Chapter 18
Attempt
Translator : PolterGlast
I parted ways with
Varietta-san and entered the dungeon (by the way, I held back my urge to go to
the bathroom because it would waste my MP).
"Oh, it's a
little chilly..."
The inside is a
cave-like space, and the ground is paved with milky white stones (is that the
right word?).
The left and right
sides seem to be made of earth, and I could dig into them normally when I
touched them.
Luminous stones were
embedded in the left and right earthen walls and the ground, and there was
enough light to see a little ahead without turning on the lights.
The width of the
passage is wide enough to allow for combat.
It seems that I can
fight without any problems even if I'm surrounded by undead.
"Okay, next turn
right..."
The [Knight’s Holy
Remains] has been fully explored up to the fifth floor, and maps can be
purchased very cheaply.
Of course, I bought
one in advance on Melissa-san's advice, and I proceeded while squinting in the
dim light.
Then my ears picked up
the sound of footsteps.
It was a dragging
sound, like a leather bag being dragged.
Next came an
incredible pungent odor.
I've heard that the
stench of death is faintly sweet, but the smell that pierced my nostrils was
not that gentle.
It was a terrible
smell, like letting raw garbage sit for months and then aging it, and I almost
vomited the contents of my stomach.
"Ubooo..."
What appeared was a
moving corpse monster--a zombie.
It didn't have any
weapons, completely unarmed.
It looked weak, but by
using magic power, its physical strength apparently surpassed that of a human.
What's troublesome is
its powerful arm strength and its biting attack, which can paralyze the body if
one were to be bitten.
In addition, the
rotten flesh on its body seems to have a corrosive effect, and if you thrust an
iron sword into it, its durability apparently drops noticeably.
In any case, it's not
an opponent you want to engage in close combat with.
Perhaps because it's
dragging its rotten feet, it's not coming towards me that fast.
At this rate, I can
deal with it sufficiently before it reaches me.
"Light
Arrow!"
Light Arrow, which you
learn when you raise light magic to LV 2.
The arrow of light
travels without sound... or at least it traveled like an archery arrow I've
seen before.
The speed is just
barely visible to the eye. It seems to be slower than bullet speed or
something, since it can be perceived.
"U, ooo..."
The zombie was hit in
the head by the Light Arrow.
Upon impact, it
collapsed to the ground and stopped moving.
I shot another Light
Arrow just in case, but there was no response.
Apparently, I was able
to take it down with the first shot.
"Okay, if I can
manage with Light Arrow, I can conserve a lot of MP."
Light Arrow requires 3
MP.
Considering my MP and
natural recovery rate, I can fire as many times as I want without any problems.
Come to think of it,
light magic is effective against the undead, right?
In that case, I wonder
what will happen with other magic.
I'll try firing fire
magic at the zombie I encountered as I proceed.
"Fireball!"
A ball of fire that
can be released with the same 3 MP as Light Arrow heads towards the zombie.
The speed is a little
slower than Light Arrow.
Its strength could
damage the surroundings with the aftereffects of the impact and it could also
provide continuous damage from burns... but it's hard to really perceive
whether it's effective against the undead or not.
"Oooo..."
Even with Fireball, I
was able to defeat it without any problems with a single shot.
But at the same time
as I defeated it, an incredible smell spread around me.
"Ugh... it
stinks! It stinks so much!"
It's like having a
barbecue party with rotten meat... the smell of meat that doesn't whet your
appetite at all makes something sour rise to the back of my throat.
...I'll ban fire magic
against zombies from now on.
I made that firm
decision and decided to move on.
The inside of the
[Knight’s Holy Remains] is surprisingly spacious.
From the outside, it
looked like a mere cave, but it was clearly wider than the width of what was
visible.
Probably, they're
expanding the space with space-time magic or something.
I'm a little worried
about how I would proceed without a map.
I continued fighting
without any particular problems.
I've also decided how
to deal with multiple opponents.
If there are two
opponents, I fire Light Arrows in succession, and if there are three or more, I
use Light Arrow Rain, which rains down slightly weaker Light Arrows.
This is the best way
to balance MP efficiency and safety.
...Eh, fire magic?
I won't use that kind
of rubbish magic (extreme opinion).
I entered the
[Knight’s Holy Remains] before 8:00 AM.
By the time I came to
the stairs leading to the third floor and took a short break, it was past 1:00
PM.
I thought I could go
faster with the map, but it's taking longer than I expected...
Repeatedly searching
and destroying to gain experience points might not have been a good idea.
So far, I haven't had
any trouble at all with the zombies on the first and second floors.
In that case, I'll try
to avoid fighting as much as possible next time... no, that's not right.
In the first place, I
came here to test my own strength.
Even if it's
inefficient, I'll check the magic I can use now.
Today, I'll put
efficiency aside and check what I can do.
