Chapter 90
In the Forest
Translator : PolterGlast
After leaving the
royal capital, I walked through the Gava Forest beyond.
It was my first time
fighting outside a dungeon in this world in a while, so I was extra careful,
but of course, it wasn't a big problem.
With the strength to
conquer the [Knight's Holy Remains], the monsters in the forest were no match
for me.
Traveling alone was
faster, but I had a terrible sense of direction and almost got lost as soon as
I entered the forest.
So I asked Miku-san
for help, and now we're leisurely walking through the forest together.
"There are some
wild plants here that look really dangerous, I wonder if they're edible?"
"These starfish
mushrooms look dangerous too."
It felt more like a
picnic than an exploration.
Since we could go home
and rest whenever we got tired, we were both relaxed.
We collected some
flashy-colored mushrooms and wild plants as we pleased.
By the way, Miku-san
and I were carrying backpacks we brought from home.
I had looked around,
but these were far more useful than any backpacks sold in the royal capital.
"The wild plants
might be edible. I recognize some of them."
"Then we might as
well try eating them."
Since both Miku-san
and I could use the light magic [Cure], we could literally test them for poison
by eating them.
And in my case,
probably due to the LV up effect, poison had almost no effect on me.
According to Miku-san,
wild plants like mugwort, which I had seen in Japan, were also common here.
She said the
vegetation was a mess. As expected of another world.
"Oh, Miku-san,
there's a snake above you. Lightning."
"Kishaaaaa!?"
By constantly using
Wind Search and Mana Perception, I could tell where the monsters were.
So there was no need
to worry about being ambushed or surprised.
A brown snake fell
down after being hit by lightning.
My firepower, now that
I was over LV 240, had reached the realm of the inhuman, and even the weakest
lightning magic, [Lightning], was overkill for the monsters in this forest.
A delicious smell
wafted from the blackened snake.
Miku-san and I
naturally made eye contact.
My stomach rumbled,
and Miku-san's stomach followed suit, albeit more discreetly.
I nodded slightly at
Miku-san, who was blushing in embarrassment.
It was almost
lunchtime... it was only natural that we were tempted by such a smell.
It was the moment when
today's lunch was decided.
My cooking skills were
garbage compared to Miku-san, whose "femininity scouter" would
probably explode.
Since "leave it
to the professionals," I did a light bloodletting and left the rest to
Miku-san.
While she was cooking,
I decided to explore.
What? You're telling
me to stop because I'll get lost again?
Tch, tch, tch, don't
be silly.
I wouldn't repeat the
same mistake.
I had a secret weapon
in my hand.
"...Okay, it
works fine."
I had finally found it
in the back of the storage room--the compass I used in an experiment in
elementary school!
Relying on the needle
that turned and pointed red to the north, I proceeded without getting lost.
As expected of one of
the three great inventions.
With this, I could
even go on a great voyage.
...Well, I don't know
anything about ships in this world, though.
I could probably use
wind magic to blow the sails and water magic to control the ocean currents, so
compared to the real Middle Ages, sailing technology would be more advanced.
And there are magic
tools and magic.
"Come to think of
it, a compass is a magnet."
Since there are
railguns, I could probably make electromagnets with lightning magic.
But even if I did, I
don't know what I'd use them for... with my poor modern knowledge, I can only
think of using them to collect iron sand in a sandbox.
After walking through
the forest for about an hour, I returned home.
And there... was a
wonderful snake dish.
"I tested it for
poison, and it was okay."
Snake skewers, a snake
stew, and was that... snake teriyaki?
"Let's eat,
then."
"Okay, let's
eat!"
Miku-san's cooking was
delicious.
It originally had a
bit of a stench, but by rubbing it with herb-infused salt and making it into
teriyaki, she made it undetectable. She was a professional.
I hadn't noticed when
I was alone, but it was very comforting to have someone cook for me at home and
eat with me.
It might be
presumptuous, but I felt like I understood a little bit how people who want to
have a family feel.
"Oh, that's a
compass, right? You found it!"
"Yeah, now I can
explore alone without making Miku-san do anything unreasonable."
"...I wasn't
doing anything unreasonable. I enjoy walking through the forest with you,
Masaru-kun."
Since I had a compass,
I thought it would be better to go through the forest alone.
But if Miku-san said
so, we could go a little further together.
I was kind of enjoying
it too, like fieldwork.
And so, we slowly and
leisurely enjoyed the Gava Forest--.
