Chapter 43
Meanwhile, at
That Time

I leaned back in the
soft chair, sprawling out a bit. It was soft and quite comfortable. The room's
furnishings, I didn't really know, but they were probably all expensive. I had
absolutely no clue, though. After all, "I" am the Saint.
If I wasn't treated
with utmost respect, there was no point in coming to this world.
I had been at home,
playing a game, and rolling around on the sofa. Then, thump, I suddenly fell
and sank somewhere.
Into a deep, heavy,
murky tank. No waves, no sky, just sinking.
--What is this?
The scream I let out
disappeared without reaching anywhere, or at least it should have. Since even
shouting didn't work, I curled up and closed my eyes. Then, when I realized,
unfamiliar people were looking down at me. They said I was the Saint. When they
asked for my name, I should have told them, but my mouth automatically said
"Yuko."
That was the name of
the protagonist in the game I had been playing just now.
"So, you are Lady
Yuko. As expected, your esteemed name truly embodies your being."
"No, that's not
right, my name is... Yuko! Huh? Yuko, Yuko, Yu-u-ko!"
I couldn't say it. The
uniform I was wearing was also unfamiliar. When I rummaged through the black
bag I somehow held in one hand, I found a student ID card. It clearly had the
name "Yuko" written on it. No last name. Seriously, why? "...And
that small book in your hand, what might it be?" A man peered into my
hand. A handsome guy was close. I created a little distance and first checked
it myself. The attached photo was definitely me.
What is this?
While confused by the
strangeness, my heart fluttered at the handsome man looking at me. I asked
about the world and its system. And then I understood. This was the world of
the game. The otome game I had been playing just moments ago. I couldn't
believe it at first. But the reality that I couldn't even say my own name, the
cityscape I looked down at, and the same color of the sky as in the game, all
unmistakably told me it was true.
I understood, I accepted
it. And in the assigned room, I waited for the story to unfold. The reason I
could only say "Yuko" was probably because I was the type to play
with the default name. I regretted not entering my real name, but it was too
late now. This was probably the tutorial. The story wasn't progressing much
yet. I wanted to freely explore the town soon. Otome games were troublesome and
inflexible when they became reality.
I was summoned by the
high-ranking members of the church. I knew this because it was just like in the
game. Among the people who looked like Westerners, there were, of course,
handsome men. I gazed at their elaborate graphics, thinking they would serve
me, but all that came were guys who were far from my ideal. A sigh escaped my
lips.
The Saint was a
treasure of this world. Any country could perform the summoning ritual, but you
never knew where she would appear. Therefore, no matter where she came, there
was an agreement that she shouldn't be monopolized but shared amicably by
everyone. That's why I could easily go to any country, and traveling was a
breeze. It was the real thrill of this game.
"...Status,
confirm."
Pikori, the status
screen appeared before my eyes.
"...Boring."
In the game, the
tutorial should have ended quickly, but now I was being taught about the world
at length, and the lessons on manners for traveling to other countries were
endlessly long. My skills weren't increasing at all. In the game, achievements
were unlocked when the first companion joined the party, but since the story
wasn't progressing, those weren't being unlocked either.
A limited-time Saint
summoning. All I had to do was pray. After that, I could easily fall in love
with handsome men, kick the enemies around, and have fun. It was inconvenient
that my name was different, but so far, that was the only downside. And yet.
"...Isn't this
weird?"
If this were a game, I
could just select "next day" and click, and the screen would darken,
a nice background music would play, my HP and MP would recover, and the story
would progress. But doing this manually was unbearable. "Ugh, come
on!" I was tired of leaning back in the chair in the room, so I tried
collapsing onto the bed this time. It was only the afternoon of the second day
since I was summoned. The thought of this continuing forever was endlessly
troublesome. "I can't take it anymore, skip, skip!" I grabbed the
bell installed by the bed and shook it vigorously. Chirichiri, it rang.
"Was there
something you need?" A maid, who had arrived quickly yet gracefully, asked.
I shouted at her.
"Bring me someone
important!"
"...H-huh,
um..."
"Just bring me
someone important! Anyone will do!"
The maid's slow
understanding of my bewildered gaze was infuriating. Annoyed, I just yelled
what I felt.
"This is 'Cloudy
Country,' right!? It's so damn annoying! I'll beat up any enemy or whatever, so
bring me a handsome guy! I was only able to do my best because I knew I had a
good-looking guy with me, so hurry up and bring Lotus to me!"
