Chapter 135
The Mansion
Translator : PolterGlast
It was already clean right from the entrance of the Old
Abandoned Road, but the deeper we went, the more it had evolved; something
resembling a large mansion had been built. Bane likely had this built as
well, but seeing it go this far makes me a little scared of what exactly he
intends to start.
"It was a pile of trash until just recently, yet now
there stands a magnificent mansion!"
"Did they build it while we were in the Royal Capital?
I didn't know monsters could do things like this!"
"I didn't know they could construct buildings either.
Though, it's more likely that Bane is special rather than monsters in
general."
I suppose if one possesses solid knowledge and can issue
accurate instructions, building a mansion is possible. I learned when he
visited the city before that Bane can easily enter populated areas by
concealing his presence, so acquiring various knowledge would be easy for him.
Considering this, it wouldn't be a difficult task for Bane,
who can freely command the undead. After all, the Demon King has his own
territory, so I know that monsters alone are capable of building a
civilization.
"Please, come inside. Bane-sama is
waiting."
"Is it okay to just walk in?"
"Yes. Please enter as you are."
Doing as the Ghost Wizard said, we entered the
building. Not just the exterior, but the interior was also built with
meticulous attention to detail; while not quite at the level of the Greatest
family's home, the quality was high.
"The inside is amazing too! But I can't get used to a
room full of nothing but monsters!"
"It is scary even knowing they won't attack."
"Exactly! The creepiness inside such a beautiful
building is intense!"
Listening to the conversation of the scared pair, we
proceeded deeper to find Bane standing and waiting in a spacious hall.
His expression was one of uncontainable joy, making me hesitate slightly to
enter the room.
"Graham-sama! I have been waiting for you! How
many times I considered going to the Royal Capital...! I am truly, truly
glad to see you!!"
Overwhelmed by Bane's intensity, I was at a loss for
words, but Bane rushed over without a care in the world.
"Graham-sama, what do you think of this
building? I had my servants build it so that you may spend your time
comfortably even here in my dwelling!"
"I-I think it's quite good. More importantly... isn't
your energy a bit too high? Also, you're too close."
"My apologies! Being able to meet Graham-sama
after such a long time, I just got too excited!"
He moved away, but his footwork was like a dance; his excitement
was still strange. From now on... I should try to visit him without leaving too
many days in between. Dealing with this level of excitement is too exhausting.
"Anyway, I want to talk calmly for a bit. May I take a seat there?"
"Of course! This mansion belongs to you, Graham-sama,
so please use it as freely as you wish!"
"I wish you'd stop saying it's mine... but understood.
I'll take a seat."
Tilting my head and wondering if Bane was always like
this, we sat down side-by-side. Bane sat across from us, and finally, we
were ready to have a calm conversation.
"I'd like to get right to it—did anything unusual
happen while we were away in the Royal
Capital?"
"Yes, there are several things! To report the most
important matter first: someone from the Demon King's Army came to this Old
Abandoned Road again."
"Someone from the Demon King's Army? Did they
come to seek revenge for that executive... Bol-something, who came the
other day?"
"No, it was the opposite. They came to recruit me,
asking if I would join as an executive of the Demon King's Army."
So they tried to recruit the very opponent who killed a Demon
King's Army executive to become an executive themselves. Rather than
broad-mindedness, I feel the abnormality of it even more strongly.
"Bane-san killed a Demon King's Army
executive, right? Recruiting such an enemy...
is a bit unthinkable."
"True! It's inconceivable that they'd go for
recruitment instead of revenge!"
"Since Bolfry, an executive, was killed, I
believe normally they would want to attack me. ...However, I think there is a
reason the Demon King's Army cannot do so. They may also consider
fighting amongst monsters to be ridiculous."
So the enemy of the Demon King's Army is strictly
humanity. For that purpose, they would bring in even a monster who killed one
of their executives. Having fought them for many years, I know their terror in
my bones, but even just their way of thinking carries a certain dread.
"So, did you accept that offer, Bane?"
"Never, never! The only one I serve is you, Graham-sama!
I had the Demon King's messenger leave. ...Well, I did consider placing
myself in the Demon King's Army to leak internal information to you, Graham-sama,
but I hated the idea of obeying anyone other than you, even if it was just an
act!"
Bane said this
with sparkling eyes. It definitely isn't something to say with sparkling eyes,
but I am grateful for this absolute loyalty.
"As long as you don't bare your fangs at me, I wouldn't
have minded if you joined the Demon King's Army, but if you've decided
not to, I respect your choice, Bane."
"Thank you very much! I will serve you for my entire
life, Graham-sama!"
Bane bowed
with such force it looked like he was about to prostrate himself. I'm happy
about it, sure, but I still don't understand why he pledges such loyalty to me.
All I did was give him a name, after all. With a wry smile,
I decided to listen to the next report.
