Volume 2 Chapter 9

Sinking Shadows, Negative Speculations

"Phew......"

Upon his return to his office at the academy, Jihad was greeted by a woman.

Her name is Inda Metis. She is Jihad's right-hand woman at the school and a teacher in charge of first and second-class homerooms.

"How was it?"

"Without a doubt, it's Abyss Grief. Once the corpse is recovered, we will take it to the Gloaurum Institute. Here are the documents......"

"Excuse me."

Inda skimmed through the documents handed to her by Jihad as she quickly flipped through them.

"Shina Juliel has regained her connection with the spirits. It is a joyous thing. But this is-......"

"Nozomu, Bountis, huh? What do you think?"

"I can't say ....... I just can't honestly believe that a person with [Ability Suppression] can survive against that Abyss Grief."

"Yeah, normally that would be the case. That means he has something to make up for such a handicap. As a teacher of this school, I'm happy for him."

Originally, the Solminati Academy was meant to train the human resources lost in the Great Invasion.

Also, something that could make up for the [Ability Suppression]. If it were skills or experiences, it would be something that could be passed on to others. If the report was correct, it was natural for Jihad to be curious about Nozomu.

Inda, on the other hand, sensed the color of recognition in Jihad's every word.

"Jihad-sensei, did you already know something about him?"

"Just a little bit from an old acquaintance. So what do you think?"

Jihad's gaze turned away from Inda and toward a corner of his office. There, a boy in a school uniform was leaning lazily against the wall.

"Well, let's see~. At least, I think he's an interesting guy. He seems to be liked by that black-haired princess."

Nodding at the boy's words, Jihad turned his attention back to Inda.

"How are the preparations for the Special Exercise going?"

"Everything is set and we can proceed as planned."

"All right. Then, please proceed as planned."

"Yes, sir. Well then, I'll take my leave......"

Inda bowed and left the office. Among the two who were left behind, the male student shrugged his shoulders and asked Jihad.

"What do you want me to do~nya? Should I go look into it?"

"No, not right now. Just observe him, that's all. It is still unlikely that he is a spy. Even if he is, it doesn't matter as long as we can figure out what he's up to."

For Jihad, whether or not Nozomu is a spy is not so much of a problem. To begin with, there are already a number of spies in the city.

However, Arcazam is aware of both its members and collaborators.

Just as every country has its own counter-intelligence organization, so does this city have its own counter-organization.

The name of the organization is [Starlight]. And this male student was a member of that organization.

"Well, no problem. To be honest, I'm curious about him too. Now that I have your approval, shall I get to work immediately? I hope you'll pay me well."

While waving his hand, the male student left the office. His ears were triangular, and a golden tail protruded beneath his waist.

Deep in the forest, where the ground had been tragically gouged out and the trees had fallen over on top of each other.

A gray robe stood like a shadow in a place where a new layer of soil had been laid.

"I didn't expect this to appear here....... Certainly, it is not impossible, but why now? ...... Is it perhaps attracted by that guy?"

The gray robe muttered so while staring at the ground beneath his feet.

It was the place where the Abyss Grief that Nozomu and the others had defeated was once buried.

Despite being buried under the soil, there was a nose-piercing odor wafting from under the soil, and the air around it was filled with a heavy, stale atmosphere.

"Anyway, we're short-handed right now. We have to eliminate as many uncertainties as possible at this point......"

A staff extended from beneath the robe, the tip of which struck the ground with a thump.

The next moment, a white light poured out and seeped into the soil below.

*Ku~a ――! Ku~a ――!*

Perhaps startled by the sudden burst of light, the sleeping ravens fly away one by one, rustling the trees in the forest.

"Ravens, huh? Bad omen......"

The gray robe looked up at the flock of ravens that had suddenly taken flight.

When the light subsided, the odor from earlier had completely disappeared.

"All right. Now all that's left is that abominable dragon......"

The gray robe turned away. His back was filled with tension that split the atmosphere with a tingling sensation.

In the forest where no one knew. Only one raven, which did not run away, was hiding in the branches of a tree, staring at the gray robe with its crimson eyes.

A young man with blond hair was walking through Spasim Forest.

A single sheet of letter was clutched in his hand as he made his way through the trees without hesitation.

He eventually arrived at an open space in the middle of the dense Spasim forest where the grass and trees were strangely trimmed.

The surrounding trees were marked with numerous cuts indicating that someone had slashed them with a sword. Ken looked at these cut marks with a frown. Then he turned his gaze to one of the trees circling the open space.

"Nozomu, what is this all about?"

Ken greeted Nozomu with a cold voice as he walked toward him.

Seeing him, Nozomu took a deep breath and began to speak in a serious tone of voice.

"Ken, I have something I want to ask you."

Nozomu's frozen gears began to tick and turn.
