Chapter 13
Advice
Translator : PolterGlast
While heading back the
way we came, I was looking for a suitable opponent for Ginia's first battle
when... I sensed a goblin's presence from our front right.
Judging by its
presence, it was another common goblin. This forest might be unusual in that
only common goblins exist here.
"Ginia, I've
detected a goblin. Are you okay? Can you fight?"
"Yes! Let me
fight it!"
Ginia drew her dagger
and took a stance.
Perhaps because of the
reassurance of having me behind her, she seemed full of motivation, yet her
body wasn't tense with wasted effort.
"I'm going to
give you instructions, so listen closely."
"Understood! I'll
follow your instructions, Graham-san!"
The goblin that
appeared was a dirty, earth-green goblin.
The moment it saw
Ginia standing before it, a vile grin appeared on its face, and without a
moment's thought, it raised the wooden club in its hand and charged.
"Ginia, watch its
movements carefully. It's raising the club with both hands and coming straight
at you. That means it only has one attack pattern: swinging the club straight
down from the front."
"...You're right.
If I can read its attack this well, I can dodge it!"
I was going to have
her start by just dodging, but Ginia easily dodged the goblin's downward swing
and, as she passed it, stabbed it once through the heart.
The goblin, its heart
pierced, collapsed with a scream and, after a short while, stopped moving
completely.
"I did it! I beat
the goblin so easily!"
"...Did you
really lose to this goblin before? I was surprised by how easily you took it
down."
"It's all thanks
to you, Graham-san! When I looked closely, I realized it was full of
openings!"
She defeated it so
effortlessly that I almost thought she had been pretending she couldn't beat
goblins just to flatter me.
The single strike
aimed at the heart was good, and she read its movements perfectly.
It seems Ginia really
does have very good eyes.
"I only gave you
a single piece of advice, though."
"That one piece
of advice was huge! Before, I never had the luxury of watching my opponent! I
was too busy just trying to manage myself, but the moment I saw my opponent and
realized it was full of openings, the tension in my body disappeared!"
"Well, in any
case, we now know you can handle goblins. From here on, I'm leaving all the
fighting to you."
"Yes. Please be
sure to give me advice! ...Also, please help me if I'm in danger!"
"You don't have
to worry about that. I'll be sure to support you properly."
Perhaps gaining
confidence from her instant kill of the goblin, Ginia started walking ahead in
high spirits.
My role was just to
scout and tell Ginia where the enemies were.
I used to do something
like coaching back in the village, but I never taught someone this
step-by-step, so it's actually kind of fun.
Watching Ginia grow
with every monster she defeated, I began to learn the joy of teaching as we
made our way toward the exit of the southeastern forest.
We made it out of the
southeastern forest and returned to the town of Biodasdal without incident.
It was good that we
were able to complete the quest with not only me, but also Ginia, completely
unharmed.
"That was...
incredibly fun! Thank you, Graham-san."
"I had fun too.
I've been acting alone since I left the village, so doing something together
with someone else was a fresh experience."
"The joy of
completing a quest is just amazing! And I never thought I'd be able to fight
monsters like that! You weren't secretly weakening the monsters for me, were
you, Graham-san?"
"I gave you
advice, but I didn't lift a finger. You defeated every enemy on the way back
all by yourself."
I was always prepared
to provide support, but in the end, Ginia defeated them all on her own.
She was able to defeat
goblins easily, and she properly handled and defeated other monsters like
Kobolds, Slimes, and Killer Bees.
It seems Ginia really
does have a talent for combat. Although it's true there were only weak
monsters, I think her performance in battle was quite impressive.
"I think I might
have already awakened to the joy of combat! Just this morning, I couldn't stand
the thought of fighting."
"It's because you
can clearly see your own growth. You're able to immediately put my advice into
practice. I think you can become strong if you work at it, Ginia."
"Yes! I'll do my best
to not be a burden to you, Graham-san!"
She had a radiant
smile on her face and was clearly having more fun than she was this morning.
For an old geezer like
me, just seeing a young girl's smile brings a great sense of joy.
