Chapter 171
Flying In
Translator : PolterGlast
Clutching the black egg, we
descended the mountain and decided to spend the night at the mountain hut
located halfway down. Once we descended past a certain point, the frequency of
monster appearances dropped sharply. Around the hut itself, encounters were so
rare that we fell into a deep sleep without even posting a guard... but then.
I realized something was approaching and woke up with a
start. While Ginia and Aoi slept soundly beside me, I strained my
ears and heard the distinct, heavy sound of flapping wings flying toward us.
"Ginia, Aoi. Wake up."
"...Mn? It's still pitch black. What's wrong?"
"Something is coming. I can hear loud wings, so it
might be the Dragon Zombie."
"—R-Really? Then I must get up."
"Waaah. It didn't have to come at night!"
Rubbing their eyes vigorously, the two forced themselves
awake. Leaving them be for a moment, I stepped outside first to prepare for
whatever was approaching.
Despite the loud flap-flap sound of wings, I still
couldn't sense its presence. Given this strange sensation, there was no doubt
it was the Dragon Zombie.
Judging by its speed, it was safe to assume it had come to
retrieve the black egg I brought back. As Aoi said, its arrival at night
was nuisance in the extreme, but it was a small mercy that this happened before
we returned to Klingark. Since we
could fight freely here on Mount Cube,
I'd have Ginia and Aoi make quick work of it, and then we could
report the results to Greg.
"Kept you waiting! Is the Dragon Zombie here
yet?"
"Yeah. It hasn't shown itself yet... but you can hear
the approaching wings, right?"
"It's true. I can tell it's getting closer."
"It should come into view in a few dozen seconds. It
must be tough right after waking up—and in the middle of the night, no less—but
if it's the Dragon Zombie, I'm having you two fight it."
"Of course! That's what we came for!"
"Leave it to us. We will definitely defeat it."
The two of them seemed completely wide awake now, and they
were all fired up. For now, we picked up the black egg and moved to a spot a
little ways off to ensure the mountain hut wouldn't get damaged—and about
thirty seconds later...
A large black object flying at tremendous speed came into
view. Since I had predicted a Red Wyvern, I expected a red monster, but
its entire body was corroded, turning it into a pitch-black beast.
Not only its body but its face was completely festering, and
the stench was horrific. Undoubtedly, this Dragon Zombie was the cause
of the plague.
"It stinks! It's my first time seeing a dragon, but the
fact that the smell is winning over the fear is just too complicated!"
"This is... just being near it feels like we'll get
sick. The plague really is caused by the Dragon Zombie, isn't it?"
"In all likelihood, yes. We might catch some kind of
disease too, so prioritize speed and take it down."
"A pitch-black monster in the mountains at midnight, a Dragon
Zombie on top of that, and now you're demanding speed too?! It can't be
helped, but the conditions are harsh!"
"But it's a chance to test our abilities. Aoi-chan,
let's do this."
"It's true that this is what I wanted... well, I guess
we just have to do it! Let's beat the crap out of the Dragon Zombie!"
After lightly bumping fists, the two readied their weapons
against the incoming Dragon Zombie. The Dragon Zombie seemed to
spot us as well, opening its festering maw wide and letting out a roar.
Letting it charge with that momentum would be troublesome,
so it was my job to knock it down from
the sky. Being careful not to kill it, I unleashed magic at the flying Dragon Zombie.
"Gravity Magic: Impact."
The Dragon Zombie had been charging with full force,
but the moment my magic hit, it plummeted and
slammed into the ground. A tremendous sound echoed, followed by the shockwave
of the impact reaching us.
"...Eh? Graham! You didn't kill it,
right?!"
"We got all fired up and motivated! We don't need a
punchline where Graham-san defeats it, okay?!"
"It's fine. I didn't kill it... probably."
"Stop looking so unconfident! The impact was huge;
isn't it squashed?"
As I watched, praying along with them that the Dragon
Zombie wasn't dead, it let out a roar of rage, completely ignoring our
worries. It was a strange situation to be relieved that it was alive, but
regardless, I was truly glad it hadn't died.
"Thank goodness! It's super mad, but it's not
dead!"
"From here on, I won't lift a finger or say a word. You
two take down the Dragon Zombie. However, if you get into a pinch, I'll
help, so throw everything you have right now at it."
"Thank you. I should be facing a raging Dragon
Zombie, yet my body feels hot with excitement."
"Me too! A little while ago I would have been scared,
but now I can't wait!"
Listening to their reassuring words, I smiled and nodded. Whether they could win was about fifty-fifty, but Ginia and Aoi would pull it off. With high expectations, I decided to watch their battle from the rear.
