[WN] Three Skills : Volume 1 Chapter 50

Volume 1

Chapter 50

Faith Spoke Up

Translator : PolterGlast

Runa's POV

Akana-san and I descended from the mansion's emergency staircase into an underground waterway and emerged from an exit a short distance away.

Despite it being nighttime, the sun was still illuminating the world in this strange world. It was peculiar. Normally, if the sun shone continuously, the temperature would rise steadily, eventually leading to abnormal weather. Yet, that didn't happen in this world. It was as if someone else was controlling the climate.

But that wasn't important right now. We both immediately began to check the situation of the town.

This town, with its tall stone buildings, did not offer a good view. Nevertheless, we could get a sense of the town's situation from the sounds and atmosphere of the people. We continued to be highly alert to our surroundings.

"Nothing seems to be happening in the town... It's surprisingly normal."

"Yes, at least it seems like the residents aren't in any danger."

"I can't say that for sure. Anyway, we need to find Kushina and join up with him───"

Just as I was about to say that and head out of the city,

"Oh, oh, just as you said. They're coming out from a place like this, huh?"

Suddenly, a voice called out to us from behind.

"………You are!"

I turned around and my eyes widened at the person who had spoken. It was the adventurer who had previously picked on me and Kushina, a man with unusually long hair tied back in a ponytail.

Clad in full black armor and wielding a large black sword in his right hand, he was clearly in a combat stance, unlike before. Just by facing him like this, I could feel that he was on a different level than others.

Akana-san was also astonished and covered her mouth with both hands in surprise, as though she knew this man.

"Oh, you remember me? I'm glad. Let me reintroduce myself again. I'm Faith Yukina, a rank 5 adventurer registered in this town... in other words, an old veteran adventurer."

"………Yukina?"

"Oh? What's this? So you remember my name too? I'm even happier now. Well, my family name is different from when I introduced myself before. Usually, I use my wife's family name. But when I'm working, I use my real name to get myself pumped."

"Hmm, so it's like a routine. But is it okay? Talking to a woman so familiarly in a place like this. Your wife is going to cry again, isn't she?"

"Well, yeah... maybe ten years ago, she might have."

Then the man named Faith began to look up at a diagonal angle with deep emotion.

"Ten years ago?"

"Yeah, ten years ago. I don't have a wife who cries for me anymore."

Faith made a wistful expression.

"Huh?"

"Back at the guild, I had to pretend I still had a wife, just to follow orders... but she passed away ten years ago."

"───!"

The words 'she passed away ten years ago' finally made things clear to a certain extent.

This town was struck by a great famine ten years ago. The food supply chain collapsed, and many starved to death. Some people even resorted to cannibalism, it was that bad.

Likely, his wife passed away during that time.

"Ten years ago, I wasn't much of an adventurer. I was barely making ends meet. But then that big incident happened. All the stores suddenly raised their prices, so I, who was earning very little at the time, had no choice but to go to a distant land to support my wife. And when I went to a distant store, the prices were the same as usual... I still remember how foolishly I was overjoyed, thinking, 'Now my wife will be happy.' Wasn't I foolish?"

"……"

Faith asked us with a self-mocking smile, and we couldn't say anything. There was nothing we could say.

"When I got back, my wife was dead. She was eaten by cannibals. She was dismembered with a big knife, and the people in the neighborhood were eating her flesh. I'll never forget that."

"……"

"This is the second time I've told you this, but what do you think, noble lady?"

Faith turned his sharp eyes to Akana-san and demanded an answer in a harsh voice.

Akana-san looked away, somewhat crestfallen.

That's understandable.

For her, it was around the time she was just becoming aware of things───in other words, she was someone who didn't know the details, or at least not yet old enough to remember. What could such a person say to a man who bears a cross?

Akana-san is still kind at heart. That's why she can't say anything.

That's why I can't help but say that Akana-san is still too naive as a noble.

"Basically, you're just taking it out on her."

I answered Faith's question instead.

"Haa???"

"R-Runa-san!?"

"You were angry at yourself for not being there for your wife when it mattered, for not being able to protect her, but you didn't know where to direct that anger, and you found the Gilmberg family as the perfect outlet. So, you're just venting your anger, aren't you?"

I know I'm just getting on Faith's nerves by saying this. But I hate it when someone with a wrong mindset keeps arguing. So I'm going to refute him.

We're going to fight either way. So, if he loses his composure in anger, it would be a good thing.

Akana-san could only stare at me dumbfounded. She looked like she wanted to say, "What are you doing?"

And Faith, on the other hand, had his head downcast and his shoulders trembled. I thought he was angry, but───

"Kukuku..."

"───?"

"Hahaha!"

Contrary to my expectations, Faith laughed.

"Haha, hahaha! Venting my anger... I see, it's venting my anger! That's certainly true! Hahaha!"

"───"

I irritated him and yet he laughed? What is this guy thinking?

I'm so confused by Faith's behavior.

"Haa, sorry, sorry. Your words are so funny, I just couldn't help myself."

"......Are you crazy?"

"Bfft! C-Crazy, huh? Don't be so blunt, hahaha!"

What the heck is wrong with this guy... he's so creepy.

"My stomach hurts. Well, you really made me laugh."

"………"

"Don't look at me with such contempt, it'll just make me excited."

Uwaa.

"Anyway, enough with the jokes."

Faith swung the greatsword he was carrying and pointed the blade at us.

"That's right. This is just me Venting my anger. It's a pathetic act of a pathetic old man. But you know what, miss? Even if I understand that, I can't just back down. I'm not that kind of person."

"………"

"Because of my selfish feelings, I will never forgive the Gilmberg family. I will let out all the sadness from that time and all the anger I have for myself here."

And so, Faith held the greatsword with both hands, pulled it towards his chest, and said,

"Let's go."

And he charged towards us.
