Can a Mob Highschooler be a Normie: Chapter 140

Mob Kousei No Ore Demo Boukensha Ni Nareba Riajuu Ni Naremasuka: Chapter #140

Episode 140: The Trial

――――The first serious armed conflict between the Yujin faction and the Solomon faction began around the time the sun reached its zenith. It ended just before sundown, with an easy victory for the Solomon faction.

The Solomon faction's victory was due to two major factors.

Firstly, the Yujin faction's morale was extremely low compared to the Solomon faction.

The discovery of the body on their own side and the disappearance of the Lie-Detection magic item, the Yujin faction members were suspicious of their own leader. In contrast, the Solomon faction, having suffered the loss of life, was fueled by anger and fear, and their morale was exceptionally high.

Secondly, there was a fundamental disparity in combat strength.

The Yujin faction, primarily equipped with the cards Yujin-san had initially distributed and perhaps some cheap D-rank cards, was outmatched by the migrants in card quality, many of whom owned C-rank cards.

This difference reflected the gap in crisis awareness between the long-time local residents, who had few dungeons nearby, and the migrants, who had moved there specifically to prepare for Angolmois.

Furthermore, the local residents had fewer young people due to ongoing aging and depopulation, meaning the settler families had more people capable of fighting.

This directly contributed to the difference in strength between their two vigilante groups.

The battle began with the local residents at a disadvantage in terms of morale, numbers, and card quality...

From the start, it was never going to be a fair fight.

Defeated in battle, Yujin-san was captured. Missing women who had been confined were discovered in the Heddon Hall House set up in the basement of his home.

This clearly established his guilt, leading to a trial—likely the first since the Third Angolmois began.

I was chosen as one of the lay judges1, representing the neutral faction.

 ――――Two days later.

The island's sole concert hall—a building disproportionately grand for this small island.

 It served as the courtroom.

Seven people stood on the platform. In the center was the defendant, Yujin Sato. To his left was Solomon, accompanied by Pruflas, serving as both prosecutor and moderator. To his right were the lay judges, including me, plus two representatives each from the Yujin and Solomon factions.

No one was willing to take on the role of defense attorney, so the defendant acted as his own defense attorney.

The judge2 was the entire audience of 500 spectators gathered here.

"――――The defendant, Yujin Sato, is charged with exploiting the chaos of Angolmois to kidnap and confine multiple women who sought his aid, and furthermore, with the murder of Emi Minamisawa and the abandonment of her body in a civilian home,"

The prosecutor Solomon read out flatly, detailing Yujin-san's crimes.

Since this island lacked a courthouse or formal judge, this was merely a mock trial.

However, even a mock trial required a formal structure.

A format that everyone could reasonably accept...

"Defendant, do you have anything to state regarding the facts presented?"

After reading the charges, Solomon looked at Yujin-san and coldly questioned him.

In a normal trial, the right to remain silent would be explained, but in this trial, that right was not recognized.

All the chosen lay judges possessed a card with [Deceit Detection] skill, and the defendant was required to answer the questions as fully as possible for the lay judges to make a proper judgment.

While silence was the defendant's right, it would severely damage the perception of the lay judges and the hundreds of audience-judges.

Needless to say, this would influence the verdict.

"...I... I..."

Yujin-san, standing on the witness stand, looked terribly worn out.

In just one night, deep dark circles had formed under his eyes, and his skin was dry.

He looked even more haggard than I did after encountering Urashima Taro.

Yujin-san's voice trembled as he spoke.

"I... why did I do such a thing..."

The venue stirred at his words, which sounded like an admission of guilt.

I, too, couldn't help but raise my eyebrows.

"You confirm this to be true?"

"...Yes,"

Yujin-san nodded, his head dropping limply.

Voices of disbelief erupted from the spectators who must have believed in his innocence: "No way..." "He's being forced to say that, isn't he...?"

 But...

Suzuka

Yes, it's not a lie.

The [Deceit Detection] skill confirmed that Yujin-san was neither lying nor being forced to say it.

"Hmm..."

When I met him again on this island, Yujin-san had certainly said he "knew nothing about the missing women."

Yet now, he’s admitting that he abducted them. Despite the obvious contradiction, the [Deceit Detection] skill wasn't reacting. Why...

