Volume 1
Interlude
Tekiru Shitsuha
Translator : PolterGlast
Tekiru Shitsuha was
never meant to be an adventurer. Born into an ordinary farming family, his
aspirations were as simple as his origins: to follow in his father's footsteps
as a farmer.
That was, until his
dreams were shattered.
Ten years ago, a great
famine struck Gilmberg territory. Tekiru's family was not exempt. Their crops
failed.
As a simple farming
family, the loss of their crops meant the collapse of their livelihood.
Tekiru's parents starved to death.
However, his parents
were good parents until the very end. Despite knowing that they would die if
they didn't eat, they reduced their own portions to feed their son, Tekiru. As
a result, Tekiru was able to survive longer than his parents. Although, by the
time someone found him, he was on the verge of starvation.
Thanks to the person
who found him, Tekiru managed to survive. By sharing food and providing him
with basic necessities, he was able to live.
However, around the
time he had recovered and was able to act on his own, he despaired. He had seen
the sights of the town.
The entire town was
engulfed in famine, and the residents were suffering, struggling in an ugly way
to devour each other. And, in this world, there was no longer the mother he
adored or the father he admired. Could any child not despair in such a
situation?
The boy asked the one
who had saved him.
"Why didn't you
come earlier? Why didn't you save my parents? If you couldn't save my parents,
why didn't you just let me die too?"
The man replied.
"Because you have
value to me, and others do not. I saved you because I figured that by saving
you and doing you a favor, you would help me in the future."
When he heard those
words, the boy felt like he had been thrown back into a dark abyss. The man
hadn't saved the boy out of goodwill. He had simply helped the boy because he
found him useful according to his own self-interest.
Having lost those he
loved and trying to find someone he could trust, he was met with these words.
The boy experienced the terror of loneliness.
However, the man
continued.
"I can't forgive
the Gilmberg family for creating this situation. I can't forgive those nobles
who let their people suffer like this while they live comfortably in the royal
capital. I can't just let them continue to be our leaders. That's why I needed
your power. That's why I saved you."
The power the man was
referring to was a gift, a skill that people are born with - Tekiru's skill,
[Shadow Container (Greedle Shaker)].
This power grows
exponentially. In other words, the greater the base value, the greater the
benefit, and conversely, the smaller it is, the harder it is to notice the
effect. When Tekiru was young, he had not yet realized that he possessed such a
skill.
"Don't you hate
them too? The Gilmberg family, who drove this territory into this situation.
The nobles who abandoned your parents?"
The man planted the
seeds of hatred in the boy.
Indeed, the boy felt
hatred at that moment. He hated the nobles who had caused his parents' deaths.
However, having lost
everything at once, the boy was too devastated to be driven solely by hatred.
So the man continued.
"Is there nothing
left? Is everything, even your hatred, meaningless?"
The man asked.
The boy responded with
the silence of affirmation.
"Then live."
The boy was taken
aback by the man's seemingly causal words.
"Live, and find
something important again. And make that your guiding principle. That's the
only way you can live now. You are not allowed to die. Why do you think you
were the only one who survived in that situation? It's because your parents
desperately tried to keep you alive. Are you going to throw away your parents'
wishes?"
Those words made the
boy's eyes waver.
"Are you afraid
to find something important again? Do you think it will disappear anyway? Then
become strong. Become strong enough that no one can take it away from you. And
expand your relationships. Even if an enemy appears that you can't defeat
alone, you can overcome it by challenging them together. In that way, you will
become strong."
Those words seeped
into the boy's empty heart, which had believed that he had nothing and needed
nothing.
From then on, the boy
became an adventurer, living with those words as his support. He faced
countless life-threatening crises. He was often on the verge of giving up. But
every time, he leaned on these words and persevered.
In doing so, the boy
grew stronger. And he met many people, eventually becoming the leader of the
adventurers in this town. The fact that many adventurers admired and followed
him, even as he rebelled against the nobles, was proof of his charisma.
A small boy had grown
into a powerful figure, ready to swallow up the nobles who ruled the town.
The thing that was
important to him now was the people who had supported him until now, the people
who lived in this town, and he would never betray them.
Even if it meant
sacrificing his own life, he would bite into any opponent for their sake, using
all the strength, knowledge, and experience he had cultivated to be strong.
