Chapter 5
Public Order

"I've filled it
out. Is this okay?"
"Let me confirm.
--Yes, there are no issues. We will now create your adventurer card, so please
wait a moment."
The receptionist told
me this, then disappeared into a room behind her, and came back a few minutes
later with an adventurer card.
"Thank you for
waiting. This is your adventurer card. You won't be able to accept quests
without this card, so please be careful not to lose it."
"Thank you. I'll
be careful not to lose it. ...Can I accept quests now?"
"Yes, you can
accept quests, but... I think you should form a party first. Do you have any
adventurer friends?"
"No, I don't. I
left my village alone, without any connections."
"I... see. I
understand! Could you please wait a moment?"
"Yeah, of course,
I'll wait."
The receptionist stood
up again and disappeared into the back room where she had gone to get the
adventurer card. This time, she didn't come back for longer than before,
finally reappearing after more than ten minutes.
"Thank you for
waiting. I've found someone who is currently a solo adventurer, so I'll
introduce you. Their name is Ginia-san, and they just recently became an
adventurer. It seems they also work part-time at a tavern on Elma Street, so
how about you try going there?"
"So this
Ginia-san... might be willing to form a party with me?"
"Yes. They're a
solo adventurer, but actually, they haven't managed to complete a single quest
yet. So, I thought if you invited them, they might join your party."
"I see. Thank you
for going out of your way to look that up for me. You've been a great
help."
"This is all I
can really do. When you accept a quest, please do it at my counter."
"Yeah. If I'm
successful in my invitation, I'll come back and report."
The receptionist was
now giving me a genuine smile, not a strained one. I bowed deeply to her and
then decided to head straight for the tavern on Elma Street that she told me
about. I don't know what this Ginia person is like, but if they've never
completed a quest, there's a chance they'll form a party with me.
Thanks to the
receptionist who helped me, a small ray of hope had appeared. I was walking
towards the exit with a sense of relief when—someone suddenly stood in my way.
"Hey, hey, did
you hear that! This geezer's a rookie adventurer! He said he doesn't have a
party, either!"
"So that means
you're looking for a party, right!? Gahaha! Who'd team up with a geezer like
this!"
"A dreaming old
man, that's just too pathetic! Hey, look. He's even got one arm!"
Three rough-looking adventurers
started pointing at me and laughing. It seems that even among adventurers, with
all their different races and ages, I'm quite the outcast.
Even the receptionist
from earlier, who has probably seen all sorts of people, was quite surprised as
she learned more about me. Even though I had prepared myself for it, being
confronted with the harsh reality made the feeling of relief I had just felt
vanish in an instant.
"Sorry, but
please move. I want to get out."
"Huh? You
couldn't take a quest 'cause you don't have any party members? Well, this is
perfect! If you give us some money, we'll let you in our party! It'll be one
gold coin a day! You get to experience being with B-rank adventurers, so one
gold coin is cheap, right! Gahaha!"
The rough-looking
adventurer provoked me with an unpleasant laugh. They were already showing me a
harsh reality, and now they were kicking me while I was down and making a fool
of me. What awful adventurers. I wanted to retort, but there was nothing I
could say, and I didn't want to stand out by getting into a pointless fight, so
I left the Adventurer's Guild in silence as if I were fleeing.
"If you get one
gold coin, we'll take you in anytime! Come back when you've got the money!
Gya-ha-ha!"
Sigh...
I was prepared for it,
but being mocked out loud like that really gets to you.
I'm nothing but
anxious about whether I can make it, but for now, I'll look for this Ginia
person. For every person like those adventurers who mocked me, there's also
someone like the old woman or the receptionist who were kind to me. As a
geezer, I don't have time to waste moping around, so I slapped my cheeks to
psych myself up and started walking towards Elma Street.
But, still...
I didn't sense any
strength from those adventurers who harassed me just now.
In terms of their
presence, I felt they were weaker than a single one of the undead in the army
led by Elder Lich Wiseperson.
--No, they said they
were B-rank adventurers, and there's no way adventurers in a town this big are
weak.
I'm always suppressing
my presence, too, so those adventurers were probably intentionally suppressing
theirs as well.
Having concluded this
in my mind, I headed for Elma Street.
