Episode 116: Humpty Dumpty Can't Be Put Back Together Again

Starting December 1st, the Adventurers' Cooperative (Guild) and the Self-Defense Forces will jointly undertake the conquest A-rank dungeon.

Therefore, we are now recruiting personnel to participate in this conquest.

The qualifications for participation are possession of a Three-Star license individually, or teams and individuals with Four Stars or higher.

Participants will be loaned one C-rank card and five D-rank cards for Three-Star individuals, and one B-rank card for Four-Star or higher individuals/teams.

 The reward is—

"————the loaned cards will be given at the end of the operation, regardless of whether it's cleared or not, it said."

Anna read aloud the quest notification from the Guild, then gave a soft snort at the end and looked around at our faces.

"The answer seems pretty obvious, but I'll ask just in case. As the Adventurers' Club, what do you think we should do about this quest?"

The next day, early in the morning.

We had gathered in the club room before class to discuss the quest from the Guild that arrived last night.

"I'll say this upfront... regardless of the Adventurers' Club's conclusion, I intend to participate in this."

It was Teacher who answered Anna's question first.

At Teacher's declaration of participation, Anna's eyebrow twitched almost imperceptibly for a moment, but she said nothing and waited for him to continue.

"The temporary departure I mentioned before... this is it. Sorry, but no matter what conclusion the Adventurers' Club comes to, I'll be participating."

"Ah... so this was the absolutely unavoidable business after all."

 Anna nodded, as if understanding.

"Understood. It's as I heard beforehand, so it's fine for Kannadzuki-senpai to participate in the quest. ...I'll ask just in case, but you will be coming back, right?"

"That's the plan. ...That is, if there's still a place for me when I do."

"Oh my, you suddenly sound like you've lost all trust in us. Don't worry, it'll still be here for you."

"Yeah. Thank you."

On the surface, the exchange appeared tranquil, but there was an underlying chill to it.

The warm friendship and trust that had certainly been there until yesterday had vanished, and the relationship between the two had become a business-like one.

As I sighed inwardly, Anna turned her gaze to Oribe next.

"What about you, Sayo?"

Anna asked, adding a question mark to her tone, but not seeming to doubt Oribe's answer in the slightest.

Oribe fell silent for a moment, as if struggling, and then replied,

"...I, want to participate."

Anna made a face that clearly said, "Huh?"

"Sayo, have you gone mad? This request, no matter how you look at it, is clearly intending to use adventurers as cannon fodder to clear the way to the deepest floors. 'Clearing the way' might sound nice, but it's just being a meat shield to conserve the military's strength. Sure, someone like Kannadzuki-senpai, with a Four-Star license and connections in the Self-Defense Forces, would probably be treated well, but people like me and Sayo would just be used up and discarded."

…Teacher gave a wry smile at Anna's bluntness, but didn't seem to have any particular objection.

In fact, this request smells quite fishy.

Why would they recruit adventurers for an A-rank dungeon that the Self-Defense Forces usually conquer on their own?

At the very least, they probably won't treat adventurers well or give them opportunities to shine.

Teacher is participating probably because it involves his older sister, a former SDF member.

Since they are recruiting adventurers, of course they must also be recruiting reserve Self-Defense Force personnel.

"...E-even so, if there's a possibility I can stop Angolmois, I want to participate. If there's a possibility of protecting this everyday life..."

"S-Sayo..."

Oribe's words, which were spoken with tears welling in her eyes and a slight tremor in her voice, left Anna speechless.

Upon closer inspection, though hidden by makeup, there were dark circles under Oribe's eyes.

This must have been a conclusion she reached after agonizing over it all night.

It was then that I realized for the first time that she was under considerable pressure.

I knew Oribe was a rather conservative person, so the thought that Angolmois might destroy her familiar everyday life must have been incredibly stressful for her.

Thinking back, it seems her usual talkativeness had decreased significantly since Kudan's prophecy.

Seeing her pitiful best friend in such a state, Anna took her hand and spoke to her earnestly, as if pleading,

"Sayo, calm down... okay? It's not like it's guaranteed that conquering an A-rank dungeon will stop Angolmois, right? It's just that it's the first dungeon that appeared and hasn't been cleared yet, so people think the key might be there, but there's no real proof, you know?"

