[WN] A Hero From a Remote Village : Chapter 4

Chapter 4

The Adventurer's Guild

Translator : PolterGlast

"Whoa... It's big. No, this is too big."

Everything in the town was eye-catching, but the Adventurer's Guild was such an overwhelming building that it made me mutter that to myself. It was a huge building that could probably fit half of Furo village inside, and people were coming and going from it without pause.

Just because it was big didn't mean it was crudely built; I could tell it was constructed with care down to the finest detail. I felt so intimidated before even entering that my will to go inside vanished, but.... Paying no mind to my feelings, I was swallowed by the flow of people coming from behind and ended up entering the Adventurer's Guild against my will.

I knew from the outside that there were a lot of people, but the inside was packed with adventurers and was in a boisterous uproar. I had thought a forty-two-year-old, one-armed geezer would stick out, but there were so many different people of all ages, genders, and races that I immediately realized I was just being self-conscious.

"Maybe they'll accept me here."

I muttered to myself once again, but my words reached no one's ears, instantly drowned out by the surrounding noise.

First... I guess I'll head to the reception desk.

Looking at the sign hanging from the ceiling, I followed the flow of people to the place marked "Consultation Desk." I got in line and was observing my surroundings when, once again, my turn came in no time.

It was the same at the gate inspection, but with this many people, everything is so new that I get the feeling time is melting away just by observing. Though it's probably also because the soldiers and receptionists are so experienced and good at handling people.

"Welcome. This is the consultation desk."

"Yeah. I came… have come to consult about something."

"Fufu, you don't have to use formal language, it's alright. So, how may I help you?"

The receptionist, a beauty the likes of which I'd never seen, gave a gentle smile at my forced formal speech and went out of her way to tell me I didn't need to use it. If I were a bit younger, I would have fallen for her in an instant, but at my age, I can't—no, I'm not allowed to—fall in love at first sight with a woman more than a decade younger than me. ...That's not it, I need to tell her why I'm here.

"I came because I want to become an adventurer. How can I do that?"

"...? Uh, umm, do you mean your child wants to become an adventurer?"

"No, I want to become an adventurer."

"Ah... I see, I see! Were you perhaps an adventurer in another town? If so, could you please show me the adventurer card you used in that town?"

"No, today is the first time I've ever wanted to become an adventurer."

"Hmm... well... I see. Were you previously a soldier or something... of the sort?"

"No, I've lived in a frontier village for about forty years, working as a farmer. Ah, but I do have experience fighting off monsters that attacked the village."

"........................"

I answered her questions honestly, but with each answer, the receptionist became less talkative. Now, it looked like she was trying her best to say something but couldn't find the words, her mouth opening and closing desperately. It seemed she still couldn't find the words, so we just exchanged polite smiles and smiled at each other for a while.

"............To take on a challenge after turning forty is, I-I think, a very admirable thing!"

"Thank y—"

"However, being an adventurer is an extremely dangerous profession! It's not at all uncommon for even adventurers with years of experience from a young age to lose their lives easily once they pass forty. That age is basically considered veteran-level, and starting as a rookie at that age is equivalent to suicide. On top of that... to do so with one arm, I can state with certainty that it is reckless. Even so—do you still wish to become an adventurer?"

Her strained smile vanished, and the receptionist gave me her warning with a serious gaze. For her to worry this much about someone like me, whom she's just met, she must be concerned for my life out of 100% goodwill.

If I were to die easily, it would surely give the receptionist some sleepless nights, but.... I don't have the option to quit. In order to live, I have no choice but to do this.

"Thank you truly for the warning. But being an adventurer is the only job someone like me can get right now. If it's possible, I'd like to register as one."

"...I understand. If you have that much resolve, then I won't try to stop you anymore. Could you please fill out your name and other information on this paper?"

"Understood. I'll fill it out."

I was handed a piece of paper and a pen, and I began to write my information on the sheet.
