Volume 1
Chapter 15
I Received a
Request
Translator : PolterGlast
We were now sitting in
the chairs of the guild's tavern, as instructed by the guild master.
We were to receive
what is called a White-rank guild card.
The five crystals on
the board—apparently, they could measure a person's experience points, and the
guild master said that the more experience points you had, the brighter they
would glow: black, indigo, blue, water, gray, and white. However, since there
is a limit to the amount of experience points that can be measured by a single
crystal, they seem to have connected five of them to measure a larger amount of
experience points. If one crystal glows white—indicating the limit—the next
nearest crystal immediately starts to glow, and if it also turns white, the next
crystal starts to glow, and so on.
The guild's rank seems
to be determined by the number and color of the crystals that lit up. For
example, if three crystals lit up and the third crystal was indigo, you would
be called a Rank 3 Indigo Adventurer.
However, there are
rare cases where even five crystals cannot measure a person. People like us.
Such people are said
to have exceeded the amount of experience points that a person can obtain and
are called superhuman White-rank adventurers.
The difficulty of the
jobs that adventurers are assigned seems to be determined by their rank, but
White-ranks can be assigned jobs of any difficulty.
Experience points can
be obtained by defeating ferocious creatures called magical beasts. Moreover,
the stronger the opponent, the more experience points you get.
Apparently, the
animals I defeated were quite powerful magical beasts. Kakyoin-san was always
near me, so she must have benefited from the experience points.
"Sorry to keep
you waiting,"
The guild master came
towards us.
"Here, these are
your guild cards."
He handed us two white
cards, one in each hand.
"Thank you."
Kakyoin-san took it
with a smile. I followed suit and reached for the other guild card.
Apparently, our names
are written on these guild cards, but I can't read what's written at all.
"Well then, I'll
return to my duties. Do your best, White-rank adventurers."
"Yes, we
will,"
The guild master
retreated to the back again.
"Now then,
Kushina. About the future..."
Bang!
Just as Kakyoin-san
was about to say something, the guild's entrance was opened forcefully.
"An urgent
request from the Gilmberg family!! Our Lady Akana of the Gilmberg family is
returning to the royal capital! We would like you adventurers to escort her on
her journey!!"
Those words were
spoken by the man wearing the most flashy and largest helmet and armor of the
three soldiers who had entered the guild. From the content of his speech, it
could be inferred that he was a knight from some distinguished family.
Since it was a request
from such a distinguished family, it was probably a well-paid one. Yet, instead
of making a fuss as they had before, the adventurers were all quiet at once. No
one dared to make eye contact with those knights. Why...?
"Kushina, let's
go to the reception desk for now."
"Y-Yeah..."
Kakyoin-san walked
towards the reception desk in the back, as if she didn't want to get involved
while giving those three knights a cold look.
"...When nobles
are abandoned by the people, it's the end for them. If they don't understand
that, then that family is finished too."
"Is that
so?"
"..."
Since Kakyoin-san had
said something like that in a hushed voice, I couldn't help but interrupt.
"Did you hear
what I just said?"
"Yeah."
"………Just pretend
you didn't hear that."
"Is that how it
is?"
"That's how it
is!"
Kakyoin-san turned
around and looked ahead, slightly angry, saying, "Gosh..." What had
upset her so much?
"Well... at least
they didn't bring their young lady here. They seem to know their own reputation.
Then maybe there's still hope."
She said something
else in a hushed voice, but since I had reacted last time and she had gotten
angry, I decided not to say anything this time.

"Well then,
Kushina, I want you to take a request."
Kakyoin-san said so.
"We need money
for everything. It won't hurt to have it. Besides, I wanted you to know the
format of the request..."
"Yeah,
understood."
"───I think I should say
this... You're really not good at talking, are you?"
Perhaps because I had
answered while she was speaking, Kakyoin-san looked at me with squinted eyes.
But then, she sighed
and continued.
"Well, whatever.
Anyway, just take any request. The guild master already told us how to take on
a request. You remember how to do it, right?"
"Yeah."
"Then please.
Since a subjugation request would be good for you, prioritize that. Oh, and by
the way, they seem to be buying other monsters besides the target creatures of
the request, so if you hunt anything else, bring it back with you."
"Roger that."
"I've also gotten
permission from the guild master, so I'll gather information in the reference
room at the back of the guild. It would be inconvenient to not be able to read
or write forever. Come find me when you're done with the request."
"Got it!"
After the measurement,
she was talking to the guild master about something, and it turned out she had
gotten permission to use the reference room. Kakyoin-san is really thorough.
The guild master told
me that there are two ways to accept a request.
One is to take a piece
of paper with the request written on it—from a large board in the corner of the
guild. There are several of these papers posted, so you can take a request that
suits you and have it accepted at the reception desk. Most adventurers use this
method to accept requests because there are usually many newly posted requests
on the board and it's easy to find a suitable one.
The second way is to
have the receptionist directly mediate a request for you. Most of these
requests are not easily accepted or are stored to prevent other adventurers
from taking them carelessly. In other words, they are mostly troublesome
requests.
Normally, it would be
better to take a request from the board, but... I can't read.
Okay, I'll have the
receptionist pick one out for me.
I walked towards the
counter where there was a free receptionist.
"Umm, excuse me,
I'd like to take a request."
"Yes, I
understand."
"..."
"..."
"..."
"...Perhaps you'd
like me to mediate?"
"Yes."
There was a strange
pause just now... but I guess it doesn't matter.
"U-Umm... First,
may I please see your guild card?"
"Here you
go."
I handed the guild
card I received from the guild master.
"Let me check...
W-White───M-M-My
apologies!!!!"
The receptionist was
raising and lowering her head up and down very quickly. What's wrong?
"Um..."
"Ah!! A request,
wasn't it!? I'll prepare it right away!!!!"
The receptionist
rushed to the back as soon as I spoke. E-Eeh...
"I-I apologize
for the wait!!!!"
The receptionist
returned, out of breath, holding several sheets of paper.
"Are you
okay?"
"Y-Yes, I'm fine!
Ah!! I'm so sorry!!"
"Eeh..."
Why is she apologizing
so much?
"H-Here are the
three types of requests we can mediate for you! Here you go!!"
The receptionist
spread out three sheets of paper on the table for me to see. Well, I can't
read.
"Um... I just
need to accept one of them. Do you have any recommendations?"
"R-Recommendations?"
"Yes."
For some reason, the
receptionist's expression twitched. Why?
"Uh... Are you
sure you're okay with anything?"
"Yes, I am."
"Then..."
The receptionist
timidly handed me a piece of paper.
"A request to
subjugate the magical beast, Poilsneg, that appeared near the forest a little
further from here. The reward is 200 gold for each one killed. If possible, we
would appreciate it if you could exterminate them all───What do you
think?"
The receptionist read
the request, trembling slightly while watching my reaction.
Hmm... 200 gold for
one. I don't really know the value of money, so I honestly can't judge if it's
good or bad.
But, if I get 200 for
each one I hunt, and if they recommend exterminating them all, I don't have to
worry about hunting too much. It's pretty good... I guess?
"I'll take
it."
"Eh!?
Really!?"
Why is the receptionist
so surprised? She's the one who offered me the request.
"Yes."
"T-Thank you very
much!!"
Now the receptionist
is moving her head up and down to thank me. She's really overreacting, isn't
she?
"The request has
been accepted! I wish you good luck!!"
"Yes, thank
you."
And so, after
receiving instructions from the receptionist, I headed to the village that had
made the request.
