  • “Put an end to the breath of evil. Acquire the courage to execute justice.”

I looked down at the Tome of the Evil Dragon and steeled my resolve. I must become strong. Perhaps the reason Brother Georg tried so fiercely to make me a warrior was that he knew of the fate Uncle Morak spoke of.

I must learn how to deal with villains. To surpass my brother, I need Carral Hez. To protect Carral, I need the resolve to defeat villains.

I decided to execute the self-righteous condemnation that Evil Dragon Zirant desires. First, I searched for a villain. Someone who evokes not a shred of sympathy. The lowest kind of existence, deserving of death. I looked for the lowest of the low, whose disappearance would be celebrated by all.

However, if I did this normally, I would be traced. So, I relied on that woman. Sigrun of the Black Horns. When I asked for her whereabouts at the Adventurer's Guild, they said she was scheduled to return to this spot today.

“Ohh! Shinza! I’m happy you came to see me; you’ve fallen for me after all!”

“I suppose so; your valor is captivating. But more importantly, I have a favor to ask.”

I took Sigrun outside and moved to a dimly lit back table in the tavern next door. She seemed to sense something was different about me. She was strangely quiet.

“Well, drink. It’s easier to talk if you drink.”

“Maybe so. ...Phew, so, there is something I want to ask you.”

I downed half the wooden cup of poured ale. Naturally, it was lukewarm and bitter; sweet pastries might suit my taste better.

“I am looking for a villain. The lowest kind of scum, someone whom no one would care if they were killed. Don't ask for the reason; with this, the debt from before is settled.”

Shinza, you’re surprisingly dangerous... But fine. If that settles the score, I’ll tell you. A villain who deserves to die.”

Possessing such valor, Sigrun was bound to be knowledgeable. I figured that placing oneself in numerous battles meant seeing mountains of trash.

“In the southern entertainment district, there’s a bandit. His alias is Dags. Go to the church in the back alley. If you mention my name, they ought to tell you exactly where and when he tends to show up..”

“...That helps.”

“He’s scum who targets only children and the elderly. But he’s hard to catch, and since his victims are only the poor, the army won’t make a move.”

“I see.”

It was convenient. An opponent the law cannot judge, a villain the army won't try to capture. If it is that kind of lowest evil, then even the self-righteousness of private punishment holds a great cause. Dags the bandit will become the sacrifice for my growth. I decided that.

“But still, I didn’t think you were this kind of man, Shinza.”

“Sorry to disappoint you, but it is absolutely necessary.”

“What are you saying? It’s the opposite! Shinza, you truly are beautiful. No, rather, let me ask you. Dags is trash unworthy of life. If you kill him for us, I’ll feel great starting tomorrow.”

This might give Sigrun some leverage over me. But I can trust her; her view of life and death, as well as her ethics, are unique. If anything, she gave a push to what I have to do.

She knew. That evils exist in this world that cannot be dealt with by law or morals.

“Want help?”

“I appreciate it, but there is no meaning unless I do it alone. Let’s meet again.”

“Yeah, it would be good to take the same quest together next time! Here is my address, come visit!”

She really is a strange woman. She answered my strange inquiry without suspicion and handed me a note saying to come play at her house.

It was already evening, but before my nerve cooled, I headed to the church in the back alley of the entertainment district. The priest was surprised by my visit and Sigrun's name, but he told me the truth of what was happening in the vicinity.

He told me the address of a mother whose child was killed, and a son whose old mother was killed. The truths told by these victims did not befit the beautiful and glamorous Imperial Capital. The shadows of the glorious city were deep, repulsive, and stagnant.

Villains are running rampant in the darkness of the Imperial Capital. Yet no one tries to catch them. There was even a hint that they thought it served as population control for the poor. The more I listened, the more my hesitation vanished. I cannot understand why such sinful existences are allowed to run free.

From that night on, I waited quietly in the back alleys of the dim entertainment district, letting my anger build.

Waiting for a villain deserving of condemnation to fall into the net.

Self-righteous justice, a duty that must be fulfilled even if it ignores the law. I am Ashley, the Seventh Son of the Imperial Family, the non-existent son shunned by the Emperor. As a member of the Imperial Family, as a non-existent Prince, I will carry out the justice my brothers cannot.

“Hey, you beggar bastard... Oi! I'm talking to you! Come on, I'll give you something good, turn this way!”

Gotcha. Unfortunately, the target had taken the bait. In the darkness, a dull-colored knife was thrust at me, faintly reflecting the pale light.

“It's your grave. A man whose mother you killed, a mother whose child you killed—they were wishing for your death. Curse if you want to curse, from the bottom of a hole in the entertainment district where no one will notice.”

Thus, I obtained the power of the Shovel that pierces through anything, no questions asked, even stone pavement.

Are you satisfied with this, Zirant? I will likely continue to carry out self-righteousness in the palm of your hand. We are accomplices. Because you instigated me to slaughter evil and execute justice.
