Chapter 170
Black Mass
Translator : PolterGlast
For the time being... the priority was to find out where the
Dragon Zombie had disappeared to. I called over the two who were playing
with the Red Wyvern scales and decided to search the immediate area.
"If it went somewhere, where would it be? Is it certain
that it's on Mount Cube?"
"I don't know that either. ...However, given the large
number of Undead monsters here, I think there is a high possibility it
is somewhere on this mountain."
"It might be unexpected that you can't find it, Graham!
You can always sense presences, so I thought you'd find it right away this time
too!"
"Undead are a bit special. For now, I'll search
around here alone. Can you two wait here?"
"Understood. I'll wait with Aoi-chan."
"Don't kill it all by yourself, Graham! Make
sure you call us!"
"I know. I'm off then."
After telling them that, I sprinted around the summit area.
Even if a Red Wyvern is small for a Dragon, it's huge compared to
a normal monster, so it should be easy to find... but I couldn't see it.
I didn't feel any strange presence either; so far, it didn't
seem like a Dragon Zombie was here. However, Undead monsters were
still rampant, and it felt like they were spawning from the summit.
It would be quick if I could see something like miasma, but
right now I had no choice but to haphazardly search the direction from which
the Undead monsters were emerging. Crushing every monster I passed with Gravity
Magic, I aimed for the peak... and saw a black mass sitting at the very
top.
It had a shape I had never seen before, and I knew instantly
that this black mass was the source of the trouble. However... it was strange
that I didn't get a particularly malicious vibe from it even when I had it in
my sights.
"What is this? ...An egg?"
I approached the black mass to verify what it was, but up
close, it looked like nothing other than an egg. There was something resembling
a bird's nest beneath the black mass, so I was pretty sure it was an egg, but
the size of the black mass was larger than me.
I touched it lightly; it had a decent hardness, raising the
possibility that it was a Dragon's egg. I couldn't see a direct link to
the Dragon Zombie, but it couldn't be unrelated.
"Should I crush it, or take it back..."
I hesitated on how to deal with it, but thinking of Greg,
I felt it would be better to take it back. If it was related to the Dragon
Zombie or the Undead monsters infesting Mount Cube, it would
be easier to explain if I brought it back without crushing it. Thinking this, I
lifted the egg-like black mass, hoisted it onto my shoulder, and returned to
where Ginia and the others were waiting.
"Hue...? I thought some weird thing was approaching,
but it's just Graham! What is that black thing!"
"Most likely a monster's egg. I brought it back
thinking it might be a Dragon egg."
"A Dragon egg? Does it have some connection to
the Dragon Zombie?"
"I don't know. By the way, there was no Dragon
Zombie in this area. I don't think it's halfway down the mountain either,
so it might have already left Mount Cube."
"That means we won't get to fight the Dragon Zombie
after all! But, but, if the Dragon Zombie is gone from Mount Cube,
does that mean the plague in Klingark will subside?"
If that were the case, it would be a simple story, but my
thought was that it wouldn't end. Even if it moved from Mount Cube, I
believed it was still nearby.
"I don't know about that either. But if it's lurking
nearby, I don't think it will subside."
"Hmm... It seems we need to investigate a little more.
If Greg-san cooperates after seeing that egg, I'm sure we can obtain
some solid information. If it is lurking nearby, there must be adventurers in Klingark
who have noticed something unusual."
"I thought so too, which is why I brought this egg
back. Let's descend for today and show this egg to Greg."
It should be sufficient proof that something abnormal is
happening. Ideally, I wanted to defeat the Dragon Zombie, but proceeding
further without more solid information seemed difficult. So, we decided to call
off the Dragon Zombie search on Mount Cube and descend.
"Hey, hey, I was just wondering about one thing... If
that egg belongs to the Red Wyvern that turned into a zombie, won't it
come attack us?"
"Once it becomes Undead, its consciousness from
before should be cut off, so I don't think so."
"Is that so? Bane-san chats away fluently,
though!"
"Bane is special, and even Bane doesn't
have memories of his life, I think. He can talk like that because it's been a
long time since he became Undead."
"I see! So even if we take the egg back, we don't have
to worry about the Dragon Zombie attacking the city of Klingark!"
"Yeah. We shouldn't... probably."
I don't think it will, but I suddenly got worried. If it
became Undead for the sake of the egg, the possibility of it attacking
isn't zero.
Looking back now, the fact that Undead monsters were
rampant on Mount Cube could be interpreted as them protecting the egg. I
suddenly felt anxious about taking the egg back, but since Greg was in
denial, there was no choice but to bring it.
Besides, even if the Dragon Zombie came to attack to retrieve the egg, if it's a Red Wyvern, I can handle it. In that case, I'd feel bad that I couldn't let Ginia and Aoi fight it, but the lives of civilians are the top priority, so I'll defeat it. Thinking about these things while carrying the black egg, I descended Mount Cube.