"The defendant's crimes—confining innocent women and taking the life of one young girl—are extremely vicious and selfish. As these actions also served as the catalyst of this conflict, I hereby demand the death penalty."

While I was deep in thought, the trial proceeded. The prosecutor demanded the death penalty, and the proceedings moved to the lay judge questioning phase.

Here, each lay judge would question the defendant, and the answers would form the basis for discussing whether the prosecution's demand was appropriate.

The lay judges did not have the final vote, and the discussion itself did not determine the verdict, but it was a crucial part as the audience, acting as the judges, would base their judgment on the discussion, influencing their perception.

"Did you... did the defendant really do this? To such a young girl?"

"That I did it... is definitely true. But..."

"Why did the defendant do such a thing?"

"I... I don't know either..."

"How did you feel during the crime?"

"At the time... it was fun. But now, I don't understand that self..."

"Did you feel guilt for deceiving your comrades?"

"...I'm sorry."

"Next, any questions?"

As I listened to the lay judges' seemingly pointless questions and Yujin-san's rambling answers, it was suddenly my turn to ask a question.

A question, huh...

I pondered for a moment, then asked,

"Do you remember meeting me on a trip during summer vacation?"

"Huh? Ah, yes..."

Yujin-san nodded, confused by the sudden change of topic.

"Do you remember what we talked about back then—that one thing?"

"Uhh... sorry, what was it again? That thing?"

"No, never mind."

I cut off the conversation with the confused Yujin-sa — no, Yujin, and called out to Suzuka,

Suzuka, you still feel like something's off?

Yeah.

I see...

What should I do?

If my hypothesis is correct, Yujin-san is likely innocent.

There's only one way to prove it.

And it's something that can only be done right now, at this very moment.

But it's a gamble. A pretty risky one at that.

If I lost the gamble, there’s a high probability of an all-out battle between me and the Solomon faction—a battle between humans.

No, I have to assume it would happen for sure.

I don't think I’ll lose the fight, but I have no intention of using my power against humans.

If I did that, the 'something' that currently keeps me grounded would be lost, and I will lose control.

If that happens, I will choose to withdraw.

In other words, I would have to give up the safe base we had worked so hard to secure.

The chances of success are low, and the risks are high.

So, is it really worth taking action...?

"Verdict!"

But, aaah――――

"With 383 votes in favor, 19 for commutation, and 98 abstentions, the defendant is sentenced to death!"

――――If my hypothesis was correct, this verdict was simply too bitter to stomach.

...Suzuka, do it.

Got it~!

Receiving my order, Suzuka gleefully slashed at Yujin-san.

Blood sprayed across the platform as everyone in the hall watched in shock.

――――I don't have any particular proof.

There were many other possibilities, and my hypothesis was merely an assumption built upon another assumption—it was a low-probability guess.

Still, the only reason I went ahead with it was simple:

Letting an acquaintance be executed like this left too bitter an aftertaste.

If my guess was correct, the situation was utterly sickening.

 That was all...

"Well, I guess letting emotions take the lead isn't so bad sometimes,"

I muttered, grinning as I confirmed I had won the gamble based on the sight before me.

"! What do you think you're doing?!"

Solomon shouted, his face stern, glaring at me amidst the audience's uproar and confusion.

I calmly pointed behind him and replied,

"That's my line. ...Why is that guy injured when I attacked Yujin-san?"

Where I pointed, Pruflas was bleeding, its chest gashed by a diagonal cut.

There was only one reason Pruflas would take damage from an attack intended for Yujin-san:

Feedback. The man standing on the platform—the current ‘Yujin-san’—was Pruflas's true master.

"...This, what is this? Why are you hurt...?"

Solomon, turning to see the bleeding Pruflas, stared in shock.

Just as I thought—he doesn’t realize the truth. It made sense; otherwise, [Deceit Detection] skill would have responded.

" That's because the ‘Yujin-san’ standing there is the real Solomon."

At my words, every pair of eyes in the hall turned toward ‘Yujin-san’.

The fake Yujin, his earlier look of haggardness completely gone, stood expressionless, like a doll.

"He is, the real me...?"

The stunned Solomon stood frozen. I nodded

"Yes, you were simply made to believe you were Solomon ――Yujin-san."

The moment Suzuka mentioned that something was 'off', my first thought was the possibility of a power superior to [Deceit Detection] — an Authority — being used for deception.

