Chapter 105
The Devil's Whisper
Translator : PolterGlast
"Dammit! That bastard!"
The sound of a fist slamming
violently against a table rang out, and for a moment, the establishment was
enveloped in silence.
Under normal circumstances, anyone
displaying such crude behavior would be thrown out immediately. However, the
customer causing the scene this time was a Guild Master of the Adventurer's
Guild.
He was a patron with deep pockets
who ordered countless bottles of high-end liquor. While his arrogance was
always conspicuous, he had never been this rowdy
before, leaving the proprietor unable to bring himself to kick him out. It was
clearly a case of drinking to drown one's sorrows, and while the proprietor wanted
to avoid getting involved, he decided to hear the man out.
"Guanza-san. You seem
unusually upset. Has something happened?"
"Hah?! None of your damn
business!"
"It isn't 'none of my
business.' Even if you are the Guild Master of another city, you are a
valued customer of my shop. If something has happened, please tell me."
"……………………I was made a fool of
by some piece of shit! Getting carried away despite being a mere D-Rank
adventurer!"
"Made a fool of? You, Guild
Master Guanza?"
"That's right! Me, the highest
authority in the guild! I will absolutely never forgive him!"
A D-Rank adventurer. Guanza
being mocked. And this level of rage. The proprietor had reluctantly spoken up
intending to defuse a bomb, but the content was far more interesting than he expected,
piquing his curiosity.
"You mentioned a D-Rank
adventurer... were you insulted by a D-Rank?"
"I told you I was! He picked a
fight with me, and then... he cut my arm! That shithead!"
"Cut... Could this be related
to the Exchange Match you mentioned before?"
"...Yeah. Those lot from Crimson
Rose lost so easily!! A total defeat! You have to be kidding me! They
stained my reputation! Ah, I want to kill them all!"
The proprietor wanted to hear more,
but Guanza's rage made it unwise to pry too deeply. Inferring from the
fragmented information, it was the Exchange Match where guilds from major
cities gathered. There, the Crimson Rose led by Guanza lost to a D-Rank
adventurer, and Guanza himself was mocked and cut down.
It sounded like a tremendously
interesting story, and the proprietor found himself extremely curious about
this D-Rank adventurer.
"That is... a disaster. To
think there is a fool who would defy Guanza-san."
"I will absolutely make him
regret it...! Just remembering it makes me—DAMN IT ALL!"
Even after the proprietor listened
to him, Guanza's anger did not subside; remembering the events only
seemed to make him rage harder. Sensing that it was best not to touch the
subject any further, the proprietor decided to close up shop for the day and
let him be. Guanza continued to rage alone until late into the night.
Eventually, after drinking heavily
alone, Guanza returned to the inn in a drunken stupor. He had consumed
enough alcohol to lose his memory, but even after drinking that much, Graham
would not leave his mind. He was unable to get fully drunk, and his anger
remained unquelled.
This was the first time in his life
he had felt this way—a person
he hated enough to kill. Guanza kicked at whatever caught his eye as he
returned to the inn, but then, a single man called out to him.
"I heard your conversation at
the bar. You are a Guild Master of the Adventurer's Guild,
correct?"
"Aahn?! Who the hell are
you!"
"Apologies for the late
introduction. My name is Granad. I
cannot say this too loudly, but... I serve as a senior officer in the
Demon King's Army."
The moonlight illuminated his face,
revealing the man who called himself Granad. At a glance, he looked like
nothing more than a human, but Granad's eyes were entirely black... Upon
seeing those eyes, Guanza intuitively understood that Granad was
not lying.
"...Are you really from the Demon King's Army? It's awfully careless of you
to call out to an Adventurer's Guild Master! I never thought you'd be
hiding in the Royal Capital."
"I approached you because
it is you, Guanza-san. ...You have someone you want to kill so badly you
hate them, yes? Will you not guide me? If you do, I will kill that human for
you."
It was truly a devil's whisper. The Adventurer's
Guild is an organization that brings together countless adventurers; if its
top official were to lend a hand to the Demon King's Army, the collapse
would begin.
...However, the current Guanza was
consumed by hatred to the point where none of that mattered. The suspicious
timing of this man's approach. The undeniable fact that he was a senior officer
of the Demon King's Army. Despite harboring doubts about every aspect of this,
Guanza let out a single, loud laugh.
"If you kill Graham,
I'll help you just this once, even if you are the Demon King's Army!
You'll really do it, right?"
"Of course. Even if it is a promise
with a human, I never break my word. The terms of the contract are as follows:
I will kill the human known as Graham.
In exchange, you, Guanza-san, will provide full cooperation to me, a
senior officer of the Demon King's Army.
Is this acceptable?"
"Yeah. If you really kill him,
I don't give a damn!"
"Then the contract is
concluded. Now then—first, I shall borrow that body of yours."
"...Hah?"
The moment Granad spoke those
words, Guanza was assailed by a sensation of all strength draining from
his body at once. In this instant, Guanza realized he had made a
mistake, but it was far too late.
"I shall put it to good use. Kufufufu,
it should be common sense not to exchange contracts with demons so easily... I truly do not understand humans. Weak, stupid,
and incompetent individuals sit at the top."
Guanza's face, now devoid of anger, looked like that of a
different person. Laughing like a devil, he disappeared into the night city.
