Chapter 41
The Capital
City of Kasei

Lotus sat next to the
coachman, and I snuggled into the straw with Ichi and the others. The carriage
had come just as I was at my wit's end, holding the exhausted slimes and
wondering what to do. Although I had stuffed the slimes into my bag, the man in
the straw hat who had come swaying along on horseback (trotting) tilted his
head and went, "Aaaah?"
We must have looked
utterly lost in a very strange place, with nothing but the sea around us and a
suspicious combination of a child and a young man. I had assumed the carriage
would just pass by, but trot, trot, trot. The horse approached. Trot, trot. It
was looking at us. Trot. It stopped. Seriously? Even though we looked so
suspicious.
"Hey, you guys
alright?"
"W-we're doing
okay-ish..."
"So you're
okay-ish but in trouble, huh?"
When he said,
"Then hop on," I stared intently at his head and then nodded,
thinking, "Well, alright." Lotus sat next to the coachman in case any
monsters showed up, and I got into the back.
Buried in the straw, I
tried to keep the completely revived Ichi and the others down while looking up
at the bright blue sky. Near the wheels of the carriage were slender cylinders,
and water dripped from them at regular intervals, leaving a trail on the road.
A "monster repellent." Even so, the man said it wasn't perfect, so it
was helpful to have a bodyguard like Lotus. I envied how strong he looked at a
glance. Up until now, I had been thinking about how I wanted to quickly become
a reliable, curvaceous bombshell.
When we got close to
the town, the coachman said, "Is this alright?" and then chuckled,
"Thanks to you, the journey was fun. We only have horses around
here," while the horse in harness snorted and trembled. Ichi and the
others, hidden in my bag, were also trembling. Please don't compete with him.
So, in this way, we
were able to recover from a pinch situation with exhausted slimes far from town
to a situation with slightly less energetic slimes near town. The reason we
asked to be dropped off not right in town, but within sight of it, was for a
strategy meeting. I would never forget the unforgettable memory of when I, who
had become a demon for the first time in Cloudy Country, tried to infiltrate a
town by disappearing and running through, only to trip and fall and get caught
by the scruff of my neck by Yozaki-san.
"I can run faster
than that now, but it's still tough..."
"What are you
talking about?"
I muttered my thoughts
involuntarily and was immediately retorted, but I decided to ignore it.
"What should we
do? Climbing the wall will be tough with 'that,' right?"
"Yeah."
I could clearly see
the protruding "roof" on the ceiling of Kasei, the central city of
Soleil, but even for Lotus, it would probably be difficult to get over. We had
a reason to enter the town. I wouldn't hesitate to give up if it was
impossible, but I wanted to make as much effort as possible.
"Well, we'll
figure something out."
As I hmmmed and
hawwed, Lotus surprisingly nodded and muttered. I frowned at him, wondering why
he was being so reckless, unlike me, and followed after him. But when we
entered the town, we were welcomed with open arms. Of course, I had concealed
my red eyes and the presence of Ichi and the others. "Welcome, travelers,
welcome, welcome." That was the gist of it.
"Welcome!"
When I saw the young
man, he reminded me of Yozaki-san. He wasn't wearing a cylindrical hat like
him, and he didn't have a spear in his hand. Instead, he held a quill pen. He
poked his head out from a small window in the brick wall and smiled cheerfully.
He was probably a gatekeeper. He wasn't guarding the gate at all, though.
"Welcome to
Kasei, the academy city! We welcome everyone, even from other countries, even
from other leaves. Are you a student planning to enroll?"
The gatekeeper, who I
realized was just constantly squinting as he smiled, spoke to us while happily
clutching his quill pen—not to me, but to Lotus.
Lotus silently looked
down at the gatekeeper. Behind him, I gripped the strap of my bag with an
indescribable feeling. What are you talking about? I pushed San's head down,
who was trying to poke his head out. Lotus, a student? That was a rather
difficult misunderstanding to comment on.
"Since you have a
sword, are you in the swordsmanship department? Or maybe majored in the magic
wall? Excellent, excellent! We welcome new residents, and you haven't been
repelled by the wall!"
The gatekeeper poured
out his words with such force that it felt like he was crushing us. Did he not
have time to interject? "No, I'm not a student," Lotus muttered
quietly, but it didn't reach the gatekeeper's ears, so Lotus repeated, "That's
why I said I'm not a student." It was a rather surreal scene.
