[WN] A Hero From a Remote Village : Chapter 23

Chapter 23

The Apology

Translator : PolterGlast

The next morning.

Having had a drink for the first time in a while yesterday, I was able to greet the morning feeling very refreshed.

Bathing in the morning sun to get myself psyched up, I finished my daily training.

After washing off the sweat in the shared shower, I decided to go pick up Ginia again today.

I arrived at the tavern where Ginia was staying, and she was waiting outside again today.

She really doesn't need to wait outside; she could just come out when I arrive.

"Morning, Ginia. You were waiting outside again today?"

"I got all restless and ended up waiting outside! After all, if we complete a quest today, we can finally have our celebratory dinner! It's the kind of thing that gets you all fired up!"

She made a victory pose, showing me with her whole body that she was full of motivation.

It's good that she's so enthusiastic, but I wish she'd lower her voice a little since she's attracting attention.

"Well then, shall we go to the Adventurer's Guild? Let's have the receptionist pick out a quest for us again today."

"Let's! I wonder what kind of quest it will be today? I didn't get to hunt the Sword Hawk, so I hope it's a monster that I can hunt this time!"

"Well, you hunted pretty much all the monsters on the way, so I don't think you need to worry about it that much."

"But I still want to try hunting the monster from the quest! The Sword Hawk was different from the monsters I hunted."

"I don't think it was that different, aside from the fact that it could fly."

We arrived at the Adventurer's Guild while making idle chatter and immediately headed for our usual counter.

By the way, there were a decent number of people today, but unlike two days ago, we weren't being teased.

When I listened closely, most of the adventurers were talking about the [Unbearable God Cult], and it seemed the reason we weren't being made fun of was because a bigger topic of conversation had come along.

I'm grateful for Ginia's sake, but there's also a part of me that feels a little sad to be forgotten so quickly.

"Graham-san, Ginia-san! I am so sorry about yesterday!"

As I stood at the counter, nursing these strange feelings, the very first thing our usual receptionist said was an apology.

I had no idea what she was talking about, to the point I thought she might have mistaken us for someone else... but she definitely said my name and Ginia's.

"What exactly are you apologizing for? I have no memory of anything."

"Actually, it seems the [Unbearable God Cult] had set up a base in the northern mountainous region as well! I sent the two of you on a quest to such a dangerous place... I'm truly sorry!"

"Oh, so that's what you're apologizing for! You don't have to worry about it! Graham-san took care of them in a—"

Getting carried away by the receptionist's apology, Ginia started to blurt out unnecessary information, so I immediately covered her mouth.

The fact that we encountered the [Unbearable God Cult] is something we absolutely cannot tell anyone.

Not only did we help a group of evil bandits, but we let them go and didn't even report it.

If this gets out, in the worst-case scenario, we could even be kicked out of the adventurer business.

"W-we heard the rumors. But we didn't run into them, and in any case, it's not something you need to apologize for. The information said there was a sighting in the south, so it's only natural to recommend the furthest direction, which was the north. It was just a coincidence that they happened to be in the north as well; something like that is impossible to prevent."

"B-but..."

"Please, don't apologize. You've helped us so much up to this point, it pains me to have you apologize for something like this."

"...I understand. Thank you for your kind words. I'll pull myself together and make sure to support you properly!"

"Yeah, I'm counting on you."

I was glad to see her usual smile, like a blooming flower.

Just the fact that she's thinking so seriously about a rookie geezer like me is more than enough. Even if this receptionist were to make a mistake that put my life at risk, I have no intention of blaming her at all.

She's already helped me that much.

"Well then, what kind of quest will you be taking today? The matter of the [Unbearable God Cult] has already been resolved by other adventurers, so today, you can go in any direction: east, west, south, or north!"

"In that case, I'd like to take a quest in either the east or west, since we haven't been there yet. Could you find a subjugation quest that we can handle? It would be great if the reward was around five silver coins."

"Understood. I'll look for a subjugation quest in the east or west worth about five silver coins."

The receptionist responded to my vague request with a smile.

While she was in the backroom, I gave Ginia a light warning about what happened earlier. As for the quest, I can probably leave it to the receptionist without any worries.

[WN] A Hero From a Remote Village : Interlude 2

Interlude 2

Tavern Rumors, Part 2

Translator : PolterGlast

"Hey, have you heard the story about the rookie adventurer geezer completing quests without a single failure so far! At this rate, he might even reach F-rank!"

