Chapter 99
Battenberg
Translator : PolterGlast
When Salis called me
over, the two women from [Battenberg], Zola and Sonia, bowed deeply to me.
I returned their nod
and then asked Salis what she wanted.
"Is our next
opponent [Battenberg]?"
"Yes. You will be
fighting [Battenberg] next. Since the [Crimson Rose] was defeated so
spectacularly by Graham, it seems they're not ready yet."
"I see. So it's a
match with [Battenberg], who haven't fought yet."
"That's right.
Are you ready?"
"Yeah. I'm not
tired at all from the first match, so I can fight right away."
It wasn't even a
warm-up, so I'm eager to fight.
I'm interested in the
leader of [Battenberg], Duke, so I'm very much looking forward to crossing
swords with him.
"That's the
situation, but is [Battenberg] ready as well?"
"Of course, we
are ready."
"Graham-sama, we
look forward to the match."
"Yeah.
Likewise."
After shaking hands
with both Zola and Sonia, I returned to Ginia and Aoi for a moment.
"What did
Salis-san say to you?"
"It seems our
next match is up. It's against [Battenberg]."
"The little kid's
group? They're pretty strong, right?"
"From my first
impression, I thought they were stronger than [Crimson Rose] or [Sakura
Nostra]."
"Stronger than
the two groups that lost... they sound tough."
"He just looks
like a kid at a glance! But he's an S-rank adventurer, so he must be
amazing!"
I wonder how strong he
is at that age.
I don't feel the same
emotions as I did with [Crimson Rose], so I'm glad that I can fight with just
pure excitement.
After the three of us
exchanged our thoughts, we stood before Salis.
[Battenberg] also
stood opposite us, and their leader, Duke, was glaring at me.
"Both parties
seem to be ready. Well then, let's get started."
"Yeah, we're
ready anytime."
"We are also
ready at any time."
"Then take your
positions. Third match—begin!"
With Salis's signal,
the match began.
Both sides were in a
state of observation, and not a single person moved.
"Th-they're not
coming. What should we do?"
"I was hoping
they would come to us... but if they're not, then I guess I'll go to
them."
"Should we stay
in the back?"
"Yeah. Sorry, but
you two might not get a turn in this exchange tournament."
"Fufu, that's
perfectly fine! Go get 'em, Graham-san!"
"I want to fight
a little, but... you can go ahead!"
Now that I have their
permission, I guess I'll start my attack.
I drew my katana and
decided to finish off the two women, Zola and Sonia, first.
I swung my drawn
katana, intending to send their heads flying with a flying slash.
[Crimson Rose]
couldn't handle it, so I had assumed Zola and Sonia wouldn't be able to either,
but—.
The two of them easily
blocked it with their readied swords.
Just as I thought,
they're strong. A simple attack like that would be blocked.
"—Ooh. That really
is an incredible attack."
"I couldn't see
it, so I was surprised when I felt the impact on my hand."
"...But you can
handle it now, right?"
"Yes. It is
merely a sword strike with a long range, and the swing is large, so there is no
problem."
"We couldn't have
handled it if it were our first time seeing it, but once you know the trick,
it's easy."
"As expected of
the Zola and Sonia I had my eye on."
""Thank
you.""
The three of them were
having that conversation with a confident attitude after blocking my flying
slash.
I was originally
planning on slowly defeating all three of them while testing their strength,
but... it's a little frustrating that they think they can handle me after just
one blow.
It feels like a waste,
but I suppose I'll finish off Zola and Sonia with flying slashes.
Having decided that, I
raised the corners of my mouth slightly and readied my katana.
What I had done so far
was a simple attack aimed at the neck, but... from here on, it will be a
continuous attack.
I wonder if the two of
them, Zola and Sonia, can handle it.
First, I took aim at
Zola—and swung my katana down.
She handled the first
blow, but I immediately sent a second, and then a third slash flying,
increasing the speed with every swing of my katana.
At first, she handled
it easily while watching my swing, but as the speed increased, her reaction
slowed... and finally, a flying slash grazed Zola's arm.
Fresh blood
splattered, and Zola let out a small cry.
"The attack is...
fast! It's still getting faster—I can't handle this! Duke-sama, please be
careful!!"
Those were her last
words, as the slash I sent flying caught Zola's neck.
As her head flew into
the air, she was enveloped in particles of light and vanished from the dungeon.
"I knew from
watching the first match, but that man is truly strong. Duke-sama, what will
you do?"
"Let me see his
attack a little longer. Sonia, I'm sorry, but I need you to be a
sacrifice."
"Understood. I
will draw out as many of his attacks as I can."
Sonia stood before me
as if to protect Duke and provoked me to attack with a smile.
If this were a real
battle, I wouldn't fall for such a clear bait and would just defeat her with
magic or something, but I'm also curious to see how Duke will respond—so I
began to attack Sonia with flying slashes as well.
Perhaps because she
had watched my attack on Zola, she lasted longer than Zola, but... she failed
to block in time and was killed on the eighteenth blow.
In the blink of an
eye, only Duke was left. I thought he might be feeling helpless, but—Duke
showed a cheerful, innocent smile.
That smile was
childlike, but it didn't seem like he was bluffing, so he must have come up
with some kind of countermeasure.
It might be a bit
one-sided and boring, but... I'm curious to see how he'll respond, so I suppose
I'll try to finish him off with a flying slash.
