Volume 1
Chapter 13
I Met the
Guild Leader
Translator : PolterGlast
【Runa's POV】
"Alright. Next
please!"
After waiting in line
for a few minutes, it was our turn.
The woman sitting at
the counter greeted me with a brilliant sales smile.
She has black hair, a
little long... maybe a semi-long bob. Her hair is braided in the back. She has
a cheerful atmosphere and seems like the type of person anyone would trust.
However, this type of
person tends to be vulnerable against unexpected events.
The receptionist
turned to me with a smile.
"Then, please
present your guild card."
"..."
Of course, we need
something like that. I don't know exactly what a guild card is, but it's
probably like an ID card. It's necessary at a place like this, of course. It
would be terrible if someone brought in something suspicious and caused trouble
with other organizations.
But I came here before
getting that guild card issued. Because I don't have the money to issue it.
"I'm sorry, I
don't have a guild card."
"Then, please go
to the other reception desk to issue a guild card."
"That's
impossible too. Because I don't have any money."
The receptionist's
brilliant smile distorted slightly.
"Uh, um..."
"I think I
understand what you're trying to say. But before that, please look at this.
Kushina."
"Yes."
As I reached out my
hand, Kushina handed me the three drawstring bags he was holding.
I took them and placed
them in front of the receptionist.
"Um, what is
this...?"
"Look
inside."
"Ah,
alright..."
The receptionist
carefully opened the drawstring bags. And when she saw what was inside, her
eyes widened in surprise.
"T-This
is...!"
Well. Apparently, the
shells of those insects were worth something, as I expected.
With this, I can
negotiate.
"Did you see
it?"
"Uh, yes. But...
eh!?"
"The reason we
came here first is because we don't have the money to even issue a guild card.
But as you can see, I have the materials to make money here. So, can you be
flexible?"
"E-Eh!?
………Eeh!?"
She's quite confused.
I didn't expect her to be so easily swayed. ...Is this shell really that
valuable?
I originally thought
the insect's shell was worth something. I figured it would be quite useful
because it was light and hard.
Besides, the insect
itself was incredibly strong. So, I thought the danger level would be among the
highest in this world...
Well, whatever. The
more advantageous the negotiation is for me, the better. I'll push through with
this.
"If you just turn
a blind eye for a moment, the guild can get this material, and I can get the
money to issue a guild card. There's no reason to hesitate. We're going to
issue the guild card anyway. It's just a matter of before and after."
"Uuh..."
"Please, I beg
you. Will you exchange it?"
"Uuh..."
"I'll show you
the card properly once it's issued. The order might be a little different, but
you can also verify the card, so there's no problem, right?"
"Uuh..."
"Or, would you
rather have someone watch me issue the guild card properly? I won't run away or
hide. Would you prefer that way?"
"Ah,
ahhh..."
"So, what do you
say? Will you do it or not? Decide quickly───"
"I'll call the
guild master!!"
Cutting off my words
abruptly, the receptionist stood up quickly and ran off to the back.
Oops... It went too
well, and I pushed her too hard. What a mistake I made.
I grimaced and gritted
my teeth.
Surely, the head of
this guild has a lot of experience, right? Or rather, because of that, it's not
strange for someone to have a rigid and inflexible way of thinking. It's
impossible to reason with someone like that... I don't have enough cards on my
side.
Ah... I guess I'll
have to back down gracefully this time.
And then, after a
while.
"Oi, what's going
on, Wick? I'm busy right now───"
"Just come with
me, please! I can't handle this by myself!!"
The receptionist
brought a man who must be the guild master.
He had his slightly
bleached blond hair cropped and had a deep cut from his left eye to his cheek.
He had well-developed muscles, and the guild's long-sleeved and long-pants
uniform was tightly stretched and looked a bit tight on him.
The man sat in the
chair that the receptionist had been sitting in until just now.
"Ha~a... Sorry to
keep you waiting. I'm the guild master, Stogg. So, is this the material you
brought in?"