Authorities related to illusion or deceit were closer to rewriting existence than simple transformation, making them undetectable by [Deceit Detection] skill.

Upon realizing this, I immediately looked up Solomon's 72 Pillars to see if there was any devil with that kind of Authority, and I immediately found one that fit the bill.

――――Ose. A devil that brought madness and delusion to humans, possessing the Authority to transform people into other forms without the victim realizing it.

Not only does this Authority can alter appearance, but it also rewrites self-perception, so it could easily bypass interrogation by [Deceit Detection].

Unlike ordinary illusions or transformation skills, the effect persisted even after Spiritual Recurrence was undone, likely due to the nature of the Authorithy that can rewrite existence itself.

However, two questions remained if I were to attribute everything to Ose's Authority.

First, when did Ose manage to use the transformation Authority on Yujin-san, who had always been protected by a card barrier since Angolmois began?

How did Ose rewrite the perception of Solomon himself, its own master?

The first question could be explained by cleverly finding a brief gap, but the second was fundamentally wrong.

The exercise of an Authority at a level capable of rewriting the master's perception should be considered an attack on the master, which shouldn't normally be possible, even if the master wished it.

A card capable of harming its own master, something that normally is impossible…

I knew of one such existence: a Cursed Card.

If it were a Cursed Card with its shackles fully removed, it could be active outside the dungeon even before Angolmois.

Before Angolmois, it would have been easy to attack Yujin-san—who wasn't protected by a card barrier—steal his cards and appearance, and take his place... It would also have been easy to sow discord between the migrants and the local residents.

Pruflas was, after all, a devil that sowed discord and deception and incited war.

It's highly likely that Pruflas was involved in the pre-Angolmois conflict between the local residents and migrants on this island—even if not entirely responsible...

Of course, this was all my speculation.

There was no guarantee that Pruflas’s Spiritual Recurrence was Ose, nor that it was a Cursed Card.

The entire hypothesis was full of holes, built on layers of assumptions, and was ultimately just a reverse-calculation of ‘the most sickening possible scenario’.

 In other words――――

"Aww, man, how boring. I was so close to making them kill their own protector with their own hands..."

This was a truly diabolical scenario: after committing all sorts of atrocities in the guise of fake Yujin, Ose would undo the swap and have the innocent Yujin-san executed by the people of this island, who knew nothing.

Right now, Pruflas transformed into the devil with the leopard's head and the body of a young woman: Ose.

For a moment, Solomon and Yujin-san's forms seemed to blur, then they swapped places. With a thud, the real Yujin-san collapsed heavily to the ground.

Immediately, Suzuka grabbed the real Yujin-san by the scruff of his neck and dragged him over to me.

Ose ignored this and walked over to the real Solomon, her master, and embraced him, wrapping her arms around him like a snake.

The sight of Ose, with her sensual body from the neck down, hugging the young Solomon was somehow erotic.

"You, what exactly is your goal?"

I asked Ose, who was rubbing her cheek against the doll-like Solomon.

"Nn~? To kill time... and to grant Master's wish, I suppose?"

“Wish?”

"My master, you see, he wants to be a king. Ahaha, isn't that cute? Even though he's not cut out for it at all."

Ose said, stroking Solomon's cheek with a mixture of mockery and affection.

"But isn't a good devil supposed to grant their master's wishes as best as they could? So, I decided to grant it... in my own favorite way, you see."

Just then, my cards waiting outside the hall rushed over to me.

It was the full team, leaving only Athena behind with Ai for safety just in case.

 Seeing them, Ose sighed disappointedly,

"But well, I guess this is as far we go.  ...My foolish, adorable master, we'll be together forever, won't we?"

"Huh!?"

With a sickening *CRUNCH!*, Ose chomped down on Solomon's head.

"Kyaaaaaaaa!" "Uwaaaah!" "Hiiii!"

While the audience, who had been watching the situation with bated breath, screamed, Ose devoured Solomon's entire body in an instant.

Simultaneously, the oppressive aura emanating from Ose skyrocketed.

It reached a level that rivaled A-rank Irregular Encounters like Urashima Taro or the Pied Piper of Hamelin.

 Renge murmured faintly,

This is bad...

What do you mean?

