Chapter 49
Someone Has Come
Translator : PolterGlast
【Runa's POV】
"Phew... I guess
that's about it."
Currently, I am in a
room at Akana-san's mansion, discussing plans for improving the town with her.
"Yes, it's
amazing that we were able to put together a plan this well... You're truly
amazing, Kakyouin-san."
"I don't know
much about the technical stuff. But I can give you an opinion from a general
perspective. You've done a lot, Akana-san, but in my opinion, you've been too
afraid of backlash from the people. Because of that, you've been limiting your
actions, and you've only made subtle changes that people might not even notice.
If you keep going like this, no matter how hard you try, you won't gain the
people's trust."
"Yes... I'm
sorry."
Akana-san hung her
head and sulked. Well, it's the truth, and it's better that she can accept it
properly.
I shifted my gaze to
the side. There was a chair where we had been sitting to discuss things, a set
of tables, and two blue papers and feather quills on the table.
The blue paper was
filled with detailed plans for improving the town that Akana-san and I had put
together.
I quickly checked the
blue paper to make sure there were no mistakes, then shifted my gaze again.
"...Speaking of
which, he's late today."
It was already time
for Kushina to come pick me up. Well, maybe he was late because of a request,
but it still felt strange. I couldn't help but voice my concern out loud.
"Kushina-san?
Come to think of it, he is late today. Usually, he would have come at the right
time."
Akana-san also looked
at the wall clock. The clock already showed between three and four o'clock
(between 6 and 9 pm on Earth).
"I'm a little
worried."
"Yeah, me too.
I'm not worried about Kushina's life, but with his personality, I can't help
but feel uneasy. He might easily be swayed by what other people say."
"Th-that's a
different kind of worry..."
Akana-san's expression
twitched slightly at my different concern.
I understand what she
means. But if you actually interact with Kushina, you'll understand what I'm
saying. Well, it's not like I'm going to give Kushina to anyone.
And just at that
moment───
Knock knock
We heard a knock at
the door.
"Oh, maybe it's Kushina-san?
He's finally come to pick you u───"
"Shh."
I put my index finger
to my lips and exhaled, silencing Akana-san.
Akana-san looked
confused at first, but then she thought about why I did that and her eyes
widened, realizing something.
It was clear that the
person who knocked wasn't Kushina.
I had told Kushina,
"When you come to pick me up, knock three times, and be sure to say, 'I'm
finished with my work' at the door."
But the knock just now
was only twice. And he didn't say a word afterward. So, it wasn't Kushina.
Moreover, Akana-san
had strictly ordered her servants and guards, and only people who met certain
conditions were allowed in this mansion. And even if there was an urgent
matter, they were not allowed to enter the room immediately but had to knock
three times and shout "Emergency!" loudly. So, the possibility of it
being someone related to Akana-san was also eliminated.
A third party who
shouldn't be in this mansion. And a third party who has no connection to us.
Such a person is boldly knocking on the door. Considering that───
"Akana-san, you
said there was a secret passage in this room, right?"
"Y-yeah, there
is, but... don't tell me..."
"That's right, let's
escape from here."
At my words, Akana-san
widened her eyes again.
"………Everyone..."
She began to worry
about the people who lived in this mansion, the employees hired by the Gilmberg
family.
"Akana-san, think
carefully───what is important
now?"
"But, Runa-san.
Everyone───"
"Someone is
boldly knocking on the door. Don't you understand what this means? Get a
grip."
"───!"
Because I
intentionally pointed out the possibility of escape, a look of despair began to
appear on Akana-san's face.
If a third party
boldly enters the mansion, normally someone from the mansion would stop them.
But that's not happening. That means───either the servants have been killed or they betrayed her.
Reality is very cruel.
More often than not, things don't go as planned.
It's not that I don't
understand Akana-san's feelings───but if she keeps distracted by that, she'll be tripped up.
If you really want to
succeed, you have to look ahead even in times like this.
"Akana-san, what
is your goal? Is it to make your servants happy?"
"………"
"No, it's not.
Your goal is to clear your family's name. To restore the honor of your father,
who has been working hard until now, isn't it? Is it really okay to stumble
here?"
"………!"
As if accepting my
words, Akana-san closed her eyes tightly as if to push her feelings aside.
"Come on,
Akana-san. Let's go outside and check the situation first."
"Yes."
And so, Akana-san went
to the study in this room───and tilted one of the books pushed into it slightly.
Then, the floor on the
opposite side of the study opened, revealing a staircase to the underground.
