049 The Power
of Spirits

After the lecture from
Gandarvan and Anneliese, we decided to verify what the spirit could do, with
the two of them as witnesses.
When I used Detailed
Appraisal on the spirit, this is what appeared:
▼ Lesser Vine Spirit Lv20 ▼
No unique name.
Contracted spirit of Toi Footscythel. Can be summoned and dismissed. When
dismissed, it stays in its original dwelling place. Its abilities are as
follows: can manipulate and grow plants. Can possess its users to enhance them.
It seemed to be a vine
spirit, even among plants. Seeing those vines, it made sense that it was a
rose-type plant. So, for the ability verification, I asked it to show me how it
could grow plants.
However, I thought,
the Lesser Vine Spirit could only produce vines by itself. So, I decided to
purchase various plant seeds. For times like these, Golteo Trading Company,
which has everything, is convenient!
"Well, well,
Master Toi. Welcome!"
"Golteo-san. It's
been a while," I greeted him.
After becoming a
noble, I had purchased various items from Golteo-san, including servant
clothes, Gandarvan's armor, and weapons. According to Mondark, we were also
purchasing alcohol, food, and many other things from here. We were becoming
quite the valued customers.
"Today, I came to
look for plant seeds and seedlings."
"Plant seeds? I
heard you played a major role in the recent demon incident and were awarded a
medal. Did you also receive a territory?" Golteo-san asked. As expected of
a great merchant, he had excellent ears.
"No, no, no. I'm
just thinking of doing some home gardening," I replied.
"Home
gardening...?" Golteo-san looked puzzled. I told him not to think too
deeply about it and asked him to lead me to the seeds.
"I've heard the
news, about Anneliese," Golteo-san began as we walked.
"Anneliese played
a huge role in repelling the demon, so His Excellency the Duke said it was her
reward," I explained.
"That is
wonderful. This is the area for plant-related items. Please take your time
looking around," he said.
The shelves were
sectioned off, holding seeds and bulbs. No seedlings, it seemed.
"Oh, that reminds
me. Master Toi, have you heard that story?" That story? What was he
talking about? Not to brag, but I'm not sensitive to rumors.
"No, what
story?" I asked. I decided to let Gandarvan and the others handle the
shopping while I listened to Golteo-san. What kind of rumor could it be?
"It's about the
Heroes," he replied. Come to think of it, those guys were in this country
too. I had heard whispers about them from knights and soldiers while I was
being drilled by Barukan. They were apparently summoned to the capital of this
country.
"Did you do
business with the Heroes?" I asked.
"Hahaha. On the
contrary. The Heroes reportedly came to our store in the capital and demanded
we present them with demonic swords," Golteo-san said.
"Huh?"
Demonic swords? Those things that cost several million Grill, right? And they
demanded them? Aren't they idiots? No, they were idiots. Trash, at the very
least.
"And did you
present them with demonic swords?" I asked.
"Of course, we
politely refused," Golteo-san replied, smiling, but his eyes weren't.
"It's been over a
month and a half since Sir Shinji's party started entering the dungeon, but
they reportedly haven't made any progress in their exploration. I heard that
their party of 14, which started entering the dungeon a week ago, split into
four groups." A week in this world is 6 days, a month is 5 weeks (30
days), and a year is 12 months.
Anyway, they had a falling
out. They were all self-centered and lacked teamwork to begin with. After
coming to another world and gaining jobs, it seems they broke apart because
they could finally resist Shinji's brute force.
"Sir Shinji's
party, among others, hasn't made any progress in dungeon exploration and is
reportedly becoming unruly. As a result, they're coming to our shop demanding
demonic swords." If he's a Hero, he should be able to use the Holy Sword
Summon skill, shouldn't he? Though it could be some other guy impersonating a
Hero.
"What do you mean
'haven't made progress'?" I asked.
"Sir Shinji's
party apparently reached the 3rd floor shortly after starting dungeon
exploration, but they're still stuck on the 3rd floor," Golteo-san
explained. So, they're stagnating on the 3rd floor, huh. With their
personalities, they must be getting frustrated.
"The parties that
aren't Sir Shinji's party are reportedly doing well. They seem to have trained
thoroughly before entering the dungeon, and they're now exploring the 5th floor."
