[WN] Three Skills : Volume 1 Chapter 14

Volume 1

Chapter 14

I Checked the Experience Points

Translator : PolterGlast

We were now walking down a corridor behind the counter, accompanied by the guild master.

Apparently, we needed something called a guild card, and they had to check a lot of things to issue it, and since we needed various tools to do that, we were moving to a room where the tools were kept.

"Excuse me?"

Kakyoin-san called out to the guild master.

"Hm? What is it?"

"There's something I'm curious about... Actually, as soon as we entered this building, we got into a fight right away. Is that okay?"

"A fight, huh?"

The guild master looked at us with a puzzled expression.

"Yeah, that's right. As soon as we entered, we were harassed by a group of three people we didn't know. I had Kushina throw them to the wall."

"Oh... Just that?"

"Just that, you say?... you"

Kakyoin-san looked at him as if dumbfounded.

"That much is fine. That's a daily occurrence around here. Those guys shout without caring even though they're inside the building. So, I don't mind a little scuffle. After all, you didn't make a hole in the building, did you? If you did, I would have come out first. If not, then it's like, 'do as you please'."

"Haa~... So, as long as you don't cause any trouble to the guild, you can do whatever you want?"

"Exactly. After all, you're just members, and we're just intermediaries. We simply mediate the work and leave the rest to the members and the clients. That's the guild's stance."

Hearing that, Kakyoin-san let out another sigh.

"Is that really okay? There's a high possibility that the client will be disadvantaged."

Hearing those words, the guild master looked back at us in surprise and said,

"Oh... did you notice?"

and smiled.

"It's not like I noticed, it's something anyone would figure out with a little thought."

"I see. Well, it's true that friction between adventurers and clients is a problem for the guild (us). It used to be common for powerful adventurers to threaten clients living in remote villages and receive unreasonable rewards."

"………It used to?"

"Yes. If that continued, the guild could lose its credibility. So, we took measures. Have you ever heard of [Justiciars]?"

"No, I haven't."

"I thought so. They are, so to speak, law-abiding executioners who support the guild behind the scenes. With the introduction of this system, such problems have decreased dramatically."

"Can that really be reduced by just one system?"

"It does. Because the [Justiciars] are incredibly strong."

"...I see."

Kakyoin-san replied, seemingly exasperated by the guild master's explanation.

It seems the guild is completely meritocratic.

"Oh, we're here."

The guild master stopped in front of a certain door.

"Come in."

After the guild master opened the door and went inside, we followed him.

The room was simple. It was made of orange bricks, and there was nothing else particularly eye-catching. In the center of the room was a small crystal on a round table. There was also a simple wooden shelf in the upper left corner of the room, on which there were several wooden boards with small crystals embedded in them.

"Are we going to measure here?"

"That's right. First, we'll check if you've ever committed a crime."

There are three measurements required to issue a guild card: checking criminal records to determine if the person is trustworthy,  measuring mana to see how many monsters they have defeated, and measuring pure combat ability through a mock battle.

Because this was a special case, the schedule didn't match up, so the mock battle would be done at a later date.

"I was wondering, but how do you check that?"

"All you have to do is hold your hand over this crystal. The rest will be clear."

So, Kakyoin-san shrugged and—while doing so—placed her hand on the crystal. I followed suit.

The crystal lit up, emitting a soft white light.

"Hmm, no problem. No criminal record."

The guild master wrote something on a piece of paper that was sandwiched in something like a clipboard he was holding.

"Wait a minute. Did you just measure that?"

"That's right. If you haven't committed a crime, it will glow white. If you've committed a minor crime, it will glow from blue to purple. If you've committed a major crime, it will glow black. The principle behind it... I don't get it either!"

"That's a mess..."

Kakyoin-san was surprised by such a convenient tool, but she seemed to be exasperated at the guild master confidently saying that he didn't know the principle. I was also surprised by this tool.

"Next is the mana measurement."

Saying so, the guild master went to the wooden shelf and took one of the many boards and returned.

"...I was wondering."

"What is it?"

"Is this mana measurement necessary?"

"...What do you mean?"

The atmosphere around the guild master became a little tense.

Not caring about the atmosphere, Kakyoin-san continued.

"Well, aren't you going to measure our actual abilities in a mock battle soon? So, I'm wondering what the point of this measurement is."

"………Are you serious?"

The guild master looked at her as if questioning her sanity.

"Even if you look at me like that, I don't understand, so I'm asking. Can you tell me?"

Kakyoin-san shrugged again.

"………Alright."

Seeing her expression, the guild master seemed surprised to realize that we really didn't understand, and he agreed.

"Still, to not know even this... Where did you two come from? Well, okay. Listen. The mana measurement is..."

From there, the guild master carefully explained the meaning of this measurement.

Apparently, in this world, [mana] refers to one's experience points.

Just like the creatures I fought in the forest, there are many ferocious creatures in this world. They are collectively called 'magical beasts', and one of their common characteristics is mana.

Mana is said to be a powerful energy that, when housed in the body, can enhance physical abilities. Magical beasts have an abnormally large amount of it, which is why they are troublesome creatures for humans.

And here's the main point. When a magical beast dies, the mana it possesses is scattered into the air.

However, for some reason, the mana that was in a living being cannot exist in the air for a long time, so it floats in the air seeking a new host in order to not disappear. ───As a result, it enters the body of someone who has defeated a nearby magical beast.

It's also called [experience points]. The more mana you have, the stronger your body becomes, and the more powerful you become.

"───That's all I can explain about mana. Don't ask any more questions. I don't know anything more than that."

After hearing the explanation, Kakyoin-san rested her right hand on her left elbow and placed her left hand on her chin, as if thinking.

"………So, you're measuring a person's experience by measuring mana?"

"That's right. In a mock battle, you can only measure your abilities. Experience is difficult to see."

"I see..."

The guild master handed us a board with several crystals embedded in it.

Looking closely, I saw that there were scales on the board, and there were tubes connecting the crystals in the center of the board.

"Here, just put your hand on it like you did before. Let's measure it."

As he said so, Kakyoin-san reached out to the board without hesitation. I followed suit.

All five crystals glowed white.

"They all glow white, huh? You two are some kind of monsters."

"Did it measure correctly?"

"Yeah. This board can measure the mana of two people at once. I was able to measure your experience levels without any problems."

"That's good. So, what's the assessment?"

Kakyoin-san smiled.

"I can't measure any higher with this board—in other words, it's the highest value. You two are very promising."

"That's good to hear."

Kakyoin-san smiled again.

"We don't need a mock battle. With this kind of evaluation, it's no longer meaningful."

"Really? That's great. It saves us unnecessary trouble."

At Kakyoin-san's words, the guild master laughed again and said, "Unnecessary, huh?"

"Welcome to our guild, White-ranked adventurers. I'm looking forward to your future endeavors."

He welcomed us.