I asked, wondering if she knew something. Renge was uncharacteristically hesitant, then sighed in resignation and answered,

Cards and monsters with their shackles removed can dramatically increase their power temporarily by consuming a soul that meets a certain condition... especially their master’s. For a deity, it would be a martyr or a zealot; for a devil, it's probably...

"A contract with a soul as the price..."

Renge nodded silently at my realization.

I'll set aside the reason Renge kept that silent until now—I can guess... But yeah, this is definitely bad.

We can probably win the fight easily enough, but...

I glanced at the spectators rushing toward the exits.

Can we defeat her while protecting them? In fact, at this rate, the spectators might end up killing each other in the stampede.

Damn it, leaving Athena behind turned out to be a miscalculation.

"A ha ha! I won't give you time to think, you know~!”

Ose instantly summoned nearly thirty subordinates.

Shit! The Legion Summoning!

Eliza, Yuki, Mea!

In response to my call, Eliza and the others immediately activated [World of Frozen Moonlight]... but,

"What?!"

For some reason, the subordinates Ose summoned did not disappear.

“Ahaha, too bad! These guys have been given souls, so they won't disappear~!"

 Ose laughed delightedly.

Souls? ...Can she take the souls of the people she killed, too? No way, could this entire conflict be for that purpose!?

Fortunately, the summoned devils didn't seem to be able to summon more subordinates, but each of them felt as strong as a B-rank.

Summon our subordinates, too! Dress’s group, use [Feast of Destruction, Slaughter, and Victory]! And Eliza!

I gave Eliza a look, signaling her to use her trump card.

Eliza, in her jester's outfit, nodded quietly, transformed the flute in her hand into a large scythe, and vanished.

The next moment, she appeared behind Ose and swung her scythe down with great force.

This was the reason the Pied Piper of Hamelin was called the Master Killer: Teleportation and Absolute Attack skills.

She learned to use them during our journey so far.

“Ooh!?”

Eliza's strike was a complete surprise, aimed to slice Ose clean in half from the head down―――― but simultaneously, a nearby subordinate devil was somehow sliced in two instead and fell.

Ose, who should have been bisected, was somehow unharmed, and she swung her arm toward Eliza behind her.

Eliza evaded the strike with Teleportation and returned to my side.

My apologies, I failed.

It looks like she has the ability to make her subordinate devils take damage in her place.

The Absolute Attack skill pierced through any defensive skill and nullified even durability skills like [Knowledge of Survival]. Despite this, the fact that the damage was shouldered by another meant that it must be a skill that took over the Lost state itself, like the one Karkinos3 possessed.

Eliza's scythe certainly caused Ose to be Lost, but she pulled off a pseudo-resurrection right after with her subordinate. It was an answer to Absolute Attack.

Since it wasn't a skill a normal Ose had, it was likely a True Skill evolution. Or maybe the subordinate devils' skills changed after they were given souls.

If they were the standard subordinates, they should have vanished the moment Ose became Lost and wouldn't be able to substitute for it. This, combined with the fact that they didn't disappear with the activation of [World of Frozen Moonlight], strongly suggested that those devils had lost their ‘subordinate/dependent’ attribute.

In any case, we can't deliver the finishing blow until we’ve annihilated all the surrounding devils. This is troublesome.

"You have some scary skills, huh~? I'd better restock,"

Ose muttered this and summoned new subordinates.

Ose's Legion Summoning is only supposed to be able to summon thirty devils a day... No way, can it be that she can summon as many as the souls she devoured? Just how many souls had she devoured during this conflict?

No, right now, it's more pressing that she can restock the souls!

After confirming that the subordinates on site were sufficient in number, I gave instructions to Renge,

Renge! We'll settle this quickly with the Rakshasas!

Roger!

Renge transformed into Kishimojin and, using the subordinates on the field as sacrifices, summoned a horde of Rakshasas.

The Rakshasas, possessing [Insanity-clad] and [Mutual Destruction], had overwhelmingly greater destructive power than the subordinates summoned by Mea and the others.

This should allow us to annihilate Ose's subordinates whose stock would be depleted.

 My judgment, however――――

"Ahaha~...!"

――――was a mistake.

A shiver of dread ran down my spine at Ose's gleeful laugh.

No, way...!?

Just as a terrible premonition crossed my mind, a glowing crown appeared on Ose's head.