"Th- that's... true, but still... "

Anna nodded once at Oribe, who was unusually weak and her gaze was wandering, and then said,

"Then, let's do it this way. How about we decide by majority vote?"

"Majority vote...?"

"That's right. Sayo is in favor of participating, and I'm against it. Excluding Kannadzuki-senpai, who said he'd participate regardless, there's one floating vote. How about we decide based on your choice, Senpai?"

M-me...?

"If Senpai says you want to participate, then I'll also participate with everyone in the Adventurers' Club. So, if Senpai doesn't want to participate... will you give up on it too, Sayo?"

"... In that case..."

The eyes of all three of them focused on me.

The decision had been left to me.

Somehow, I've ended up in a position where I felt strangely pressured... but my answer was already decided.

"————I, have no intention of participating."

In that instant, it felt like something had been definitively decided.

It was a sensation similar to when I used Fate Manipulation...

However, this wasn't something manipulated by anyone; it was undoubtedly the result of my own choice.

This choice may not have had any impact on the world, but it was surely an extremely important one for my life...

Just like when I decided to become an adventurer, to draw the million-yen card pack, or when I decided to use Amrita on Renge… this was one of those choices that would determine the course of my life.

 I somehow understood that.

At my answer, Anna nodded with satisfaction, and Oribe hung her head.

then Teacher... looked straight at me and asked,

"Would you mind, telling me your reason?"

"...My family. If Angolmois happens while I'm inside the A-rank dungeon, and because of that, I can't get to my family and friends in time when they're in danger... I wouldn't be able to bear it. I can't risk that for a hope that might not even exist. That's the reason."

"...I see, family."

Teacher sighed softly, then gave a wry smile.

"Then there's no helping it."

"Yeah..."

At that moment, Anna, wearing a smile, clapped her hands together sharply.

"Then, it's settled. Sayo, you're okay with that too, right?"

"......Mm. I don't intend to throw a tantrum now. The importance of family... I understand that as well."

Oribe, her usual tone returning, smiled faintly.

"Honestly, there's a part of me that's a little relieved too."

"You're saying something so out of character~"

"I can’t argue. You're right, Anna."

As a relaxed atmosphere settled in, the pre-class chime rang.

"Ah ah, is it already this time? Well then, see you all after school."

With that, everyone left the club room to head to their respective classrooms, but I was stopped by Teacher,

"Maro, can you hang back with me for a bit?"

Anna stopped dead in her tracks and turned around.

Oribe, following suit, also turned back.

Anna watched us with a blank expression, while Oribe looked at us anxiously.

I gestured for them to go ahead with a wave of my hand, and once they were out of sight, I turned to Teacher and asked,

"So, what is it?"

"Not here."

"...Okay."

 I quietly followed after Teacher.

We went down the stairs, descended to the first floor, changed our shoes at the entrance hall, and eventually exited the school gates.

Just where are we going...?

I wanted to ask, but I held back, silently following him until we arrived at the nearby Dungeon Mart.

...It's unlikely he has business at the convenience store part. If that were the case, we could have just gone to the rooftop. He must have business with the dungeon itself.

But this dungeon is F-rank. What business do we have in an F-rank dungeon now?

"I want to rush straight to the lowest floor, is that okay?"

"Sure, but... does it have to be the lowest floor?"

"Yeah."

I checked just in case, but it didn't seem like there were any Irregular Encounters.

...A bad feeling was swelling up inside me. A premonition that something was going to end.

Should I just turn on my heel and go home?

While thinking such things, I summoned Yuki and Eliza and rushed to the bottom floor with Teacher.

This dungeon seemed to be quite small, with only about three floors, and we arrived at the lowest floor in no time.

After quickly dealing with the Boss, a Hellhound, Teacher returned all his cards.

At the same time, I returned Yuki and Eliza as well. ...However, just in case, I had Renge hide herself and stay nearby.

When it looked like it was just the two of us, I asked Teacher,

"So, what's this all about? Bringing me all the way to a place like this."

