Chapter 51
The Presence
Translator : PolterGlast
Three days have passed
since the meeting with the Guild Master.
Today, as promised to
the Dead Priest, I planned to visit the old abandoned road myself.
"Today's the day
we finally go to see the Magus of Death! I'm excited to see what a monster
that's said to kill you on sight is like!"
"I'm scared,
though... The impression from last time was so strong that I've already got
goosebumps."
"You'll be fine,
Ginia. I'm sure it's completely subservient."
"I don't think
it's subservient to me. It's a monster; I'm sure it's just an act it puts on in
front of you, Graham-san."
"If that's the
case, then we can just make it understand this time. You've gotten stronger by
leaps and bounds since the Lesser Ogre fight, Ginia."
"Ehehe, it's all
thanks to you, Graham-san! Ever since that battle with the Lesser Ogres, I feel
like I can vaguely see how to correctly use my eyes and move my body."
As Ginia says herself,
her growth after that one battle has been truly tremendous.
I had always thought she
had good eyes suited for combat, but now she understands how to use them, and
it feels like her body has finally caught up.
"Her movements
were like a rookie with a bit of experience, but in that one battle, she
started moving like a C-rank adventurer! I'm so jealous... I want to be trained
by Graham, too..."
Aoi muttered in an
intentionally dramatic tone while glancing at my face.
I used to coach people
back in the village, and I don't dislike it, so I don't mind, but it's rare for
things to go as well as they did with Ginia.
In fact, I had never
seen anyone in Furo Village grow so rapidly, so I think it was just a fluke
that it clicked so well.
I'd be in trouble if
she had overly high expectations, but Aoi has said she'll help with the good
deeds, so I'll at least provide some combat training.
"I can train you
anytime. In return, don't have any excessive expectations. Ginia was just a
fluke; she just had high potential to begin with."
"I don't have any
potential like that! It was really all thanks to you, Graham-san."
"Yay! I'm not
expecting to grow as fast as Ginia, so it's fine! After we beat the Berserk
Bear, you'll train me!"
"Yeah, alright.
There have been some wasteful movements in your style that have been bothering
me for a while now, so I'll be thorough. I'm going to be strict, so be
prepared."
We continued our
conversation as we passed through the abandoned road and stepped onto the old
abandoned road.
The moment we entered
the old road, the temperature dropped at once, and combined with the darkness,
it was starting to get atmospheric.
"Whooa...! This
is my first time here, but it's super scary! This is a textbook spooky
place."
"It certainly has
the atmosphere. But there's no need to be afraid."
I called out to the
needlessly frightened Aoi, and as we walked towards the back of the old
abandoned road, we arrived at that garbage dump in no time.
No monsters attack on
the old abandoned road, and it's pleasantly cool, making it very easy to walk.
With that thought, I
looked towards the garbage dump and saw the Dead Priest standing in the center.
Next to it were two
Ghost Wizards of the same type I had cut down last time, bowing their heads
towards us.
"Graham-sama,
thank you for taking the trouble to come all this way! Please forgive me for
not having anything to offer you!"
"I wasn't
expecting anything, so don't worry about it. More importantly, you left in a
hurry last time. Was everything okay?"
"About that...
I've learned something a little troublesome. It wasn't just the Flame
Ogre!"
"Hmm? What do you
mean?"
"After hearing
that a Flame Ogre was born into the Red Ogre horde, I immediately had my undead
subordinates investigate, and... a Gold Golem has been born where the Silver
Golem was, and a Berserker Bear has been born where the Berserk Bear was!"
I don't quite
understand what the Dead Priest is saying, but does it mean that higher-ranking
species of the monsters that ruled the north, south, east, and west were all
born at the same time?
"Something about
this smells fishy. Has a higher-ranking species of Dead Priest, the ruler of
the eastern area, not been born?"
"Unfortunately,
there have been no major changes in our group. It might be related to the fact
that, unlike the others, it's not a horde of Dead Priests, but just me."
"Is that so. I
thought if a higher-ranking Dead Priest had been born too, we might understand
the reason. By the way, do you know anything about the reason?"
"It's only at the
rumor stage, but... I've heard that someone claiming to be from the Demon
Lord's army has been making the rounds and contacting monsters."
The Demon Lord's army.
Hearing those words, I felt my body tense up.
They were the enemy
that had attacked Furo Village time and time again, an enemy that had put my
life in danger many times.
The last attack, in
particular, was a true battle to the death, so it's no wonder my body tensed
up.
"G-Graham-san,
are you okay? Th-the atmosphere suddenly got scary...!"
"I-I feel like
your killing intent is leaking out! It's making my body shake, so stop
it!"
"Ah, sorry. I
tensed up, and my presence must have leaked out."
Being called out by
Ginia and Aoi, I realized that the presence I usually suppress had leaked out.
Recalling my battles
with the Demon Lord's army, I had unconsciously stopped suppressing my
presence.
"G-Graham-sama!
Th-that presence isn't directed at us, is it!? I am already dead, but my body
can't stop shaking."
When I turned back to
the front, the Dead Priest was trembling, backing away slowly.
It seems it thought my
killing intent was directed at it.
I need to be careful
not to let my presence leak out like this in the future.
