[WN] Emperor's Seventh Son : 5 - 6

5-6

The Strange Tome Says "Become Light"

Translator : PolterGlast

Following that, I began additional construction on the moat. What I’m doing is simple. Just expanding it into a deeper and wider moat to perfect the village’s defenses.

Well, even if I explain it, it’s just boring, monotonous work. Behind my immersion, the villagers, having gained water, were united and proceeding with preparations for interception.

They will definitely come. Once the village is fortified, they can never plunder again. From their perspective, it could be said to be their last chance.

Then, before evening, perhaps having finished reorganizing on their side as well, the Goblin army appeared again, this time in front of the West Gate. As soon as the report reached me, who was doing construction on the East Gate side, I ran through the village hurriedly with my escort, Lucky-san.

Shinza-dono. It’s late to say this, but for the guild request, yesterday’s war results were more than enough. The moment you took care of fifty-some Goblins and a Hobgoblin in that battle, you could have gone home. You are the second adventurer to do this much for the village.”

“I doubt it, but don't tell me the first one was Sigrun of the Black Horns?”

“You know of Sigrun-sama?!”

“...Maybe I shouldn't have asked. Yeah, well, we're acquaintances. I guess we both think the other is weird, but we get along okay.”

“I’ll hear the rest later. Shinza-dono, so what is the plan?”

“You command from inside, I charge. That is all.”

With a moat, it becomes difficult for the dwarfed Goblins to breach the defensive wall. So they primitively chose a stone-throwing strategy. They threw gathered pebbles at us who were holed up.

At the same time, it seems some of them are sticking to the wall from the bottom of the moat, trying to breach it by using their comrades as stepping stones. I went around obstructing that futile struggle after crossing the defensive wall. Running around the bottom of the moat, I crushed the Goblins clinging to the wall.

Our strategy is the same as last time. Lure them until the Hobgoblin reveals itself, and once it appears, snipe it all at once.

Until that time came, I, the decoy, simply rampaged at the bottom of the moat.

“Found it! I’m going to let it get closer before I shoot! Shinza, it’s heading your way!”

As expected, her eyes are good. Kachua discovered the target. When I climbed out of the moat, indeed, it was charging towards me. Moreover, it’s not just one; there are two. One of them is remarkably huge.

“Shoot!!”

That is also the same as before. A barrage of arrows assailed the Hobgoblins guided to the moth trap. The one on the right died instantly from it; the one on the left survived with just one arrow each piercing its shoulder and abdomen, using a fellow Goblin as a shield.

“It’s running! Shoot, shoot, shoot!”

Further arrows aimed at the target, but the dwarfed imps made themselves shields to protect their master. If let go, they will attack us again. Even if I have to chase it deep, I want to end its life here.

So even though it went out of arrow range, I chased it, knowing the danger. Striking down the swarm of minions trying to block my path, I plunged into the forest, hot on the heels of that massive, conspicuous giant.

The risk paid off, and I managed somehow. Well, as a result, I was surrounded by the Hobgoblin bleeding blue blood from its wounds and the Goblins following it. Their target is me; it was a natural judgment on their part.

“Let’s settle this. Cursed sub-race, you should be reborn as a human next time.”

It surely won't get through, but I say it anyway. Then they also said something, just like me. However, our language systems seem completely different, and conversation with them doesn't hold up. No matter how much scholars tried to decipher it, apparently, their words didn't constitute words.

I don't know if they gained confidence from the encirclement, but I knocked away the Goblins swarming me. Dodging the Great Maul unleashed by the Hobgoblin's giant body by a hair's breadth, I scraped away the ground where he would step next with my Shovel.

Success. He fell forward and exposed his defenseless back to me. Knowing the danger, I jumped onto that back, and then thrust the Shovel aiming for the artery in the neck.

Violent blood spray rose, and the giant monster rampaged. Intending to take me down with him, he swung the Great Maul down again, so I severed its wooden handle.

Perhaps due to blood loss, he finally exhausted his strength. His movements dulled. So for the final touch, I whacked his profile with the Shovel, and the giant body sank to the earth.

As expected, Georg is far stronger. When I stepped onto the Hobgoblin's corpse without even disordering my breathing, the demihumans who lost their master immediately lost their aggression and fled with screams at once.

Then, noticing new footsteps, it was Vigilante Corps Captain Lucky-san. He seemed surprised, eyes wide open, at the corpse I trampled on for intimidation.

Certainly, well, looking at it calmly, it is strangely huge for a Hobgoblin...

“Did you slay it... the Hobgoblin Leader...?!”

“Huh. So that's why it was so freakishly big... I don't really get it, but is it sort of like a fish that gets a new name when it grows up?”

According to the story I heard later, it was a special individual called a Hobgoblin Leader that had grown older, which even Sigrun had to give up on defeating because it never came to the front.

Well anyway, the Tome of the Evil Dragon shone, and I glowed pale blue as usual. With this, the reason to stay in this village is gone. It’s regrettable, but maybe it’s time.