"Dude... your news is way too old. No one's following the rookie geezer anymore. Not when the [Unbearable God Cult] has shown up near this town!"

In the usual tavern, as always, the hottest topics of the day were being discussed in every corner.

Today's number one topic was the [Unbearable God Cult], for which there had been a recent sighting, and the majority of the adventurers gathered in this tavern had been out on the subjugation mission for them.

"I just got back from the expedition, so I only know bits and pieces about the [Unbearable God Cult]! Is the topic of the old rookie already over!"

"Of course it is. Subjugating them is worth an exceptional thirty platinum coins. Today, all adventurers E-rank and above were out searching frantically for the [Unbearable God Cult]."

"It's not really my place to say since I didn't go on the search... what's the deal with no one seeing anything despite there being a sighting? Well, I guess it was a special quest this time, so it's good that everyone got a certain amount of pay even without any results!"

This was the content of the conversations at every table.

While there were quite a few voices of complaint, everyone received a fixed reward, so even though they all secretly thought it was a fake lead, there wasn't any major criticism.

"Well, I'm sure the majority of people think it was a fake lead. I went to the location of the sighting myself, and there wasn't even a trace that people had been there."

"What! So the story about the [Unbearable God Cult] showing up was a fake!? Well, they're based in the royal capital, so I don't see why they'd bother coming all the way to Biodasdal anyway!"

"...No, the sighting reported to the Adventurer's Guild was fake, but apparently, the [Unbearable God Cult] really was hiding near this town."

The place was rowdy and noisy, but everyone was sensitive to new information, and the moment something unknown was mentioned, the inside of the tavern grew quiet, as usual.

This was a regular occurrence in this tavern, and no one made a fuss anymore even if they were being blatantly eavesdropped on.

"Hey! You've got new info again! You had info about the rookie adventurer geezer the other day, too!"

"Just between us, I can't forget that feeling of everyone hanging on my every word the other day. The moment the special quest for the [Unbearable God Cult] was issued, I used an informant to investigate beforehand."

"What the hell! Just for that, did you actually pay out of your own pocket for information? I'm honestly a little creeped out."

"Of course I did. But thanks to that, I have some solid information that no one else knows. Don't you want to hear it?"

"Well... of course I want to know! Just get on with it and tell me what's going on!"

Hearing this exchange, everyone in the tavern turned their ears towards this table.

The information was highly credible, and it was brand new, not yet known to the public.

There wasn't a single person in this tavern who didn't want to know.

"Actually, the story is that the [Unbearable God Cult] was hiding in the north, not the south."

"The north? You mean that mountainous region?"

"That's right, the northern mountainous region. And there was an adventurer who had been aiming for that mountainous region from the very beginning. An adventurer you know well."

"An adventurer I know well who went to the mountainous region? Don't tell me... it's the rookie adventurer geezer?"

"No way, you idiot. --It's the B-rank adventurer, Aoi."

"When you say the B-rank adventurer Aoi, you mean that Aoi, the one who works solo?"

"That's right. She's an oddball who's always been a solo adventurer, but her skills are the real deal. She's a solo B-rank, so they say she's a prodigy who could easily reach A-rank if she were in a party."

There wasn't a single person who worked as an adventurer in Biodasdal who didn't know the name Aoi. At the mention of this unexpected name, the place instantly began to buzz.

"You're saying Aoi predicted that the [Unbearable God Cult] would be in the north!?"

"That's right. And apparently, it's been reported that she actually engaged them in combat."

"Is that for real, not just some baseless rumor? I don't get it!"

"She couldn't capture them, but she apparently drove them away. I heard she actually brought back a tent that the [Unbearable God Cult] was using."

"So she drove off the [Unbearable God Cult] all by herself? That's insane! Isn't this... the birth of a new hero?"

"It seems it wasn't officially accepted for some reason, so she's still stuck at B-rank, though."

"That doesn't matter! I knew she was an eccentric, but when a story like this comes out, even her eccentricity starts to look cool!"

Adventurers tend not to like other adventurers.

However, they love an extraordinary tale, and they get very excited and build it up.

The achievement Aoi left behind this time certainly fit the bill of an "extraordinary tale," and this rumor, spread by the adventurers who eavesdropped in the tavern, would quickly propagate and become the talk of the entire town of Biodasdal...

