Chapter 7
One Step
Translator : PolterGlast
The man's physique was
quite large. He was probably over two meters tall.
His head was
completely bald, and a large scar ran from his head to his cheek, accentuating
his intimidating appearance.
He carried a rugged
greatsword on his back, and his leather armor had a unique sheen that only
well-worn leather products have.
He was probably a
veteran adventurer.
Although I had some
concerns about his attitude, I should still respect my seniors.
"Yes, I came to
the capital to become an adventurer."
"--Ha, you better
don't! You're probably just a kid from the countryside with big dreams, but
there's no way a skinny kid like you can be an adventurer!"
The veteran adventurer
smacked me on the shoulder.
He put so much force
into it that I thought I was going to get a bruise, and I couldn't help but
grimace.
I brushed his hand
away and activated the LV 2 light magic Heal through my clothes.
The gently glowing
light gradually relieved the pain in my shoulder.
I took a deep breath
and slowly raised my face.
I had already given up
on the idea of respecting the other party.
"...I'm not a
kid, I'm already sixteen."
My motto is, "Be
kind to those who are kind to you."
If you're going to be
rough, I'll be rough too.
Of course, I don't intend
to fight him here and now.
I was wondering what
to do, but... adventurers who do rough work must value their reputation and
trust above all else.
In other words, if I'm
going to make it as an adventurer, I can't let my fellow adventurers look down on
me.
I need to make a point
here.
"Lightning."
Thanks to the many
times I've tried it against monsters before coming here, I can now control LV 1
magic to some extent.
I activated the LV 1
lightning magic, Lightning, with the minimum magic power I could muster, and
circulated a weak lightning around my finger.
How about that, baldy?
If he sees this, there
will be a "W-what?! You're a wizard?!" kind of development, and I'll
be able to get out of this situation...
"Hey, is that...
light magic?!"
"...? No, it's
not. I just used light magic a moment ago. This is lightning magic..."
"L-lightning
magic, you say?! And light magic too?! --Hey everyone, a crazy rookie has
appeared!!"
The bald guy who was
looking down on me a moment ago was now shouting at the top of his lungs,
attracting the attention of everyone around him.
Naturally, their eyes
were focused on me, who had lightning snaking around my finger.
"Lightning magic,
don't be ridiculous... hey, is that really...?"
"Hey, is it true
you can use light magic?! Then please join our party..."
"What are you
talking about?! Give way to us, the wizards of 'Dawn of Daybreak'!"
When I turned off the
lightning, feeling embarrassed, the adventurers around me started to gather
around me at an incredible speed.
...This amount of
attention is lethal for me, who has just graduated from being a shut-in!
(vomiting blood)
I was being stared at,
whistled at, and solicited... I was burning through my SAN (sanity) points
because I couldn't get used to the surprisingly warm atmosphere, and finally,
it was my turn.
The beautiful
receptionist bowed her head with a slightly strained smile.
"I'm sorry, the
adventurer you were talking to earlier is called Kaibiki-san. He has a strange
hobby of giving advice to aspiring adventurers..."
"Is he one of
those people who looks scary but is nice on the inside...?"
"--Eh?! Yes,
that's right! He may look scary, but he's a really nice person! If you have any
trouble as an adventurer, please feel free to ask Kaibiki-san, he'll be happy
to help!"
It seems that all my
efforts to make a point have backfired.
...What should I do,
should I go back home and regroup? (delirium)
As I was feeling
depressed with the negative thoughts typical of a shut-in, the receptionist,
who had been smiling a moment ago, tightened her facial muscles.
"Now then, once
again--welcome to the Grisnia branch of the Adventurers Guild. My name is
Melissa, the receptionist. Would you like to register as an adventurer
today?"
"Ah... yes!
P-please!"
I pulled myself
together and bowed my head.
Then, for some reason,
the adventurers who had been around me earlier applauded and welcomed me.
I thought the
atmosphere would be more cutthroat... but it seems that the atmosphere is much
more homely than I imagined.
I might be able to
manage even if I'm not very good at socializing or competing.
Grateful that I could
think that way, I took my first step towards becoming an adventurer--.
