Interlude 12
The Guild Masters' Meeting, Part 3
Translator : PolterGlast
Salis retired from
adventuring three years ago and, like Dwayne, joined the Adventurer's Guild.
She was immediately
given the post of Vice Guild Master, and in the following year, she became the
Guild Master.
From Dwayne's
perspective, who had climbed to the position of Guild Master over ten years
without using any connections, Salis, who had shot to the top through her
connections, was an unpleasant existence, but...
With her overwhelming
charisma, she has grown the Royal Capital's Adventurer's Guild to its largest
size ever, leaving no room for complaint.
"Salis, my bad.
It's nothin'. I just teased Dwayne a little and he seriously snapped, that's
all!"
"Hmm. It's
unusual for Dwayne to get angry just from being teased."
"Fuohohoho. Since
you're here, why don't we have you listen as well? It would be good to have you
judge whether Dwayne's story is true or not."
"Whether Dwayne's
story is true or not...? I can't quite follow the conversation."
Dwayne glared at Old
Man Shiro for bringing the conversation back, but Old Man Shiro pretended not
to notice with an aloof attitude.
"We were talking
about a forty-two-year-old rookie adventurer. It seems he recently became an
adventurer in Biodasdal, but according to Dwayne-san, he's an incredible
prodigy, and we were debating whether that was true or a lie."
"A
forty-two-year-old rookie adventurer? Normally, the probability of him being a
prodigy is extremely low, but if Dwayne is the one saying it, isn't it likely
true? There's the possibility that he was an adventurer in another country, or
that he's survived deadly battlefields as a mercenary."
Unlike the other
three, she took a stance of trusting Dwayne.
Thanks to that, he was
able to regain his composure.
"But that's
almost impossible! This Dwayne guy went and claimed he's even stronger than an
S-class adventurer!"
"Even I found
that statement to be offensive. An E-rank adventurer being stronger than an
S-class adventurer. It's impossible."
"Hoh, he went that
far? —Dwayne, is he really that strong?"
"...Yeah. There's
no doubt that he's strong."
Salis nodded
repeatedly, looking intrigued, and then, as if she'd just had an idea, she
clapped her hands once.
"In that case,
let's gather the strongest adventurers from each city and hold an exchange
meeting. I for one would like to see an adventurer that you would praise so
highly, Dwayne."
Suddenly abandoned by
Salis, who he had thought was his ally, Dwayne's mouth hung agape.
"W-wait a minute!
That's not a good idea!"
"Hmm? What's not
a good idea?"
"Wahaha! Is it
because your lie will be exposed? By the way, I'm all for it! It's the perfect
opportunity to show off [Crimson Rose]!"
"I have no
objection either. I will bring our strongest adventurer party."
"Fuohohoho. I
don't mind either."
With everyone but him
showing their approval, a condition was created from which he could not back
down.
Sweat beaded on his
forehead, and though he desperately tried to think of a way out, not a single
good idea came to mind.
"...F-fine. Only
if Graham-san agrees, I will also participate."
"Huh? Your
participation is mandatory, obviously! This whole thing is happening because we
want to see this Graham-san you're talking about!"
"It might be
interesting to hold a martial arts tournament to decide the strongest. Fufu,
let's start deciding what to do now."
With Salis's whisper,
it was decided that a gathering of the adventurers from each city would be
held.
Tracing it all back,
the cause of everything was Dwayne losing his temper and blurting out Graham's
name.
He held his head in
despair, but it was too late to turn back now.
"Regardless of
this Graham person, this is an exciting first attempt. If it goes well, it
might be a good event to hold regularly."
"That's true.
We've only ever talked amongst ourselves as Guild Masters, but it would be good
for the adventurers to interact with each other. It would be stimulating, and
though it was an impromptu idea, we should consider holding it regularly."
"Dwayne, your face
is pale. Are you alright? Fuohohoho. It's too late to back out now."
Old Man Shiro spoke to
Dwayne, but there was no reply from Dwayne, whose mind had gone completely
blank.
How was he going to
report this to Graham-san?
And would Graham-san
hate him for this?
He could think of
nothing else, and Dwayne's face grew paler and paler by the second.
"Alright. Now
that the small talk is over, shall we get to the main topic? I've gathered you
all here today because there has been movement from the Demon Lord's army, and
I wanted to share that information—"
Even as Salis moved on
to the main topic, the words went in one ear and out the other for Dwayne, and
in the end, the Guild Masters' meeting concluded with him unable to think of
anything at all.