But no one in the tavern at the time could have imagined that Aoi, the center of all the commotion, would get even more tangled up in trouble by associating with the "rookie adventurer geezer" who was a bizarre eccentric—the most eccentric of all.

[WN] A Hero From a Remote Village : Chapter 22

Chapter 22

A Small Moment of Bliss

Translator : PolterGlast

After helping the grunts of the [Unbearable God Cult], we were able to find a Sword Hawk on our way back and successfully hunt it.

As for the beak, which I had hoped would be a good weapon material, it was honestly a complete disappointment.

It was just a beak with a sharp tip, and it was so soft that it could be cooked and eaten, let alone be made into a weapon.

I was disappointed because of my high hopes, but we were able to hunt it easily, and the quest was completed without a hitch.

This meant we had earned five silver coins, more than double what we earned yesterday.

In high spirits, we went straight to the Adventurer's Guild, delivered the Sword Hawk's corpse, and successfully received our five silver coins.

"We did it! That's two quests completed in two days! And we got five silver coins!"

"Five silver coins is a lot. We still can't have a celebratory dinner, but two silver and five copper coins each is a good haul."

"It's all thanks to you, Graham-san! If we can complete another quest tomorrow, let's have that celebratory dinner for sure!"

"Yeah. If we can earn another five silver coins tomorrow, I think we can have a modest celebration."

"Fufufu, I'm already looking forward to it! The quests are fun, and it's such a change that I can't believe I was on the verge of death just two days ago!"

"It's the same for me. The first person I met after coming to this town was the receptionist. And I was truly lucky that she introduced me to you, Ginia. Thank you for being so kind to an old geezer like me."

"I'm the one who should be thanking you!! You've helped me with every single thing! I'm counting on you again tomorrow!"

I parted ways with Ginia in front of the Adventurer's Guild and strode through the streets of Biodasdal in a good mood.

Even after spending six copper coins for a one-night stay, I still have one silver and nine copper coins left.

I'll set aside one silver coin for the celebratory dinner tomorrow... which means I can use nine copper coins.

I've been living frugally since I left the village, but now I have a little bit of breathing room.

Now, what should I do with nine copper coins?

To be honest, I want things like clothes and underwear, but I can't afford such luxuries right now.

The only luxury I can afford with nine copper coins is to make my dinner a little more lavish.

Yesterday's meal was too simple, just rock-hard bread with a Great Lemon in between.

I already have my eye on a dish I want to try from when I walked through the food stall district yesterday.

Before I head back to the inn, I'll stop by the food stall district and buy my dinner.

I bought the food I had my eye on in the food stall district and returned to my cheap inn.

What I bought this time was... ikameshi, a well-seasoned squid stuffed with rice; a stew with various ingredients simmered together; a pork skewer that I hadn't planned on buying but was lured in by its incredibly delicious smell; and—a small cup of cheap alcohol.

I've finally gotten my hands on alcohol.

I've loved alcohol since my days in Furo Village, but after leaving, I had to endure a life without it.

When I stayed at the tavern, the smell of alcohol wafting through the air was the hardest thing to bear.

But my patience paid off, and I was finally able to get some alcohol with my own hands.

I enter my room, and glad that no one is watching, I rub my cheek against the cup of alcohol before taking the first sip.

Aaaah, this is the best!

Savoring the feeling of my body warming up slightly, I bite into the meat skewer I was lured into buying by its smell.

Then I immediately wash it down with more alcohol, and next, I devour the ikameshi I've been eyeing since yesterday.

The room may be a wreck, but the reality is that I'm able to eat a delicious meal in a place where I can relax like this.

I wondered what would become of me when I left the village without any plans, but so far, I'm having fun and have even found enough work to be able to drink.

It's a shame that I'm not in my best condition because of my arm, but thanks to the receptionist and Ginia, I'm managing somehow.

I've only been on the receiving end of kindness so far, and I still haven't fulfilled the promise I made to the old woman I met in the village on my way here.

Once I have a little more stability in my own life, maybe I can start helping people to fulfill that promise.

For now, my activities as an adventurer come first, for Ginia's sake and for my own, but I spent a moment of happiness eating delicious food and drinking cheap alcohol, dreaming of a day in the near future when I could do such things.
