The Dragon Says It Is Proof of the Emperor

The next morning, sent off by the villagers, I stood at the East Gate of Corin Village. I felt a twinge of loneliness, but there was no longer any reason for me to stay.
People threw words of gratitude and praise at me one after another, reluctant to part, but since I had heard it many times, I was getting bored of listening to it. Last night? Of course, I slept with Kachua. The cold was severe, so it helped.
“Shinza-dono, it’s too rural to easily ask you to come again, but—if you pass nearby, please stop by again. By then, we will rebuild the village and give you a proper welcome.”
“Savior-sama! Great Hero Shinza-sama! This is a tribute from the village, please take it!”
What the Village Chief handed me was a hemp bag. Peeking inside, there were over a dozen pieces of amber, large and small. Amber is fossilized tree sap. Due to its brittle nature, it is cheap as a gem, but I think it is simple and beautiful.
“Everyone gathered them from their homes because they wanted to thank Shinza! Even though you did so much for us, sorry we can’t pay money at all...”
“Rather, is it okay for me to accept this?”
“Of course it is! If we’re in a pinch again, please come!”
Thanking them, I put the hemp bag in my bag. Inside, it is also packed with honey purchased in Corin Village, truffles, and small crystals. If I sell them in the Imperial Capital, it should amount to a decent sum of money.
“Oh, soiya soiya, I forgot! Won’t you take Kachua with you!”
“Wha—What are you spouting, Village Chief!? Don't you dare decide that on your own!”
I was starting to miss Jii’s face; come, let’s go home. That’s what I was thinking, but the Village Chief started saying something outrageous. It is natural for her uncle, Lucky-san, to protest. The awareness of human rights is thin here...
“Shinza-dono has taken a liking to Kachua. Now, go ahead, go ahead, Savior-sama! If anything happens again, please come back!”
“Village Chief, you... you, as a man, are-!!”
“It’s fine. I... If Shinza says he wants to do that, I don’t mind... Besides, I wanted to go to the Imperial Capital from the start!”
I just want to go home already. Yet, the villagers began arguing noisily. Divided into pros and cons, they made a huge ruckus ignoring my opinion.
“Sorry, but I can’t look after her. I’ll accept just the sentiment. But let’s see, if you ever come to the Imperial Capital, leave a message at the guild. I’ll at least give you a sightseeing tour.”
I directed the latter half toward the black-haired female Archer. Then, since it would be troublesome if they grumbled any further, I started walking toward the opened gate.
“Wait!”
“I won’t wait. —Nuoh?!”
However, Kachua jumped onto my back. Sticking to my back, she wrapped her legs around my stomach and clung to me.
“Take me with you! I’ll take care of you, Shinza!”
“The sentiment makes me happy, but I can’t do that.”
“Why not! I want to go to the Imperial Capital! I don’t want to end my life in a village like this!”
I cannot take her. I stopped walking and thought about what to do. I understand the feeling of wanting to fulfill a dream, of wanting to leave a boring village. I even want to help with that. But I can’t.
“Please, Shinza!”
“Kachua! Don’t be selfish to Shinza-dono!”
I hesitated a little there, but I carried Kachua on my back up to the front of the gate so that we were out of people’s sight. After that, I removed my glove and simply showed her the terrifying arm that made Father despair. A small scream rose from Kachua’s throat.
“Shinza, that hand, what happened...?!”
“I was born like this. Thanks to it, I am thoroughly hated by my relatives, and I am in a very dangerous position. I don’t want to involve you.”
I decided to put the glove back on immediately. It would be troublesome if the others saw it. However, Kachua’s hand touched my white arm, and—unbelievably—she held my hand.
Those who see this usually fear infection first. To touch it so suddenly was a sight I could hardly believe. Aside from Brother Georg and Sister Atomina, she is the first to hold my hand without asking for the circumstances.
“Something like this isn’t scary at all! More importantly, it’s white and cool! Besides, Shinza really was a messenger of God!”
“Is that so. Surely Zirant will be pleased too.”
“Zirant—wait, who?”
“A dragon who likes peeping. Even now, she is watching us from somewhere.”
It was probably a reply that didn’t make much sense. Kachua, unable to understand, fell silent for a while, but she didn’t try to leave my back.
“Is that Shinza’s God?” “Yeah, she always watches over me. A weird fellow who demands justice from me and always affirms that what I did was right.”
If not for Zirant, I wouldn’t have come to this village either. No matter how much the book incited me, I wouldn’t have had the resolve to execute justice. It’s a strange story, but precisely because that observer exists, I can stick to justice even now without excessive anguish.
“Then, Shinza really is God’s messenger! Because I heard from Sigrun-neesan! Long ago, you know, there was a gentle Dragon God! Apparently, she saved the Horned Species and everyone from a bad God!”
“Is that Dragon God’s name Zirant?”
“...No, I think it was a different name, though.”
“I see, but that is intriguing. I’ll try asking Sigrun directly next time. Well then, Kachua, if you’re going to be an adventurer, polish your sword skills too.”
“I’ll definitely go! I’ll definitely go to the Imperial Capital where Shinza is! I’ll overtake you right away, so wash your neck and wait!”
“It’s good to have something to strive for. Understood, I’ll be waiting patiently.”
Thus, I lowered Kachua from my back and departed Corin Village. Having defeated the boss of bosses called the Hobgoblin Leader, it is now a fortress itself with perfect defenses.
Corin Village is safe now. Harboring a feeling of heartfelt pride, I stepped onto the road toward the Imperial Capital, where I should return.
Leaving Corin Village, I returned to the regional city from before just past noon and boarded a shared carriage. The way there is fine, but the return trip is boring. Tired of talking with fellow passengers, I fell into a deep sleep.