So, that's the group of guys who weren't Shinji's cronies. They didn't even try
to stop Shinji and his group when they were physically abusing me. I didn't
intend to rely on them anyway, so it doesn't matter, but I'm not going to cheer
them on either.
"Oh, right. The
production-type job holders are reportedly showing remarkable growth. While not
yet masters, they seem to be creating good items lately." I think there
were 6 production-type job holders, right? I don't know who has combat jobs and
who has production jobs, but I hope they do their best. I won't cheer for them,
but the people of this country must be hoping for their success.
Come to think of it,
she must be here too. Only Itsukushima-san showed me concern. I hope she's
doing well. As for the rest, I couldn't care less.
"You've told me
an interesting story. Thank you," I said.
"Not at all. You
can hear rumors like this anywhere," Golteo-san replied.
Gandarvan and the
others seemed to have finished their shopping, so I decided to leave. Since
there were so many things, they apparently bought everything. The four soldiers
carried back what they could, and the rest was to be delivered to the mansion
by Golteo Trading Company. I could have taken everything back using my Item
Box, but I couldn't use it here.
"Thank you for
today. And truly, congratulations on your military achievements,"
Golteo-san said, courteously seeing me off as I left the store. I'll come back
to shop again, so I hope to see you then.

Back at the mansion, I
immediately began verifying the Lesser Vine Spirit's abilities.
"Should I sow
these seeds?" I asked. The Lesser Vine Spirit gestured, conveying that I
should sow the seeds in an empty spot in the garden.
I took about 10 seeds,
which I thought were a type of bean, and was about to plant them when the
Lesser Vine Spirit indicated that I should just scatter them. "Should I
really just scatter them?" I asked. It floated up and down in affirmation.
"Master, allow
me," Anneliese offered. I asked her to do it. Anneliese scattered the
seeds with graceful movements. She looked beautiful doing anything.
"Alright. Lesser
Vine Spirit, make the beans grow!" I commanded. It floated up and down,
indicating its consent.
It flew around the
area where the seeds were sown, and glowing dust, like pollen, fell to the
ground. It coated the seeds as if to wrap around them.
Hm? This is... I felt
something draining from me, so I checked my status and saw my MP decreasing. It
seemed that growing plants consumed my MP.
Sprouts emerged from
the seeds on the ground, growing bigger and bigger.
"Whoa!" I
exclaimed.
"It's
amazing!" Anneliese chimed in.
They grew rapidly,
putting out lush green leaves, and then withering away.
"Those are
Gogops-nanodesu!" Rosalina exclaimed. Gogops were apparently a type of
bean. They resembled soybeans but were slightly smaller.
I had grown about 20
seeds, but the MP consumption wasn't much. At this rate, I could grow 10 times
that amount without a problem. It seemed I could easily cover the mansion's food
supply.
"I will harvest
them," Anneliese said, rolling up her sleeves and taking out some farming
tools.
"How do you do
it?" I asked. Not to brag, but I'm a city kid. I've only seen rice
planting on TV.
"Please leave it
to me, Master. When I was little, I helped my parents with farm work,"
Anneliese explained. It seemed Anneliese's parents, being former villagers,
were farmers. She efficiently harvested the Gogops.
However, I wondered if
Gogops could be harvested from uncultivated ground on such a cold day. This was
a food cheat, I realized.
"Can Gogops be
harvested in winter like this?" I asked.
"They should be
harvested from late 9th month to the 10th month. There aren't many vegetables
or grains that can be harvested in winter," Anneliese replied. It was the
same as my common sense. So, things that normally couldn't be done were
possible with the power of a spirit. And even a Lesser Spirit could do this
much.
My MP as an Enchanter
(main job) with Assassin (sub-job) is 460 points, but it only consumed 20
points to grow these 20 Gogop seeds to harvest. One seed can yield dozens or
hundreds of Gogops, meaning the MP consumption is only 1 point per seed.
Spirits are insane.
Gandarvan and
Anneliese had a point about lecturing me. As they said, it's not something to
show in public.
"Anyway, 'Lesser
Vine Spirit' is hard to say. Can I give it a name?" I asked.
It seemed okay.
"Then, I'll name
it Rose," I decided. Since thorns are also part of roses, "Rose"
should be fine.
It moved with large, happy
motions. It seemed to like the name. Good, good.