At that moment, the movement of the Rakshasas, which had been about to pounce on the devils, instantly froze. They slowly turned to face us.

! The control has been seized!

Subordinate Plunder!?

This is bad... Bad, bad, bad!!!

Fighting the Rakshasas in this situation, without Athena, is too dangerous!

Furthermore, the subordinate devils, now free of obstruction, began attacking the audience――――

Master! Use my [Spiritual Recurrence]!

Suzuka's voice snapped me out of it.

That's right, Suzuka's [Spiritual Recurrence]!

Suzuka!

Yes! Honestly, I've been waiting for this!

Suzuka, with an unusually confident grin, transformed herself into an A-rank Oni (demon) deity.

Two blood-red horns rapidly grew from her forehead, while her red hair darkened to a pitch-black that felt almost evil.

Her pristine blue attire was replaced by blood-stained crimson armor, revealing a menacing yet alluring figure of a Great Oni.

The massive presence that shook the air caused the fleeing audiences, and even the attacking subordinate devils and Rakshasas, to stop and look at Suzuka.

"You lot, to whom do you point your swords?"

Speaking in a rough, dignified tone completely unlike the usual Suzuka, she clapped her hands, producing a sharp sound.

In that instant, the surrounding scenery warped, centered on her.

Before we knew it, we found ourselves in a mountain reeking of thick blood.

Around us were only Ose and her subordinates; the audiences were gone.

And the Rakshasas, whose control had previously been seized, were kneeling before Suzuka with their heads bowed low.

――――The skill activated was one of the five inborn skills possessed by Ibaraki-dōji, [Mount Ōe4 Manifestation].

This skill that manifested Mount Ōe, said to have been the stronghold of Shuten-dōji and his followers.

Mount Ōe had the effect of stealing enemy’s Oni-attribute subordinates and granting the [Insanity-clad] buff to Oni-attributed allies. Additionally, within Mount Ōe, Oni-attribute subordinates no longer disappear over time, and their maximum number depended on the user's combat power.

The Rakshasas were Oni deities and had a full-fledged Oni-attribute. With this effect, Suzuka nullified the opponent's Subordinate Plunder skill and allowed us to instantly steal back the Rakshasas whose control had just been seized.

"Attack, my minions!"

At Suzuka's command, the Rakshasa sprang into action and pounced on Ose's subordinate devils (a sight which caused Renge to look somewhat conflicted).

Furthermore, Suzuka began summoning her own subordinates.

First to appear were four large Oni.

This was the [the Four Divine Kings] skill, which summoned the Big Four under Shuten-dōji: Hoshikuma-dōji (Star Bear Demon), Kuma-dōji (Bear Demon), Torakuma-dōji (Tiger Bear Demon), and Kane-dōji (Iron Demon). Hoshikuma-dōji and the others possessed B-rank equivalent power and can be revived infinitely as long as Ibaraki-dōji is present.

 Next, countless Hashihime appeared.

The skill for this was [Oni of Ichijō Modoribashi Bridge5], which contained the power of the Hashihime—who was often identified with Ibaraki-dōji—allowing the user to summon Hashihime as subordinates.

The summoned Hashihime were of the infinite-summoning type, yet they possessed [Highest-level Dependent Body] skill, and their summoning speed was extremely fast. Their deployment power rivaled a Legion Summoning.

With these two Subordinate Summoning abilities and the effect of Mount Ōe, Ibaraki-dōji was able to unleash a numerical superiority that combined both quality and quantity.

Every time Ose killed a Rakshasa and [Mutual Destruction] activated, a subordinate devil of Ose's was instantly blown away.

Ose attempted to summon new subordinates, but her stock quickly ran out.

It seemed the number of souls she held was not very large after all.

Finally, with the last subordinate devil killed, Suzuka's blade pierced straight through Ose's chest.

Ose spat up blood and said....

"Aww~, is it over? Well, I guess that's fine. Master, we'll be together next time too..."

She lovingly stroked her stomach, and then vanished...

"A~ah~... tired."

Simultaneously, Suzuka's [Spiritual Recurrence] come undone, and she collapsed backward onto the floor with a thud.

As Mount Ōe faded away like a mist and we returned to being in an empty concert hall, we rushed over to her and showed our appreciation,

"Good job. You were brilliant this time."

"Hehee, right?"

