[WN] Shut-In : Chapter 17

Chapter 17

[The Knight's Holy Remains]

Translator : PolterGlast

"So this is the [Knight’s Holy Remains]..."

Following the recommendation of the receptionist Melissa-san, I came to the notorious unpopular dungeon, the [Knight’s Holy Remains].

It's located quite far on the outskirts of the royal capital, and in terms of distance, it's in the opposite direction from the guild.

I guess the fact that it takes time to go report even if you defeat a monster is one of the reasons why this place is unpopular.

"But... there really aren't any people here..."

The first dungeon I've ever seen in this other world was quite different from what I imagined.

There are no guards monitoring to prevent monsters from overflowing or hiding items.

There was no hustle and bustle around the dungeon with stalls or stands around the dungeon for adventurers, or adventurers who wanted to challenge the dungeon but were short on numbers and were recruiting other adventurers to join them.

There are no guards, and not a single adventurer.

I wonder if this is really okay... When I looked around, I saw an old hut a little further away.

Probably, it's a guard station or something.

Since I will be visiting the place from now on, I might as well say hello, right?

"H-hello~"

"What is it? We don't accept magazine subscriptions here."

When I knocked, a normal response came from inside.

It's a slightly hoarse, old man's voice.

So there are subscriptions in this world too, huh... wait, that's not the point.

"I wanted to get permission to enter the dungeon..."

"What did you say?"

As soon as I heard the sound of footsteps, the door opened.

It was an old man clad in full armor.

His eyes are sharp like a bird of prey, and his full head of white hair is tied back in a ponytail.

The silver armor he's wearing is polished and shiny, and he carries a slightly dark scabbard on his waist.

Judging from the well-used handle, he seems to be good at straight swords.

"You're... going to the [Knight’s Holy Remains]?"

He looks at me suspiciously.

When he put his hand to his chin, the gauntlets made a clanking sound.

The total weight including the weapon seems to be quite heavy, but there's no sign of his body swaying at all.

Judging from the fearsomeness emanating from his whole body, he must be the gatekeeper of this [Knight’s Holy Remains].

"Yes, I'd like to give it a try if possible."

When I talked to the vigorous old man, he looked at me from head to toe.

"...Well, you don't seem to be in a hurry to die. Are you a mage?"

"Yes, I can use a few elements."

"--Hou."

I saw the old man's eyes that were looking at me flash for a moment.

The deep blue of his eyes made me feel as if he could see right through me.

"I see... you seem to be quite capable. With that much power, you should be able to go solo without any problems."

"Can you tell all that just from a glance?"

"Of course, who do you think I am? --I'm the knight Varietta."

"...Sorry, I've never heard of you."

"I-is that so... I still have to work harder..."

I comforted Varietta-san, who seemed a little disappointed.

I had a rough idea from his appearance, but apparently Varietta-san is a knight.

Judging from what he said, he might be quite famous.

"I have a mana detection skill. So I can tell that you have mana that doesn't match your young appearance."

I see, there's even such a skill.

...Maybe there's something like an appraisal skill, and there's a possibility that my [Home] gift will be exposed.

Until now, I've only been leveling up my magic to get stronger... but maybe I should study this world's skills and gifts properly.

I'm going to ask Melissa to teach me various things while I'm raising my LV at the [Knight’s Holy Remains].

"Varietta-san, from your point of view, do I look like I can solo in the [Knight’s Holy Remains]?"

"You can easily go up to the fifth floor. From the sixth floor onwards... well, it depends on your experience."

The number of mages among adventurers is not that small.

However, when it comes to solo mages, the number drops drastically.

In terms of firepower alone, mages have more firepower than close-combat classes.

But it takes some time to cast a powerful spell that can defeat an opponent, and if one uses magic many times, one will run out of MP and faint.

So, in order to go solo, one needs combat ability to buy time until one can activate magic, and dexterity to manage MP while fighting.

It's difficult for a mage to go solo unless they're a versatile magic swordsman who can also act as the vanguard.

...By the way, all of this was told to me by Melissa-san.

She told me a lot of things this morning, along with the advice that I should form a party.

"Alright, I'll do my best!"

"There's not much to gain, so don't do anything that will kill you."

"Thank you!"

I got a seal of approval from Varietta-san, so I'll try challenging the [Knight’s Holy Remains] right away.

It's my first dungeon... I'm getting nervous.

I mean... what should I do? I'm getting a stomach ache from the tension.

I think I'll go back home once I enter the dungeon and go to the bathroom...
