Chapter 168
Mount Cube
Translator : PolterGlast
The day after receiving information from the Crimson Rose.
When we headed to the city gate as agreed, Veronica and Mona were
already there. Considering there were only two of them, it seemed they hadn't
been able to gather all their party members on such short notice after all.
"Graham-san, good morning. Let's work well
together today."
"Yeah, counting on you. The others couldn't make it
after all?"
"I tried asking just in case, but it was a no-go. Well,
joining us would mean practically picking a fight with the Guild Master, and I
kind of get the feeling it might be better with just Veronica and me anyway, so it's fine."
Indeed, if the remaining members didn't participate, there
was a possibility of smoothing things over with the Guild Master later. In the
worst-case scenario, I could just claim that I threatened the two of them into
guiding us.
"I wanted to see the others after so long too, but we
decided yesterday and left today, so it can't be helped!"
"Right. Are you two okay with leading the way?"
"Of course. We will guide you right up to around where
we defeated the Red Dragon."
"Then, I'll leave the guidance to Veronica and Mona.
Leave the combat along the way to us."
"Veronica-san, Mona-san. We're in your
hands."
"Leave it to us. Shall we get going?"
Leaving the lead to Veronica and Mona, we
departed the city of Klingark. Since the mountain was clearly visible, I
thought we would arrive in about an hour or two... but it was more than twice
as far as I expected; we reached Mount Cube five hours after leaving Klingark.
Partly because we let Veronica and Mona set
the pace, our progress was slightly slow, but even so, it was surprisingly far.
The fact that something distant felt close meant that Mount Cube was
just that massive. We made preparations to camp out just
in case, but it looks like we're definitely going to end up sleeping outdoors.
"Finally arrived! It felt incredibly far!"
"Me too. It was surprisingly far."
"With this, won't it be difficult to climb it within
today?"
"Ehh! We can't go back today?"
As we exchanged our impressions of our first time at Mount
Cube, Veronica, who had been listening, replied.
"It will be difficult to return today. There is a
mountain hut halfway up, so the plan is to stay overnight there and then aim
for the summit. If the Red Dragon's corpse remains, I think we can
descend by tomorrow, but if it has become a Dragon Zombie as Graham-san
said and we start searching for it... I believe we will likely spend tomorrow
night in the hut as well."
"Geh! I didn't think we'd be staying that long! Hey,
hey, Graham. Do you sense any reaction from the Dragon Zombie?"
"I've been searching since we arrived... but I don't
feel anything so far."
If it were a Dragon Zombie, I thought I would be able
to sense a strong life reaction, but so far I haven't been able to detect any
life signs at all. Is it because it's an undead monster that I can't sense a
life reaction, or is the Dragon Zombie simply not there?
If Guanza's information was a lie, that would
actually be for the best... but if it has already moved from Mount Cube,
that would be extremely troublesome. In any case, we need to push on toward the
summit. We won't get anywhere until I confirm with my own eyes the corpse of
the dragon the Crimson Rose defeated.
"Then, doesn't that mean it's not on this
mountain?"
"Not necessarily. There's a possibility there's simply
no life reaction, or it moved to another location. Anyway, confirming the
corpse is urgent."
"It is an undead monster, after all. Bane-san
has a strong life reaction, but with other undead monsters, I feel like they
don't even exist even if they are right in front of me."
"Bane is completely special. As Ginia
said, you can't sense life reactions from other undead monsters."
Well, I can sense magical energy reactions instead, but I
don't think a Dragon Zombie uses magic, so searching via that route is
tough. Basically, we have no choice but to search on foot.
"So that means we have to give up and camp on the
mountain...!"
"The mountain hut was decent, so you don't need to be
that anxious."
"But there's no toilet or bath, though."
"Waaah! That's not decent at all!"
"Aoi, you're asking for too much. Don't worry about
it, let's go."
"Alright.
From here on, the path becomes even steeper, so please be careful not to get
separated."
"Understood. Veronica-san, Mona-san.
Please continue to lead us."
Leaving the grumbling Aoi alone, we began to advance toward the summit again. Well, I also wanted to avoid camping as much as possible, so I thought about proposing that I dash to the summit alone... but that would defeat the purpose of bringing Ginia and Aoi. For the sake of their growth, I'll accept the camping and focus on the Dragon Zombie search.