 Suzuka smiled, satisfied.

She seemed incredibly happy that she was able to play such an active role with her long-desired Ibaraki-dōji Spiritual Recurrence.

However, her face was pale, and her breathing was shallow.

As expected, ‘reverting’ to A-rank still imposed a heavy burden on her.

Still, she looked less strained than the time she nearly passed out, and the duration of the skill was somewhat longer.

Going forward, the cooldown period should shorten as she uses it more often.

"Master, this."

Eliza picked something up from where Ose had been and handed it to me.

"This is..."

 It was a card.

A strange card with only Ose's illustration and one skill written on it, with no combat power listed.

 It simply read:

 ――――True Subordinate Enhancement.

[Race] Ibaraki-dōji (Suzuka)

[Combat Power] 2150 (Initial Combat Power 1200 + Growth 750 + Spiritual Recurrence 200)

[Inborn Skills]

• Right-Hand of the Oni Chieftain: This skill grants Ibaraki-dōji powers of theft and deceit on the level of a divine Authority, despite not being a true deity.

• Mount Ōe Manifestation: This skill deploys Mount Ōe, the legendary stronghold of Shuten-dōji and his followers. It has the effect of stealing opponent's Oni-attribute subordinates while granting [Insanity-clad] to the allied Oni-attribute subordinates. Within Mount Ōe, Oni-attribute subordinates no longer disappear over time, and their maximum number is dependent on the user's combat power.

• The Four Divine Kings: This skill summons Shuten-dōji's Four Divine Kings: Hoshikuma-dōji, Kuma-dōji, Torakuma-dōji, and Kane-dōji. They each possess power equivalent to a B-rank and can be revived infinitely as long as Ibaraki-dōji is present.

• Oni of Ichijō Modoribashi Bridge: This skill contains the power of Hashihime, who are often identified with Ibaraki-dōji, and allows them to be summoned as subordinates. The summoned Hashihime are of the infinite-summoning type, yet they possess [Highest-level Dependent Body] skill, and their summoning speed is extremely fast.

• Remnants of the Oni: This skill originates from the legend that Ibaraki-dōji was the only Oni to escape during the slaying of Shuten-dōji. As long as Shuten-dōji is present as an ally, Ibaraki-dōji becomes immortal.

[Tips] Analysis of Normal Ose's Stats and True Skills

[Race] Ose

[Combat Power] 700

[Inborn Skills]

・Solomon's 57th Great Devil: Allows the use of Ose's Authority of Deceit, Education, and Treasure Hunting as the Great President of Hell.

(Deceit: A general term for the Authority that warps and falsifies things from their original form. Broadly includes the Authority of Beasts, but the Authority of Deceit cannot rewrite ‘function’. It is close to rewriting existence and is thus undetectable by the [Deceit Detection] skill.

(Education: A lower version of the Authority of Knowledge. Allows searching for widely known knowledge. Its advantage over the Authority of Knowledge is that it can implant the searched knowledge into the master. However, the knowledge does not stay long-term.)

・Army of the False King: Allows summoning of C-rank equivalent devils who also possess subordinate-summoning ability. Can be used to summon up to thirty devils per day.

・False Crown: Can materialize a false crown that makes the wearer a ruler. This casts a Level-up spell on all allies, doubling their stats. Can only be used once per day (lasts one hour).

 ・Subordinate Enhancement

 ~~From Maro's Memo~~

The Ose who had True Skill evolution demonstrated peculiar Subordinate Summoning and Subordinate Plunder skills.

Since the summoned subordinates didn't disappear even with Subordinate Sealing, it's likely they had lost their subordinate/dependent attribute... Based on her words, "have been given souls," there's even a possibility that they were turned into genuine monsters.

Additionally, their combat power was B-rank class, and they possessed Damage Substitution skill that they shouldn't normally have.

Since Absolute Attacks even penetrate defensive skill damage takeovers, that Damage Substitution must be one like Karkinos's, "takes over the Lost state itself."

In other words, Ose was successfully brought down to Lost state by Eliza at one point, and at that moment, the subordinates should have vanished, making substitution by a subordinate impossible.

Considering this, it’s highly likely that those subordinates were genuine monsters independent of Ose.

It is unclear which skill granted these abilities, and the mysterious card Ose left behind must be handled with extreme caution.
