Volume 1

Chapter 24

A Carriage was Attacked

Translator : PolterGlast

Time went back a little bit, back to when Runa discovered the carriage.

[Runa's POV]

Unlike ordinary wooden carriages, this one had a high golden ratio and was clearly decorated with great care.

It's obvious that a high-ranking person is riding in it.

The only high-ranking person I know is the Gilmburg family—the hated nobles who suddenly appeared at the guild.

"Hey, look at that."

"Huh? ...Tch, don't show me such an unpleasant thing."

Judging from the reactions of the people, it's highly likely that the carriage belongs to the Gilmburg family.

I remember they came to the guild to request an escort before. I wonder if they found one?

Well, it doesn't matter now. I have to search the town for any abnormalities.

……

"..."

Could it be───

[Runa's POV]

After the carriage left the town, I kept my perception magic activated for a while, but nothing happened. Oh, what a waste of time.

Besides...nothing really happens. Am I wrong? I've rarely been wrong about these kinds of guesses...but lately, this has been happening a lot.

BOOM!!!

"!"

I was about to return to patrolling the town, but I stopped when I heard a loud explosion from outside the wall. Turning to the wall, I saw the people in the town looking in the direction of the sound, asking, "What was that!?"

I was even more curious about the guards on the wall. They were looking outside the wall and seemed to be talking about something, so I eavesdropped using an application of my perception magic.

"Hey, look at that. The noble's carriage is being attacked by bandits."

"Ha ha, serves them right. To be attacked in such a flat plain, what bad luck. The heavens have finally punished them."

"Moreover, there are quite a few strong bandits. There's no way a few guards can do anything about that. What a pity."

The soldiers continued talking as if it were a laughing matter. Since misfortune had befallen the nobles they hated, they must be feeling quite good.

But I stopped eavesdropping there.

This is disgusting.

I used wind magic to levitate, allowing me to climb over the wall and head to the scene.

It's probably a coincidence that the noble was attacked by bandits. Even if it was planned, it wouldn't harm us in any way. There's no problem if we just leave it be.

Besides, I've investigated what the Gilmburg family has done in the past—or rather, what they haven't done, and I know it's true. Certainly, it's something that is unacceptable for a noble and absolutely unforgivable.

But just because of that, to see those people being attacked and suffering misfortune, and to simply laugh at it—isn't that the same as the people we despise?

No matter where you go, humans are humans. They're so rotten.

Once I had ascended higher than the wall, I immediately flew towards the attacked carriage.

[Akana's POV]

BOOM!!!

"Kyaaa!!"

Another explosion occurred near the carriage. Since it happened closer to the carriage than the previous explosion, the carriage shook violently.

No way... to think there would be bandits so close to the wall...! And a bandit group with mages too!!

What bad luck! If it were just ordinary bandits, the guards we have now would be able to handle them, but for a bandit group of this size, it's too much...!

BOOM!!!

"Kyaaa!!"

Another explosion occurred.

"Damn it... Don't worry, Lady Akana. We will deliver you safely to the royal capital even at the cost of our lives."

"......"

One of the guards riding in the carriage with me said that to reassure me.

'Even at the cost of our lives'

Don't... Don't say that...! I'm not worth that much yet!!

I haven't done anything yet...! I haven't been able to clear my family's name or make amends to the people of the territory yet...

"I don't want to die... but I don't want the guards to die either!!"

What should I do? What should I do... what should I do!!

BOOM!!!

"Kyaaa!!"

Another explosion.

"Hyahaha!!!! So this is the level of a noble's guard!? You are not even worthy of our opponent, the [Silver Narukami]!!"

"Boss! There's a noble's daughter in the carriage, right? Before you take her alive and make her a slave, give her to us!"

"Tch, fine. Just don't injure her body."

"Roger that! Well, I'll get her dirty though."

"───!"

What... Such information is leaking!? How... Why!? Did someone leak information to the bandits? Who? How? Why?

Come to think of it, it's strange that bandits would attack in a place like this. Near the wall where soldiers are on guard—normally, bandits wouldn't attack out of fear of the soldiers.

Yet this bandit group attacked. As if they knew beforehand that the soldiers wouldn't come to the rescue.

...So, is there really a traitor? Among my close associates? Why... why... why...? Because everyone was with me, I was able to move forward like this... I thought that I would work hard so that everyone's lives could be better...

Even though I believed in them so much!!

The moment I realized that, I closed my eyes tightly, covered my ears with my hands, and crouched down, tears streaming from my eyes.

"You're getting a little carried away."

That's when I heard that voice.
