032.1 Interlude:
The Mansion and Its Servants

It was the morning of
the 15th day since my reincarnation, and I woke up feeling refreshed.
"Good morning,
Master."
"Good
morning."
Before my eyes were
the faces of beautiful girls like angels. There was no way I wouldn't have a
refreshing morning.
"Unfortunately,
it's raining today, but what will you do about the dungeon?" Anneliese
asked.
Even if it rained, or
if spears rained down, my awakening was refreshing! After all, the threat to my
life had been eliminated.
"Let's take a
break today. I want to look around this mansion," I decided. Besides, the
other servants would be joining us later.
""Yes!""
both of them replied.
My room was a corner
room on the third floor. It was quite spacious, though not as big as the Duke's
room.
Anneliese and Rosalina
were in the same room. I had suggested separate rooms, but Anneliese said she
wanted to be with me, and Rosalina said she'd be lonely and wanted to stay
together. I couldn't help but agree, so we decided to sleep in the same room. I
had another bed placed next to mine, and they slept in separate beds. Yet, when
I woke up in the morning, I was sandwiched between the two of them. I was
happy, truly. But I wish they'd stop, because my self-control can't keep my
desires in check forever.
There was a large bed,
presumably used by the previous owner. Originally, it was big enough for three
people, but as I mentioned, I had another bed placed beside it. The sheets and
everything were thoroughly cleaned. It was a lavish, gaudy bed, quite
tasteless. I planned to replace it eventually.
When I went downstairs
to the first floor, Mondark appeared silently.
"Good morning,
Master. And to the ladies."
It's too late to say
it now, but they aren't "ladies" yet.
"Good morning,
Mondark."
""Good
morning, Mondark-san.""
"Breakfast will
be prepared shortly," Mondark announced, guiding us to the dining hall.
He pulled out a chair
for me, and as I sat, he adjusted its position. A capable butler is truly different!
Anneliese and Rosalina also sat down in their chairs. Both seemed unaccustomed
to such treatment, just like me, and looked a little bewildered.
"Good morning,
Master," Merlis and Jewel said in unison as they brought the food and
placed it before us.
There was bread, bacon
and eggs, soup, and even fruit that looked like kiwi. Did Golteo-san provide
this fruit too?
"We procured it
from the market this morning," Mondark said.
"The market...?
You woke up that early?" I asked, surprised.
"That is our duty
as servants," he stated.
Isn't that a bit like
a black company?
"Try not to cut
too much into your sleep. This time it can't be helped, but for breakfast,
pre-bought food from the day before is fine."
"We thank you for
your concern for our well-being, Master. While we should ideally follow your
words, we, too, have our pride in our work. We humbly ask for your
indulgence."
The three of them
bowed their heads.
"Alright, I
understand. But please, don't work yourselves to the point of breaking
down," I conceded.
"""Thank
you!""" they replied in unison. I was aiming for a
"white" (ethical) work environment, after all.
The bread was still
hard, but the bacon, eggs, and soup were delicious. Merlis was apparently the
main cook, and her skill seemed professional. A cook was supposedly joining
today, but I wondered if they could make food tastier than Merlis.
After the meal, we
toured the mansion.
On the third floor,
next to our room, was a servants' waiting room. We wouldn't use it, so it would
probably become a storage room. There were five other rooms, all spacious and
with attached servant rooms. Each room had a toilet and washbasin, and the
servants' waiting room even had a magic stove for simple cooking.
The second floor had
three guest rooms (with attached servant rooms) and the rooms for senior
servants like Mondark. The senior servants' room was the largest, with about 12
tatami mats, and Mondark and his wife were currently using it. Their son,
Jewel, had a room in the separate servants' annex.
The first floor had a
large room like a dance hall, a reception room, a dining hall, a living room, a
kitchen, and a passage leading to the bathhouse.
Though I hadn't used
it yesterday, the bathhouse was quite large. The bath, big enough for about
five people, was made of wood. There was a magic item that dispensed cold and
hot water, and the hot water was genuinely hot, probably around 80 degrees. It
seemed you adjusted the water temperature by mixing cold and hot water.
The laundry area was
outside, simply covered by a roof. There was a magic item for a washing
machine, but there were also a tub and a washboard. When I saw the tub and
washboard, I almost blurted out, "Is this the Edo period!?"
The basement contained
a wine cellar and a small storage room. Of course, there was no wine. I've
never drunk alcohol, but I wondered if I should buy some for guests. I don't
have any plans to have guests, though.
The garden had a
separate building for servants' use, as well as a warehouse and stables. There
was a small garden, and the yard was quite spacious.
The servants' annex
was a two-story building, much smaller than the main house, but felt like a
decently sized apartment building. It had 18 rooms of three types: four
10-tatami-mat single rooms, eight 6-tatami-mat four-person rooms, and six
4.5-tatami-mat single rooms.
The 6-tatami-mat
four-person rooms had two bunk beds and were quite cramped. The four-person
rooms were apparently for apprentices and children. The 10-tatami-mat rooms
could be used by multiple people if needed, but since there weren't that many
servants, single rooms would be fine. Jewel was using a 4.5-tatami-mat single
room.
"Master. We also
need to prepare clothes for the servants," Mondark reminded me.
"Is that
so?"
It seems it's normal
to provide for all their clothing, food, and shelter.
My expenses were much
higher than I had expected. I needed to work hard in the dungeon to earn
enough, it seemed.
After seeing the
entire mansion, the remaining two servants arrived. Including the Mondark family,
all of them were live-in.
One was a cook named
Zoppa, a chubby person in his early twenties. He had a comforting appearance.
"Zoppa, dasu. I
can't speak very politely, dasu. Apologies, dasu," Zoppa said, his speech
ending in a distinctive "dasu."
"It's fine, don't
be so nervous," I replied.
"Thank you,
dasu."
Their verbal tic was
amusing.
The other was a
16-year-old maid named Kenny. She's a beautiful woman who looked a bit grumpy.
I wished she'd wear glasses and push them up.
"My name is
Kenny... From now on, I-I hope to serve you well... sorry..." she
stammered.
Yeah, she was a bit
clumsy with her words. She was a beautiful blonde maid, but seemed to be a
klutz.
"I'm a bit
clumsy..." she explained.
I already figured that
out from her greeting, so it was fine.
"Is it okay if I
leave the servants' matters to Mondark?" I asked.
"Yes, please
leave it to me," Mondark replied.
"Also. Can you
prepare the clothes and other necessary items for the servants?"
"Thank you,
Master," he said.
I had given them money
yesterday too, but it was just the beginning, so there were many expenses.
My money was also
running low. I'd have to work hard starting tomorrow.
*
That evening, I took a
bath.
It didn't have to be
this big, but I ended up swimming a little.
"Master. I will
wash your back."
"Whoa!?"
Anneliese entered
naked, which startled me greatly.
I didn't know where to
look. Anneliese's plump breasts jiggled. Her butt jiggled too. No matter how
many times I saw them, those breasts were incredible. A truly impressive pair
of mounds.
Not to look at this
would be unmanly. I shamelessly stared at Anneliese's naked body!