"Right. I'm going straight to the point. I want you to join me in conquering the A-rank dungeon."

I knew it was going to be something like that. I sighed and replied,

"As for that, I thought we already reached a conclusion earlier?"

"You don't have to worry about your family. A platoon from the Self-Defense Forces will be escorting them."

"...Huh?"

What are you talking about?

Why would the Self-Defense Forces protect my family? You don’t have that kind of authority, Teacher, and besides, using an entire platoon of the Self-Defense Forces just to drag one adventurer is completely counterproductive.

I asked back, half laughing at the ridiculousness of it all,

"Why are you going so far to make me participate? Is it because I won the race?”

"It’s because you made a dungeon disappear."

“.........................”

Ah… so that’s how it is after all...

There was no anger. Only disappointment spread quietly in my heart.

"Sorry, but you’ve got the wrong idea. That wasn't me, and I don't know the reason why it happened."

"That's just because you've forgotten. Or rather, I should say your memoried have been tampered with."

"Tampered with...?"

"That's right. Maro, you probably had your memory altered as a penalty for erasing a dungeon through irregular means."

".................."

"Shall we delve a little deeper? Yuki-chan, was it? That Lycanthrope seems to have some rather unusual skills, doesn’t she?"

"Huh?!"

 My eyes widened in shock.

“[The True One], [Breakthrough of Limits], [True Follower Summoning]... I’ve never heard of skills like that. How did you get your hands on such cards?”

"......You, who are you?"

Unable to bear it any longer, I finally asked the question.

The crucial question I’d been suppressing for the past few months...

"You probably already have an idea, don’t you?”

"...So you are a spy from the government after all."

My teacher smiled wryly upon my words.

“It’s not as cool as being a spy, more like just an investigator, I suppose… Judging by your tone, it seems you’ve suspected for quite some time now.”

“Well, yeah. The timing was just too perfect."

Bringing us a capture quest right when we were investigating the Hound Master, and then transferring schools after the incident... it would be strange not to suspect something.

But I always suppressed those doubts until now because I wanted to believe that he was a comrade.

A true comrade with no hidden agendas.

I don't know what Anna and Oribe thought… but at least that’s how I felt.

Because Teacher—Kannadzuki—was the first adventurer I truly respected, and my mentor...

“...... Well, yeah, you’d obviously notice. I did say they should have been more careful with the timing and everything,"

Kannadzuki said, still with a wry smile. I scratched my head roughly and said,

"So, did you find anything out about me by investigating?"

"Mm, quite a few things. You possess a 'Luck Manipulation' card, of which there are only a few confirmed cases domestically, and you've also noticed the effects of Garnet. And more than anything, you've unlocked your card's protection and fully unleashed its power..."

"Tch, so you noticed me too, huh?"

Renge, who had been listening silently until now, revealed herself as if to shield me.

“What’re we gonna do? Looks like everything has been exposed."

"Yeah..."

Damn it... being laid bare like this…

So I was completely in the palm of his hand, huh.

"Just asking, but how did you find out? Some kind of mind-reading magic item?"

"No, mind-reading magic items aren’t authorized for someone like me. That’s a double-edged sword even for the country."

"Then how?"

"Hmm, to be honest, you hid it quite well, Maro. At least, any secrets couldn't be traced through financial transactions… but you were practically broadcasting everything through your Link with Renge-chan."

Link? ...... No way.

"Link Peeping. It's a Secret Link for eavesdropping on other people's Telepathy."

...I've been had. I looked up to the sky.

I was completely blind to the existence of such a Link.

No, if I think about it carefully, there were clues.

Thanks to Links, humans can finally keep up with the combat speed of cards. Verbal communication isn’t fast enough to issue commands in time. It would be too slow. And yet, there's no technology or magic item that allows humans to communicate with each other at high speed.

With that being the case, conquering an A-rank dungeon would be impossible.

Or rather, I thought mind-reading magic items were the solution, but they actually had this all along.

A Link that connects Telepathy between humans...

"There are two types of Telepathy: open telepathy, which can be heard by anyone, and closed telepathy, which can only be heard by specific people. Well, it's like open chat and group chat in online games. If you notice it, I think you'd be able to use either one right away, Maro."

