“WOOOOOH! Shinza! Shinza! Shinza!!”
It was a complete victory with zero casualties. Everyone in
the Vigilante Corps was boiling over with excitement at the miraculous war
results. They were opponents who had made them suffer bitter defeats until
today. It’s no wonder their enthusiastic chanting won’t stop after hearing that
the leader, the Hobgoblin, was slain.
“Thank you Shinza! Thanks to ya, it looks like we’ll
manage somehow!”
“My dog was done in by them too... Ah, I feel so relieved, Shinza!”
“He’s a god! He’s a man of miracles! Yer the savior of the
village, ya are!”
While catching my breath, I received numerous words of joy.
I, who was the abomination of the Imperial Family, am being praised by the
people.
Even though I had given up, thinking I could never become
like Georg, I had become the "small hero" the guild
receptionist spoke of. Though calling me a god is taking it too far.
“Hey, say something, Shinza! Why are you resuming construction
in this situation?!”
“Kachua, that’s rude to Shinza-dono. But well,
I also feel like I’d like him to celebrate with us just a little more...”
Now that the enemy has retreated, it’s our chance. I want to
perfect the defenses before they regroup. Again, silently, silently, I began
the work of extending the moat.
“Sorry, but I’ll save that for after I finish the work I
still have left. I’m counting on you for the lookout.”
“Shinza is strong, but he’s a super weirdo...”
When I start digging holes, I inevitably become reticent. I
lose sight of my surroundings, and my consciousness gets buried in my beloved
digging.
Doing this relieves me. I feel at ease just digging holes
like this. I even felt sometimes that digging the earth itself was my life, my
role.
When digging holes, something always comes out. That said,
here it’s just stones and withered roots; nothing significant is found.
In some cases, buried jewels can be found in the earth, but
there is no sign of anything like that. No, as I proceeded further with the
work, I dug up a potato again. Not a yam; this is probably a type of cassava.
It’s the kind that gives you a stomachache if eaten raw.
Though most potatoes are like that.
“What’s wrong, Shinza? What is that?”
“Found a potato. I think this is cassava; it’s quite tasty
if boiled or steamed.”
I threw the dug-up potato toward Lucky-san atop the
moat. It seems I confused him again. I didn't intend to do anything strange,
though...
“A potato again... This is the first time I’ve seen such a
commoner-like hero. ...Oi, steam this and bring it here!”
“Fu, that’s how it should be. Mu, there was another
one. Take care of this one too. From the looks of it, there seem to be more;
I’ll search at random.”
“Wait Shinza, isn’t the objective shifting to potato
digging?!”
“Sorry, as an Excavator, I love potatoes.”
“No, that makes no sense!”
The construction meandered in an unexpected direction due to
searching for potatoes, but once the potatoes stopped being found, I returned
to the world of no-mind. However, it seems a large amount was buried there, and
apparently, a small Imoni (potato soup) party was happening inside the
defensive wall.
The ones seasoned with the sea salt I brought were carried
by Kachua’s hands and even stuffed into my mouth while I was engrossed
in work. Delicious. As expected, potatoes are the best. I wonder if there
aren’t any others sleeping somewhere.
Then night fell, and the Goddess fleeing from the Sun God
rose high in the sky. Simply put, it was late at night. When I suddenly came to
my senses, I was connecting one moat to another. While digging, I had circled
all the way around to the South Gate, marking the completion of the moat
surrounding the village.
“Oi Shinza-dono! Are you okay?!”
And then I collapsed backward onto the ground at the bottom
of the moat. The only ones keeping me company were Lucky-san and the
gatekeeper on lookout. The others are, well, country folk; they go to bed
early.
“I’m tired...”
“You say that now... I have a room prepared at the
Village Chief’s house. Let’s go back after you rest a bit.”
I sat up and borrowed Lucky-san’s shoulder. Somehow
climbing out of the moat, we had the gate opened and walked through the
sleeping village.
“To think you completed it all alone... Listen well!
Everyone, it’s finally done!! Shinza-dono has completed a deep and wide
moat! We are safe now!!”
“Oi... it’s the middle of the night.”
When we arrived at the plaza where the residences were
gathered, the village bunch was still awake. To them—no, Lucky-san
shouted loudly so it could be heard even inside the houses.
Then, everyone from children to adults woke up and came out of
the houses, directing words of gratitude one after another to me, who was
wretchedly borrowing a shoulder. "No need to worry about them getting
inside anymore." "Yer an incredible person," and so on. I was
told things like that.
Then, the receptionist’s words floated up again. Certainly,
I am now a small hero. I was able to think from the bottom of my heart that it
was good to take this job.
After washing off the sweat and dirt from my feet with cold
well water, I intruded into the guest room of the Village Chief’s house and lay
down on the bedding. Only then was I finally able to remove my lenses and
gloves, returning not to a hero, but to the original deformed abomination. It
looks like I'll be able to sleep soon.
Eventually, my fatigued body seized control of my
consciousness. A sense of accomplishment and tiredness summoned an ideal
restful sleep, and I fell into a deep sleep like mud.
