Chapter 6
Shoulder
Translator : PolterGlast
Grisnia was what you'd
call a fortress city, with the entire city surrounded by a stone wall.
Apparently, this
design was to cope with monster attacks in case of an emergency.
Only the four gates in
the east, west, north, and south were open to the public.
Because the west and
north highways connect to other territories, those two gates always have a lot
of traffic.
These two gates were
always crowded with lines of merchants, and it was said that waits of two or
three hours were common.
By the way, the city
to the west was apparently a so-called labyrinth city, and there were dungeons
in Alistella.
Apparently, there was
also a dungeon in the royal capital.
It seemed unpopular,
perhaps because no great treasures came out of it...
...Anyway, let's get
back to the topic.
If you go east, you'll
first find a grassland, then a forest, and if you go further beyond that,
you'll reach a pioneer village that was built when the kingdom was still
successfully developing the area.
So the east gate was
basically an unpopular gate that only pharmacists and adventurers came to for
work (by the way, this is the east gate I came to).
If you go south,
you'll reach the sea.
However, aquatic
monsters were quite powerful, and so far they haven't been able to build a port
town.
Huh, why do I know so
much about this?
Well, that's
because...
"--Well, that's
the explanation of the royal capital."
"O-oh, I see...
thank you for your kindness."
That's because
Bans-san, a veteran guard with twenty years of experience as a gate guard,
taught me all about the royal capital.
I came to the east
gate.
And to avoid being
suspected of my clothes when I came, I deliberately tattered the most ragged
clothes I had at home.
Furthermore, I hadn't
talked to anyone other than my parents for a long time, so I was currently in a
state of extreme social anxiety.
All of these factors
miraculously came together... and Bans mistook me for a starry-eyed young man
who had come from a pioneer village at the risk of his life, aspiring to be an
adventurer!
Bans-san didn't seem
to be shy, and he spoke to me, who was clearly acting suspiciously, in a
friendly manner.
Thanks to him, I was
able to talk without being too nervous.
"Since you came
from a pioneer village, do you want to be an adventurer, as expected?"
"U-uh... yes. I
have to earn money, no matter how dangerous it is."
"Ugh, your youth
is dazzling..."
I smiled at Bans-san's
comical movements as he narrowed his eyes and made a shield with his hand.
I was relieved to find
that adventurers existed in this world, and decided to go along with the story
for now.
From what I heard, it
seemed that adventurers were indeed the ones who hunted monsters in this world.
I guess they're like
handymen who mainly deal with rough stuff.
They often cause
various troubles, so from Bans-san's perspective, as a guard, their existence
seemed to be a source of trouble.
"But is it okay
for you to do so much for me...?"
"It's alright,
it's alright, you should take kindness when you can get it."
When he found out that
I didn't have a single copper coin for the toll, Bans-san patted me on the
shoulder strongly and handed me a copper coin.
"Think of it as
an advance investment in a future great adventurer."
I don't think I'll
ever forget his expression as he smiled naturally.
Not only information,
but even money... thank you, Bans-san. I won't forget this favor.
If I can earn money
properly, I'd like to give him a present or something to repay his kindness.
I was touched by the
kindness of the people of Alistella, and headed for the Adventurers Guild--.
Since I didn't intend
to stay at an inn in the first place, I didn't look for one and went straight
to the Adventurers Guild.
Fortunately, the
building was in a very prominent location in Grisnia, so I was able to find it
immediately.
I opened the heavy
door and went inside.
What I found there
was... a chaotic melting pot, just like the image of adventurers.
In the back, there was
a beautiful receptionist with a friendly smile.
My improved hearing
picked up that she was apparently turning down a dinner invitation.
In the attached bar, a
man who looked like an adventurer, who had only roughly applied ointment to his
wounds as a first aid treatment, was gulping down alcohol.
I understand that they
want to let loose because it's a dangerous job where they don't know when
they'll die, but I think it's a bit too wild.
A little further away,
there was a guild staff member appraising materials, and on the board placed in
front, there were requests that could be accepted.
As the god had said, I
was able to read everything in Japanese without any problems.
Let's see, I guess I
should register as an adventurer at... that reception counter.
I decided to line up
at the end of the line where the receptionist who had turned down the dinner
invitation earlier was efficiently processing.
Then... grab!
I was suddenly grabbed
by the shoulder.
When I turned around,
there was--a large, intimidating man.
"Hey, kid, you're
not going to tell me... you're aspiring to be an adventurer, are you?"