"...Thanks for that. I would have appreciated it if you had told me sooner, though."

"I wanted to, but things didn't work out that way."

To Kannadzuki, who calmly responded to my sarcasm, I sighed and changed the subject,

"So, what happens now?"

“Nothing in particular. If we can avoid this Angolmois, you can continue to dive into dungeons as you like, participate in MonColo matches, and make a fortune with Garnet's effects, just like before. Don't worry, even the government can't really do anything by force against someone who commands fully unleashed cards. They’ll just ask for your cooperation in conquering dungeons from time to time. I think you'll be properly compensated."

“Hmm.......”

So I’m allowed quite a bit of freedom, surprisingly. ...If that's really true, though.

"But I seriously don't know how to make dungeons disappear."

"We’ll have to recreate the situation from back then and investigate.”

With those words, Kannadzuki pulled out a Distress Magic Card1.

"I don't think you realized it, but immediately after the dungeon disappeared, you were interrogated using a mind-reading magic item. During that process, inconsistencies were found in your thoughts."

…So they did use a mind-reading magic item after all. Was it that detective who came to visit me, or maybe one of the nurses or doctors?

Even though it couldn’t be helped, it's still really unpleasant.

But, inconsistencies, huh?

"According to the official report, when you were attacked by the Hound Master, you supposedly escaped using a Transfer Magic Card. But for you, who possesses a Hamelin’s Flute, a Transfer Magic Card is the most useles thing, right, Maro?”

"...Well, yeah. But if you're just talking about how I didn’t sell it off quickly, it's not that strange. Due to taxes, adventurers usually only sell their magic items when they want to buy something else."

"Exactly. So not selling the Transfer Magic Card isn’t strange. What is strange is keeping that magic card you had no intention of using in an easily accessible chest pocket."

............That’s true.

Well, it's not entirely unheard of for someone to just stick a magic card they just got into their chest pocket and then forget about it, but it's a different story when it's a Transfer Card for me.

A Transfer Card that I have absolutely no intention of using would either be stored somewhere completely different or left at home...

"The possible explanations are that Maro was incredibly lazy... or that it was a different card altogether, not Transfer."

Or....... I glanced at Renge, who was looking thoughtful with a difficult expression.

Had my memory been tampered with so that I’d forget a card in my chest pocket…?

“…So, it was a Distress Card?”

"That's right. Well, apparently they tried the recreation experiment many times and it didn't work. But they think Maro might be different."

"Well, I can try. But if it doesn't work, leave me alone."

I have to protect my family.

"Mm... I don't have the authority to decide that, but if you can't reproduce it, Maro, I think the government will lost interest."

"I hope so..."

While saying that, I casually used the Distress Magic Card————and immediately lost consciousness.

"…i! Oiwake up!"

"Ugh..."

I was slapped on the cheek by Renge and came to.

"Where is this…?"

The place was a white space where countless spheres floated in the air.

In a space the size of a school gymnasium, bubble-like spheres drifted, and inside them were...

"Cards?"

At that moment, a strong sense of déjà vu flashed through my mind.

No, wait, I know this. I know this space!

That's right, it’s where I obtained the Lycanthrope I used for Yuki’s rank up.

"...Judging from your expression, it seems you’ve remembered."

"Renge... did you guys know about this place?"

"No...”

 Renge shook her head.

"I was Lost at that time, so my consciousness wasn't clear, and Yuki probably wasn't a Card Key at that time either, so her memories should have been altered just like yours."

“Card Key?”

"...It's a card that holds the qualification to enter this space. Apparently, the correct procedure is to obtain a Master Key when conquering an A-rank dungeon, and then use that Master Key to obtain Card Keys for each clearance level, but..."

...I don't really get it.

"So, the reason I can enter this space is because I posssess one of those Card Keys?"

"Yeah, Yuki is one. Yuki can access up to D-rank dungeons.”

"......If Yuki became Card Key, why was I able to enter the first time?"

...Was that you, Renge?

When I asked that with my eyes, Renge nodded with a solemn look.

