Chapter 60
A Single Blow
Translator : PolterGlast
Appearing while
snapping trees, it was a bear-like monster covered in gray fur: a Berserk Bear.
Its eyes were
bloodshot, and fangs peeked out from its mouth.
Its body was about six
meters long, a completely different league of large compared to the Red Ogres
and Flame Ogres.
Drool dripped from its
half-open mouth, and the moment it saw us, it began to move at once, intending
to devour us.
"What's the plan?
Aoi, Ginia, are you going to fight?"
I called out to them,
but there was no reply from the two.
Its entrance was
incredibly flashy, and the pressure, even greater than the Ogre's, seems to
have intimidated them, even if just for a moment.
If that's the case, it
can't be helped. I'll take out the first one.
I could burn it to
death with [Purifying Flame], but if I have an opponent with a body this
massive, I'd rather have a physical fight.
Without even drawing
my katana, I readied my fist and stepped in front of the two who were frozen in
place.
Having only one arm is
a handicap for hand-to-hand combat, but against an opponent of this level, one
arm is plenty.
Against the Berserk
Bear that opened its mouth wide and lunged at me as if to bite, I met it
head-on in a fistfight instead of dodging.
Its movements are
slow, but with a body that large, it has momentum.
I grinned, and then
slammed my fist into the face of the bear as it opened its mouth wide to bite
me.
My fist landed a clean
hit between its nose and front teeth, and though I felt a slight weight, I
followed through with the punch.
It's been a long time
since I've punched anything, and the feeling of exhilaration is incredible.
Seeing the Berserk
Bear go flying as it spun through the air, my blood began to pump even faster.
I could follow up with
a high kick next, or it might be interesting to land a body blow.
I did a light step,
waiting for the Berserk Bear to get up and attack again, but... no matter how
long I waited, it showed no sign of getting up.
"...Hmm? What's
the Berserk Bear doing?"
"Graham-san. That
Berserk Bear is already dead."
The Guild Master was
the one who answered my mutter.
But I couldn't believe
it had died in a single blow, so I went to check on the fallen Berserk Bear,
and... it really was dead, with the whites of its eyes showing.
"Its neck was
probably broken. ...No, that's not all. The impact must have scrambled its
brain, too. For the Berserk Bear, it was an unstoppable blow."
"That's the first
time I've ever seen something so huge go flying...! It was a really strange
feeling, seeing the bigger one get sent flying even though it was the one
charging!!"
The Guild Master and
Ginia are praising me, but all I feel is that it was unsatisfying.
I thought the real
fight was just about to start, but it couldn't even withstand a single punch?
"It was over so
fast it was unsatisfying, but there are still about eighteen more approaching
from the back. What's the plan? I don't mind defeating them myself, but I think
this is a good opportunity for you two."
"...I'll fight!
Watching your battle, Graham-san, made all the tension leave my body!"
"I-I'll..."
Aoi looked as if she
had been completely intimidated, just like with the Ogres, but...
She shook her head
forcefully, then slapped her own cheeks with all her might.
"—I'll fight too!
If I run away here, it'll be the same as with the Ogres!"
"Sorry to
interrupt while you're getting fired up, but you don't have to be that scared.
It's just big; its attacks are crude. If you think of it as a big Battle Ape,
you can fight it easily."
"I'm absolutely
sure that's not the case, but... I'll do my best to defeat one!"
Just as Ginia got
fired up, the Berserk Bears that were following behind appeared.
They were smaller than
the previous individual, but there were three of them, each easily over five
meters tall.
Even one of them was
impressive, but three lined up is a truly spectacular sight.
I figured a situation
where they were outnumbered would be tough, so I decided to take out two of
them.
"I'll take care
of two of them, so Ginia and Aoi, you two just focus on the one in the
front."
"Hey, Graham-san,
how are you planning on defeating them?"
"I'm thinking of
using magic. My enthusiasm for close combat has cooled."
"Magic because
your enthusiasm cooled...! Kuhaha! Is it that strange fire magic from the other
day?"
"No, this time
I'm planning on using non-elemental magic. I can't just use fire-attribute
magic all the time."
Answering the Guild
Master's question, I held out one hand towards the Berserk Bears that had
appeared.
And then, I poured
magic power into my outstretched right hand—.
"[Gravity Magic -
Zero]."
With my chant, two of
the Berserk Bears began to float into the air.
It's a spell that
controls gravity with magic, and while the two Berserk Bears are floating as if
they're having fun, they seem to be unable to breathe and are struggling in
agony.
"I'll finish you
so you don't suffer for long. —[Gravity Magic - Impact]."
The moment I chanted
the next spell, the two floating Berserk Bears were smashed into the ground as
if they had been thrown down, and died.
Death by crushing,
from having gravity suddenly applied after being in a zero-gravity state.
The sight was intense
and a little gruesome, but I should have been able to let them die without
suffering.
