashion, anyway. And he would hand them to Layla, ordering her, Make it based on this.

However, the reagents Layla created faithfully according to the written contents were not usable products. When she told him that, he reprimanded her, saying it was her duty to improve upon it based on the recipe he handed her.

At first, she reported the contents of the improvements one by one, but after Carter found it bothersome and yelled at her, Don't check with me for every little thing, that's your job, Layla stopped consulting him and began to think for herself and create the reagents.

The reagents completed in this way were by now completely different from the recipes Carter had made. In some cases, all the medicinal herbs used were different. Of course, since she handed the recipes of the created reagents to Carter, he had countless opportunities to know that, but he did not try to know.

The assistant, of course, was making the reagents according to Carter's instructions. That was why they were failing.

That being said, sometimes a reagent would actually be completed. Normally, one would carefully check for side effects before handing it over to the Pharmaceutical Department, but Carter didn't even do that.

Giving it a quick glance and confirming that it was made according to his instructions, he had it taken to the Pharmaceutical Department just like that. The result of that was a massive amount of complaint letters. The medicines made by the Pharmaceutical Department were also distributed to the market. Although there were medicines made by the private sector, the ones made by the Pharmaceutical Department were popular for being more effective.

Now, it had reached the point where people in the streets were saying it was better not to buy the medicines made by the Pharmaceutical Department.

They got a rash when they applied the salve. The poultice peeled off immediately and was useless. Their diarrhea wouldn't stop after taking the painkiller.

The complaints were endless.

Moreover, several of the important documents handed to Aisha had gone missing, and complaints kept coming in one after another from various departments saying they hadn't received any communication or asking what happened to that matter. Even if he tried to ask Aisha, she just tilted her head and teared up, getting nowhere.

The Pharmaceutical Department made a report to the King regarding the deterioration in the quality of the Medicinal Herb Laboratory's new medicines, and based on that, Carter was summoned by the King yesterday.

Carter, sweating cold bullets, desperately continued to string together excuses.

Failures are inherent in new medicines. His assistant is completely useless. Furthermore, the Pharmaceutical Department isn't making them exactly as he wrote. And so on.

The King looked at Carter, who was stringing together words out of desperation, with suspicious eyes, and gave him a stern warning that the next failure would not be forgiven.

Carter wasn't the only one panicked by this. The Second Prince, who had backed Carter's research results, was also driven by impatience. Despite throwing his support behind him and even rewarding him, not a single decent medicine had been made in this half a year. On the contrary, the quality of existing medicines had dropped, dissatisfaction was welling up from various departments, and elementary mistakes like the loss of important documents were occurring one after another.

Develop a medicine that will take everyone by surprise.

Furrowing his brows deeply, he ordered Carter.

At that ghastly expression, Carter had no choice but to shrink back and answer, Certainly. And so, unusually staying up late into the night thinking, he handed the completed reagent recipe to his assistant just now. Therefore, Carter thought.

(My job is done with this. The assistant will finish up the reagent for the rest.)

In his mind, there was no thought of making the reagent over and over and improving it each time. Because that was Layla's job. As for the side effects of the completed reagent, just like up until now, they wouldn't be checked. In this way, the "new medicine that takes everyone by surprise" ended up being developed.

When autumn comes, a contagious disease that causes repeated vomiting and diarrhea begins to spread. It is highly infectious and takes about a week to fully recover from. Although healthy adults do not die from it, infants and the elderly die every year from this disease; a new medicine to completely cure it. It ended up being made so simply and easily. Without repeating experiments, and without checking for side effects.

To make matters worse, the Second Prince, satisfied with those results, began saying he would reward Carter again. Not for Carter's sake. But to show his own presence, which had completely faded into the background lately, to those around him.