"Yeah, I'm what's called a Discarded Card Key. A Discarded Card Key can access a dungeon up to its clearance level, but only once."

“....................... Huu-u.”

There are a lot of things I want to ask, but I can't sort out my emotions with all the new information coming in at once.

Even so, I should at least ask this one thing.

"Why have you kept such important information secret until now?"

"I couldn't tell you. Please understand."

"Okay."

Well, I figured. Even if they tampered with your memories, it wouldn’t make sense if the card just spilled the beans on its own memory.

There should be some kind of lock on it.

"By the way, what about Teacher... uh, Kannadzuki......?"

"...Isn't 'Teacher' fine? He probably became a spy after he taught you about Link anyway. You don't have to force yourself to build a wall in your heart. That kind of thing doesn’t suit you."

"...Yeah, you're right."

Unfortunately, my mentor was an intelligence operative from the government, but he was undoubtedly my benefactor who taught me about Links.

It's not like I don't have complicated feelings about it, but a sliver of friendship still remained.

I nodded once, sorted out my emotions, and then asked again,

"So, what about Teacher?"

"Only those with a Card Key can enter here. He's probably been kicked out to the outside of the dungeon by now."

"I see......"

"Now, what to do......”

I muttered, looking around at the bubbles floating around me.

I’ll probably be able to leave once I obtain a card inside those...

"…If there aren't any cards you particularly want, you should avoid touching the bubbles."

"Why?"

When I asked, Renge gestured with her chin towards a bubble.

"Take a little peek."

As told, I peered into a nearby bubble.

Inside, a scene resembling a horse racing track unfolded.

All the horses burst from the starting gate in unison, galloping at breakneck speed. However, towards the end, a jockey swung his whip, accidentally striking the eye of the horse next to him, and the other jockey was thrown to the ground. The following horses were rapidly closing in... Fortunately, the falling jockey didn't seem to die instantly, but it was clear that his body, plowed by the hooves, was critically injured...

"Ugh...!”

The jockey's pain and terror were directly transmitted to me as I watched the bubble, and I groaned, backing away from it.

This is...

"This shows a misfortune that is likely to happen soon. The dungeon harvests misfortunes in advance and manifests them in the form of monsters."

So, that means...

"You mean the dungeon is a device that collects and erases misfortunes......?”

"Nn........., well, that's one way to look at it."

"But then..."

What will happen to the misfortune that was supposed to be collected if the dungeon is erased...?

"Naturally, the misfortune will happen as it is."

At that moment, a strong wave of nausea washed over me.

I've already erased one dungeon.

If this is the level of misfortune from an F-rank monster, what about the D-rank dungeon I erased?

How many people have I killed...?

“...Just so you know, even if you erase a dungeon, things will only return to the way they were meant to be. Those destined to be injured will be injured, and those who were meant to die will just die. You’re not the one who killed them.”

“But if I hadn't erased the dungeon, they might have been saved, right...?”

"Not necessarily. In the first place, unless enough monsters are defeated to erase that misfortune, it won’t be avoided. It just means no one could overcome the trial. Dungeons aren’t that lenient. And by the way, they process one single misfortune with multiple monsters of the same rank simultaneously, so it's not like you erasing one dungeon guaranteed the misfortune to happen."

...So, that means it's not necessarily the case that I eliminated the possibility of them being saved.

I felt a slight weight lift from my chest.

"Oh yeah, every time a dungeon is cleared, a considerable amount of misfortune is extinguished, so I think you've probably saved quite a few people."

"If that’s the case, then that's good..."

"Even so, if one dungeon is erased, the efficiency worsens by that amount. Even if you erase a dungeon, you won’t be at fault at all, but if your conscience bothers you, then don't do it unless there's a card you desperately want."

"I will. ...By the way, how am I supposed to get out of here?"

"Don't worry. Cards aren’t the only thing you can obtain here."

Saying that, Renge moved ahead, weaving through the bubbles.

 I silently followed after her...

"Found it, found it. This is it."

What was there was a volleyball-sized, rainbow-colored crystal.

"This is?"

"This is a gacha."

"Huh...?"

That was quite the unexpected word.

