Chapter 12
The Great Lemon
Translator : PolterGlast
"It's just too
amazing! You know exactly where all the monsters are!"
"It's only
because the monsters in this forest don't bother to hide their presence. You're
surprised by too many things, Ginia."
"But it just
looks like the path is clearing itself for us! It'd be weirder not to be
surprised by this!"
We had already reached
the center of the forest, and I think we'd killed a total of fifty monsters.
I'd killed every
single one by sending a slash flying, and from Ginia's perspective, it must
look like the enemies are just dying on their own, which has sent her
excitement level to a weird place.
Well, she was already
acting a little strange before we even entered the forest.
"More
importantly, have you found any Great Lemons yet?"
"I've been
looking properly, but I can't find any. Do you think it might not be the right
season?"
"I have no idea
about that sort of thing. But I don't think they'd issue a quest if it was
impossible to gather them because of the season. Besides, the receptionist
wouldn't have recommended it."
"Ah, you're
right! Maybe we should just keep looking a bit more patiently."
We spent another hour
after that walking around, searching for Great Lemons.
Just as we came out
into a small clearing, Ginia pointed and shouted.
"Graham-san, I
found them! Those orange fruits are Great Lemons!"
"Just when I was
thinking we'd never find them, we found a whole bunch at once."
There were several
Great Lemon trees lined up, and just from what I could see, there were probably
about a hundred fruits growing.
It was a relief that
they weren't scattered all over the place, but I do wish they had been growing
a little closer to the entrance.
There weren't any
particularly strong monsters in this forest and I never felt any danger, but it
was simply tiring to walk through the unchanging scenery.
"I wonder if all
the ones closer to the entrance were already picked? Anyway, with this, the
quest is complete! I'm so happy I'm finally about to complete my first
quest!"
"This is my first
completed quest, too. Since we're here, should we gather a few extra?"
"That's a great
idea! Let's pick some for us to eat, and some to give to the receptionist. I
haven't done anything this whole time, so I'll climb the trees and get
them."
"No, it's fine.
I'll just aim for the branches and cut them, so you just catch them down below,
Ginia."
"What! You can
pinpoint a target that small?"
"It'd be
dangerous if I hit a person, so I practiced a lot."
"To be so
considerate about a skill you'd be used in combat, that's just like you,
Graham-san!"
I gave Ginia
instructions, guiding her directly underneath, and then neatly sliced the stems
of the Great Lemons.
The fruit swayed every
time the wind blew, making this more difficult than attacking the enemies on
our way here. This task was surprisingly fun.
Treating it like a
kind of game, I sent slashes flying and collected the Great Lemons, managing to
pick twenty in total.
We could probably sell
them even without the quest, and I thought about picking more... but this
should be enough for now.
"And with that,
the quest is complete. All that's left is to bring them back to the
Adventurer's Guild safely."
"Right! I was in
a complete mess with every quest I took before, so clearing one this easily
feels like a dream!"
"I guess being in
a party really makes a big difference. Having you here was a big help for me,
too, Ginia."
"Really? I don't
think I was of any use at all..."
"No, just finding
the Great Lemons was a huge help."
"Hmm. I guess so,
but I feel more guilty than anything for leaving it all to you."
"In that case, do
you want to do the fighting on the way back?"
The moment I made that
suggestion, Ginia's expression instantly stiffened.
I can support her at
any time against monsters of this level, so I can let Ginia gain some
experience.
"A-are you
serious? I lost to a common goblin, you know!"
"It's fine, I'll
be with you. I'll give you instructions at first. Ginia, want to give it a
try?"
"Ugh... If you
put it that way, Graham-san, I can't refuse! I'm sure I'll be a bother, but
please let me fight!"
It seems my persuasion
steeled her resolve.
Though she doesn't
need to be so resolved; Ginia should be able to defeat the monsters in this
forest with ease.
I think her only
problem is nervousness, but all I have to do is be prepared to cover for her if
she makes a mistake.