The guild master
pointed at the drawstring bag on the desk.
"Yes, that's
correct. Can you check the contents?"
"...Fine. I'll at
least check it out."
The guild master
reluctantly opened the drawstring bag and took out some of the contents.
"───!? Wha, this
is!!"
The guild master stood
up from his seat suddenly, making a loud noise.
"A-Are you sure
want to exchange this? This? Are you insane?"
The guild master
looked at me with an expression that said, "I can't believe it." Even
the guild master reacted like this... How precious was this bug?
But luckily, this is
good. At this rate, I might still be able to make it.
"Of course. But
unfortunately, I don't have a guild card. And I don't have any money on me
right now, so I was wondering if we could..."
"Oi, Wick!! Why
don't you exchange it right away!! What are you dawdling about!!!!"
"Eh, eeeh!?"
"Don't give me
that "Eh, eeeh!?" crap!! Exchange it right away!!"
………。
Oh, it worked out
quite easily... Wait. Maybe I did something really wasteful? No, but as long as
Kushina is here, we can hunt bugs like that anytime we want to... Well,
whatever.
The guild master
yelled, and the receptionist named Wick was busy exchanging the shells with
tears in her eyes.
After finishing his
yelling, the guild master turned to me again and bowed.
"...I'm sorry, we
showed you something embarrassing."
"N-No, it's okay,
don't worry about it."
"I see. Glad to
hear that."
The guild master
looked up and looked directly into my eyes.
"By the way, I
have one question. Is that okay?"
"Yes, what is
it?"
"How did you get
this?"
The weary atmosphere
he had before disappeared, and he straightened his posture, exuding an
atmosphere that was truly that of a guild master.
Apparently, that bug
was pretty bad by the standards of people in this world.
The guild master
looked at us suspiciously, holding the shells of such a bug.
"Well, we just
defeated it normally?"
"You did?"
"Not me. This guy
over here."
I pointed my right
thumb at Kushina.
"Hou, that guy.
...He doesn't look strong to me, though."
It seems the guild
master has already decided that we're suspicious. Making the receptionist leave
early and having himself, who is confident in his abilities, deal with
suspicious people—he's truly a guild master.
But now that we've
come this far, it's my turf, guild master.
"Hey, guild
master."
"Yes?"
"Are you
suspicious of us?"
"..."
"Well, it's
natural. Someone shows up out of the blue, without a guild card, and suddenly
brings something valuable and suddenly asking to exchange it. It's hard not to
be suspicious."
"..."
"But, guild
master, think about it."
With a deeper smile, I
turned to the guild master who remained silent.
"Which would
bring you more profit, finding out our identities or the insect shells we
brought?"
"───!"
The guild master raised
an eyebrow at my words.
"Certainly, if
you are unsure of who we are, you are afraid of what will happen later on. You
might get involved in some kind of trouble, or some strange organization might
come after you—those concerns are certainly reasonable. But even considering
that, wouldn't the profit that would come from obtaining those be higher?"
I already know. Those
shells were worth enough to surprise the receptionist, Wick, and this guild
master the moment they saw them. Such things are about to fall into the hands
of an organization. If you were the kind of person who would easily let that
slip away, you wouldn't be sitting in the guild master's chair in the first
place. In other words───
The guild master will
definitely accept my offer.
After a moment of
silence, the guild master raised his hands as if giving up.
"………I give up.
Well, you look young, but you're surprisingly composed. Just who the heck are
you, young lady?"
"Fufu, that's a
promise you won't ask, guild master."
"What kind of
promise is that, gosh..."
The guild master
scratched his head with his right hand.
"Well, anyway,
this is a special case. I'm going to personally monitor you until you register
as a guild member. Is that okay?"
"Yes, I don't
mind. We really intended to register to earn more money in the future."
When I smiled like
that, the guild master also smiled and said, "Oh dear."
"Okay, rookie.
Welcome to our guild."
"Yes, thank you,
guild master. I look forward to working with you."
I shook hands with the
guild master.
