Chapter 50
The Request
Translator : PolterGlast
As I was recalling
nostalgic events from Furo Village, I spoke to the Guild Master.
"So, well, I
think I naturally got stronger because I lived in that kind of
environment."
"I see. So it was
an environment where you had no choice but to become strong. I understand the
secret of your strength. I'd like to hear more about that time, but... I'll
move on to my next question. With all that skill, why did you start as a rookie
adventurer? I've heard bits and pieces of how you were mocked by other
adventurers as a one-armed old rookie."
"Even if you ask
me why... I had never once left my village since I was born, and in the first
place, I never thought of myself as strong."
"Even though you
had defeated a monster called an Ancient Dragon!?"
"Because, well,
it was a really small village. I just assumed that was the kind of monster that
appeared around other villages and towns too."
I had no outside
information, so that couldn't be helped.
"It's incredible
what a lack of information can do. Even with your power, you were able to think
that there's always someone better."
"By the way, just
how strong am I? Do I have enough power to rival an A-class adventurer?"
"A-rank?
Absolutely not! You definitely have the power of an S-class adventurer! No...
it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say you're even beyond S-class. In any case,
I know because I'm a former A-rank adventurer myself, but your power is the
greatest in the kingdom!"
If the Guild Master is
willing to go that far, then maybe it's okay for me to have a little more
confidence.
Though I do think
saying I'm the strongest in the kingdom is an exaggeration.
"It gives me
confidence to hear you say that. Actually, I was thinking of subjugating the
dangerous monsters in the vicinity of this city. I visited you yesterday
intending to ask for your help with that... If you don't mind, would you be
willing to help me?"
"The dangerous
monsters in the vicinity, you mean like the Magus of Death? Of course, if it's
a request from you, Graham-san, I will help! By the way... this is very
difficult to ask, but would it be possible for me to accompany you?"
He leaned forward over
his desk and made that proposal in response to mine.
He means he wants to
come along?
I already have my
hands full with Aoi, so I'd rather he didn't come along, but... I'm the one
asking for his help, so I feel bad refusing.
"As long as you
don't get in the way, I don't mind. In return, can I have you help me with
various things in your capacity as Guild Master?"
"Of course! Tell me
anything. I think I can do basically anything."
"In that case,
right away... I want all the information you have on the Berserk Bear to the
west."
"The Berserk
Bear, huh. That's a monster that lives deep in a forest called Hest Forest, to
the northwest of this city. It's a giant bear-like monster said to be over five
meters in total length."
"Hest Forest...
Maybe we should try going there right away."
"By the way,
because the Berserk Bear lives there, Hest Forest is off-limits, even to
adventurers. As such, I have almost no information on the forest itself. Is
that alright?"
"As long as I
know the location of the forest, it's fine. I'm good at scouting, too."
"I guess that was
an unnecessary worry for you, Graham-san. In any case, if you're going to subjugate
the Berserk Bear, please let me accompany you! When you succeed, I promise to
publicize it in a big way at the Adventurer's Guild!"
The Guild Master said
that while thumping his chest, but I wish he'd stop with the publicity.
As I've said many
times, I want to avoid being treated like a hero excessively.
It can't be helped if
my name gets out there naturally, but I want to avoid promoting myself as much
as possible.
I've learned from my
current life that being treated as "a good person known only to those in
the know" is very comfortable for me.
"I'm doing this
as a good deed, so I don't need any excessive publicity. In fact, I'd rather
you didn't. Nothing good comes from standing out at my age."
"That's not...
true. You'd be thanked just for walking down the street, and with your power,
Graham-san, I believe you could leave behind a legend that will be told for all
eternity, starting now!"
"I'm not doing it
to be thanked, and a life where I'm thanked just for walking down the street is
suffocating. I want to drink normally and buy snacks from stalls. In short, I
don't want to stand out excessively, so I'd like you to move in secret, Guild
Master."
"I think it's
such a waste when it's a chance for people to get to know you, Graham-san,
but... if that's what you wish, then I understand."
The Guild Master
reluctantly agreed, though he looked disappointed.
For now, my business
with the Guild Master should be settled.
"It helps that
you understand. Well then, once I've decided on a date to subjugate the Berserk
Bear, I'll come to your office again."
"Yeah. I still
have more I want to ask, so I'll be waiting anytime. Feel free to come by
whenever you like, even if you don't have any business."
"I probably won't
come if I don't have any business, but if something comes up, I'll be sure to
ask."
I said that to the
Guild Master, and then I left the Adventurer's Guild.
Perhaps because I
didn't hold back and showed him a glimpse of my true strength yesterday, he
seems willing to cooperate fully, and I think we've been able to build a good
relationship.
If the Guild Master of
the Adventurer's Guild is willing to help, there's nothing more reassuring.
He'll probably gather
all sorts of information, and based on that, I should be able to do good deeds
other than monster subjugation as well.
With a beaming face, I
left the Adventurer's Guild and made my way to the tavern where Ginia and Aoi
were likely waiting.