"Uh… you can’t be serious, right?"

"No, but that’s actually the easiest way to understand it... if you touch this crystal, you'll randomly get an item that’s one rank or higher than this dungeon's rank. In this dungeon's case, that’s an E-rank item or higher. Just so you know, this ranking is different from the ranking humans decided on, so keep that in mind."

I see, that's definitely a gacha... In other words, it's like an 'E-rank or higher guaranteed gacha ticket,' huh?

"If I touch this, I can get out without destroying the dungeon, right?"

"That's how it works."

"...By the way, what about Luck Manipulation and stuff?"

“Ah, I said it's random, but the items themselves are determined the moment the dungeon appeared. So even if you use Luck Manipulation or Fate Manipulation now, the item that comes out will not change."

Well, nothing I can do about that then…

...Still, even though the content is already decided, I'm a little excited.

“...By the way, you've been unconscious for quite a while, so a lot of time has passed."

"You should have said that sooner!"

I hurriedly reached out and touched the crystal.

The moment I did, the surrounding space warped, and the next thing I knew, I was standing in front of the dungeon gate.

"So you get ejected the moment you touch it..."

 And also...

"The gate’s turned white?”

As I muttered, the now-transparent Renge spoke to me through the Link,

It's in a state of complete Calm2. For a while... well, for a year or so, Angolmois will not get triggered even if people don't attack this dungeon, and even if Angolmois occurs due to other dungeons, monsters won’t emerge from this one. Plus, unlike normal Calm, even if monsters enter from the outside, the Calm won't be lifted.

So, if we could bring all dungeons into this state, Angolmois could be avoided, huh?

Realistically, that’d be tough, but in this desperate situation, a tiny bit of hope had appeared.

Right, what did you get from the gacha?

Oh oh, that's right.

I looked at the single card I had somehow clenched in my hand.

It depicted an illustration of something that looked like a potion.

This is...

......A Middle Potion, huh. Well, just fitting.

Shut up. ...But I didn't lose my memories this time.

That's because you entered with a legitimate Card Key3 this time.

I see...

While talking like that, I opened the steel door and returned to the convenience store section...

"Maro!"

Teacher, who seemed to have been waiting outside, rushed over.

Crap... I completely forgot about this problem.

Now what should I do?

The Card Key I have probably only allows entry into dungeons up to D-rank.

It will be pointless to take me to clear an A-rank dungeon.

I need to somehow convince him and have him persuade the government...

"Ah... about that A-rank dungeon clearing thing..."

"That’s not important right now!"

 Teacher cut me off, shouting.

Seeing his expression, I understood everything.

"----Angolmois has begun!"

The end has begun.

[TIPS] Card Key

Card Keys are special cards that grant permission to enter a dungeon's core room.

Renge and Yuki are Card Keys, and skills such as [The True One] and [The Discarded One4] are proof of this.

Card Keys have clearance levels, and a lower-level Card Key cannot enter the core room of a higher-level dungeon.

Originally, these could only be obtained by clearing an A-rank dungeon and using the Master Key received as a reward to erase lower-level dungeons. However, it is also possible to obtain them illicitly by using a Discarded Card Key.

Even if obtained through unauthorized entry, the Card Key itself is legitimate and there are no issues with its use. However, the memories of the unauthorized entry are altered as a penalty.

The Distress Magic Card is not necessarily required to enter the core room; if you possess a Card Key and wish to go to the core room when passing through the exit gate on the lowest floor, entry is possible. Entering using a Distress Card is a backdoor method.

Notes:

To freshen up your memory, here is the description: Transference/teleportation magic is contained in this card. You will be randomly transferred to a floor you have not reached yet.

A reminder: During Angolmois, the flood of monsters from a dungeon can be temporarily stopped by either conquering the dungeon or defeating the boss of the dungeon.

We first saw the term in Chapter 63. We used 'genuine' before, but since even a Discarded Card Key is still a Card Key, we switched to 'legitimate'. This shows better how it fits the dungeon's rules.

We translated it as ‘The Abandoned One’ in Renge’s card stats before this, but it will be changed to ‘The Discarded One’ to fit things better
